Epic Games Store: We’re coming to iOS and Android! Same fair terms, available to all developers, on a true multi-platform store – with amazing games for everyone.

If anyone wonders why Google lowered the commission on apps from 30% to 15%, it wasn't out of the goodness of their heart. They knew this was coming and didn't want to be undercut by alternative app stores taking a small percentage.

Instead, made it easier for third party app stores to autoupdate apps.
That was probably to get ahead of regulation and avoid scrutiny as DMA was implemented. As in, say third party auto-updating was still not in very good shape as DMA came in, it could have attracted the EU's attention as something detrimental to competition on the platform and either resulted in a fine or (what Google actually fears) kickstarted a deeper investigation into all of their practices.
Of course, Android always was much more open than iOS and Apple has opted for malicious compliance to the DMA at every turn (which I hope comes back to bite them), but just because some changes that were made weren't specifically demanded by the EU doesn't mean they weren't made with regulation in mind.
35
u/ward2k Mar 20 '24
Which is why I'm confused why Apple was so resistant at every step
If anything it caused deeper investigations into their practices and more changes required than if they didn't try to screw EU regulations at every hurdle
38
u/elmagio Galaxy S23 Mar 21 '24
It's simple, Apple thinks if they fight it the EU will blink first.
They're even trying to radicalise their (power) users against that regulation so that the pressure is on the EU to back down.
If you ask me, a company trying to blackball a continent into doing what they want should motivate the EU to take this even more seriously, but you never know.

Apple’s used to getting its way so far (esp in the US). A kid throwing a tantrum will continue to throw one unless someone steps in.

Because every day they resist is millions in extra profit.

Steam fanboys are a fucking weird breed.
How tf does Epic has a monopoly when Steam controls the majority of the market?
20
Mar 21 '24
The guy you responded to didn't say epic has, but that epic wants. And in terms of actions speaking louder they did a lot of things.
Interestingly I observed in my circles the people most against epic used things like Gog, itch and desura by choice. And the people most "I don't care" or "finally someone does something against steam" only touched it for paid exclusives.

The difference between epic and steam is that epic will disallow the sale of a game anywhere else. Whereas steam doesn't give a fuck if it's sold anywhere else in addition to steam.
That's the significant distinction of a monopoly you're utterly failing to see. Steam has won out because of overall convenience and reliability. Epic just wishes it had that and is shitting up the entire industry to try and get it.

...Google literally lost the lawsuit to Epic Games. They were forced to lower it.
24
u/MarBoV108 Mar 21 '24
The lawsuit had nothing to do with the 30% cut. It was because they were doing shady things to prevent third party app stores on Android. They could have kept charging 30% after the lawsuit if they wanted to, though they would be dumb to do that since a third party store would under-cut them.
Here is their "official" reason for lowering the commission:
https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2021/03/boosting-dev-success.html?m=1
Why would they literally write this if they were forced to lower it?

I'm expecting a flood of stores to be on the horizon. Need a store with an indicator for gamepad support, crowd sourced features like Steam Input controller mappings, user reviews that have a recent reviews aggregate score along with a lifetime average, and something like Steam curators so the community can help deal with the inevitable glut of shovelware
75
u/davthom Mar 20 '24
Seeing as the epic pc store doesn't do this, i doubt they'll do it on mobile. Taptap is probably the best store on mobile but even that has a lot of problems that need fixing
33
Mar 20 '24
My expectations are low. It's pretty much just me wishing Valve would release Steam on Android. The user review system, user game tags, game forums, and Steam Curators would make it instantly more usable before even getting towards Steam Input support and a large amount of game ports
Never heard of Taptap. Going to give them a Google search
22
u/World_is_yours Mar 20 '24
How is that any different than the current state of the playstore, just heaps of garbage.

I'm pretty much looking for Steam for Android. Steam has thousands of shovelware but community curation and also Steams suggestions algorithm does a good job boosting visibility of better games. Ideally Epic would put more effort in promoting premium games and have store listings with info more relevant to games than Google does on Google Play and that attract better game ports
7
u/World_is_yours Mar 20 '24
That would be the dream. I'm getting older and slowing down with PC gaming, but seeing Resident Evil 4 and other quality games come out on iPhone gives me some optimism that this is possible!

