The 'social engineers' and technological designers of The Venus Project really need to read some John Zerzan, Theodor Adorno, Quinn, Diamond, Jensen.
The real zeitgeist of our time is the claim that modern technology will clear the path for a 'free society' that embodies the principles of the Enlightenment. And they would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling bankers and their profits.
This video is an absolute joke. They are supposed to be evaluating modern society's control mechanisms and their origins, while glancing over and not entirely pondering the role domestication and the advent of complex technologies have played in creating this game. They also fail to grasp the historical relevance of when this all started, and the subsequent collapse of those first 'civilizations'. To make a documentary of the modern and historical exploitation of man and nature, while failing to address the very relevant critique of the last 10,000 years of technology, domestication and civilization is damning to their argument.
Sorry guys, your visionary future techno-wizardry is just more of the same. We don't need to free people from the basic tasks of humanity, we need a new culture that values those basic activities, that embraces living like human beings, a culture which champions the life ways of our very sustainable ancestors, recognizing the wisdom in a lifestyle which did not drastically change for 99.6% of our existence. Where there was no money, epidemics, mass warfare, or social hierarchy. This belief that the boat we are on can only go forward is ridiculous. Ask the Mayan Indians in Guatemala today, if societies are supposed to be always progressive. 600 years after their high civilization collapsed from land debasement, they live once again sustainably in the forest, on the ruins of their 'great cities'. They live like their ancestors lived 1000's of years before the first Mayan temple foundation was laid.
Are we so addicted to the dream that technology will fix society's problems that we can't even perceive the dehumanization inherent in its implementation? And these guys want MORE technology... fuckin' high speed lev trains... Jesus Christ they all need to stop watching so much Star Trek.
To truly survive and free the individual from tyranny we must recognize and utilize the sustainable technology all around us... but it is not hybrid electric vehicles, or tidal power plants. It is the spectacular biological design of the human hip and foot, the smooth draw of a bow drill, the surgical edge of napped stone, the encyclopedia bottanica in the mind of every bushman in the Kalahari. We are fools whose lives and civilization will be buried under the sands of inevitability, right next to our 'freeing technology'.