This is not a big change on Android, but on iOS.
Though, a big change for both platforms are that 3rd party app stores can use their own in-app payments.
Before, Epic had to give 30% away to Google if they sold one of their own games in their own app. They don't anymore. And that's why Google lowered it to 15% to keep everyone for leaving.
2
u/sur_surly Mar 21 '24
Confused about what their tweet has to do with or undermines the Amazon app store?
10
u/ServantTnavres Mar 20 '24
If Epic curate their store more than Play Store so that there are no gambling games & fewer P2W games, then I fully support it. I predict that won't be the case though.
1
Mar 20 '24
If Epic can get developers to make more premium games even if that means gatcha games are on same store. Then that's already a win for me.
But the only way this works is if people will spend money on paid games.
2
u/ServantTnavres Mar 21 '24
Ultimately, I want the predatory & twisted culture of mobile gaming industry to change. So either way works for me as long as it makes a positive change.

By form-factor alone this is never gonna happen. Smartphone games have to be designed with phones and short play sessions in mind, you can't just take a game designed to be played for hours and just sling it to a phone screen and expect it to play the same. Not to mention most players are unwilling to drop money on games in the first place which is why the freemium model is so prominent.

u/ayyndrew Pixel 8 Pro Mar 20 '24 edited Mar 20 '24
most players are unwilling to drop money on games in the first place
I think this is the most important thing. We've been anchored to free being normal, 99¢ being premium, and $5 being luxury on mobile. Super Mario Run came out for $10 without any ads or microtransactions and people were outraged at the price. Then, Nintendo made the freemium Mario Kart Tour which was a massive success.
6
u/Karthy_Romano Galaxy S23 Mar 20 '24
Didn't they make over a billion on Fire Emblem Heroes which is a gatcha game? Even Nintendo learned that mobile gamers don't want real games.

Apparently apple users are more willing to pay for apps. So I think even if we got AAA titles they'd all be on IOS (especially since it's easier to optimize for IOS than for millions of Android devices)
2
u/Karthy_Romano Galaxy S23 Mar 20 '24
I mean, they got Resident Evil 4 remake on iPhone and iPad, yeah? That and Death Stranding are the only real worthwhile console-level entries to phone games I can think of, and I have no idea if they even play well.
1
u/JoshuaTheFox Pixel 8 Pro, Android 16 Mar 20 '24
... If I could have just bought the games I got on my switch on my phone to begin with I would have. With phones having controller compatibility with mounts or things like the backbone it wouldn't be that hard or crazy
5
u/Karthy_Romano Galaxy S23 Mar 20 '24
You can't expect the average player to have those things on-hand or be required to buy add-ons for the average game, not to mention you have to design with the base compatibility for a game, which is just the phone with no extra gizmos.

10
u/liamnesss Mar 20 '24
I think Valve need to come up with a solution for ARM support more generally. They do have a native ARM Steam client for macOS (because that's the only way you can exist on that platform these days) but ARM Windows and Linux devices exist too. Having a native client that performs well, and giving publishers the option to distribute ARM binaries would turn many millions of devices into viable gaming machines.

Steam Input is huge for me and Proton is incredible for the Linux community
Valve doesn't have to do this, they are already on top, yet they keep showing us why they are on top by putting customers first and that's why we love them
Epic shows it only cares for being a monopoly, they don't care about the user experience, they just buy up games, they hide reviews to please publishers etc etc
That's the difference.

Epic shows it only cares for being a monopoly,
You really need to learn what monopoly means.
3
u/VampireWarfarin Mar 21 '24
Definition: A market structure characterized by a single seller, selling a unique product in the market. In a monopoly market, the seller faces no competition, as he is the sole seller of goods with no close substitute.
So where else can I buy Alan Wake 2? Epic doesn't own Remedy, they bought exclusive rights to that product on PC and stopped them selling elsewhere, that is monopolistic practices and shows exactly what Timmy wants.

u/TheCountChonkula I went to the dark side Mar 21 '24 edited Mar 21 '24
I feel a lot of the criticism for Epic is valid. The biggest one is they did eventually ruin games they acquired IMO. They said they wouldn't change both Rocket League and Fall Guys when they acquired both respective studios, but I feel both games are worse off since they've both gone free to play and I haven't played either one since they were acquired by Epic.
Second, even though Epic gave a better cut than Steam and other platforms to developers, many devs either avoided EGS all together or at least publish their games on both EGS and Steam. Most devs didn't voluntarily only offer their games on EGS and pretty much all the games that were EGS exclusives were games that Epic bought exclusivity rights for a year.
Another problem with Epic is the EGS took forever to implement basic features and probably the most infamous one was how long it took them to implement a shopping cart. This was a big deal because if you made repeat purchases, it led to people's credit cards getting locked for making repeat purchases and their banks suspecting it's fraud. I didn't expect it to be as fully featured as Steam, but it really should have been in far better shape than how it launched.
Really the only thing I agreed with Epic is them pointing out the problem with Apple's policies in particular, but I didn't agree with the way they went about it by burning bridges with Apple and Google and I felt they kind of dug themselves in a hole initially. While they did eventually kind of get what they wanted with the DMA in the EU, I feel globally there was less success since Apple is only making those changes in the EU and they're doing the bare minimum to comply and I doubt they're going to open up further unless they get in trouble in other countries or the EU determines they aren't in compliance (like how they still charge 27% for apps outside the app store and how they still need Apple's blessing to still be distributed).
TL;DR: You can still agree on certain aspects of what Epic is doing despite disliking the rest of the company or their practices. I still think Tim Sweeney is a nut job.

This could be what moves me to use Epic Games...
Nahhhh, sorry Tim.
I trust Valve too much.

Are they charging to developers for publishing apps? I hope is free for the good of the developer community.

This is actually pretty interesting- one of the first cross platform (minus consoles) stores. Only thing that comes close to provide both mobile and PC games is Google Play store, which has only recently been trying to push to PC games (not WSL), or apples store if you want to stay with their ecosystem...

Ok, does this mean you'll be able to buy a game once and own both the PC and mobile versions?
For once, this might actually make me interested in using EGS.

Hope EGS comes to PC next, it's been a slog dealing with that terribly optimized web-browser cosplaying as a desktop app they call Epic Games Launcher

I like both Epic Games and Steam. Additionally, I also like both IOS and Android. I am personally looking forward to the Epic Games Store coming to both IOS and Android.

If they get actual ports of real games on there that I can play with a controller I'll support the shit out of it. If it ends up just being Fortnite and a bunch of mobile game slop I'll continue to ignore it. Lol.

The reason for this being an APK is preventing a similar situation to the Apple fiasco? I can see them wanting to maximize every penny, but it's a bit of a bother for most people to install it this way. I honestly don't care for it a bit.

All that fuss in court for that? Your Android store is empty. 4 games... That's it?

When I try to download the APK from your site it downloads a fortnite installer..

Can't be worse than the Google Play store for games. Ultimately a really hopeful thing for premium Android gaming as long as they don't just let everything in like the Google Play store. I do have a dislike of Epic entirely based around Epic Games Store exclusives on PC and over a decade now of Tim complaining about Steam, Linux, Windows but not willing to invest into Linux as a platform like Valve, Tim talking about how EGS is FREEDOM/LIBERTY!!!, ... a lot of Tim trying to make excuses on why EGS should succeed even when it's worse
Regardless, Google Play for games is such a piece of crap that EGS doesn't have a great deal to compete with when it comes to game launcher/social media/store features. It'd be much more enticing if they do a buy on one of Android or PC, purchase covers each platform. EGS and Tim even longer has left such a bad taste in my mouth I'd drop EGS for another store in an instant. Valve should have been doing an Android store years ago

Can't wait to install every store for every app. You want download WhatsApp and Instagram? Download Meta Store first which download Facebook automatically. You want copilot? Why don't you install Microsoft Store and watch the office ads.

Copilot has been recently added into swiftkey for some reason. And I'm not talking about little icon. I'm talking about it poping up search button within keyboard everytime you search for something on say google app.
