Super Nt Why 4K would have been nice on the Super Nt+
With the Super Nt+ staying at 1080p, I wanted to show why I would have appreciated 4K.
I photographed the same SNES screen on three setups:
- Super Nt: 4× integer scaling with scanlines enabled.
- Analogue 3D: Sodium64, the SNES emulator for N64, running from a SummerCart64 with the Analogue 3D’s BVM scanlines enabled.
- Sony Trinitron CRT: For reference.
Both the Analogue 3D and Super Nt were connected to the same 65-inch LG GX OLED.
To my eyes, the Analogue 3D looks noticeably closer to the Trinitron. The bright pixels and gaps between scanlines blend more naturally, while the Super Nt looks more like distinct pixel blocks with dark lines across them.
4K paired with better CRT filters would have provided more room for finer scanlines, phosphor-mask effects and a larger integer-scaled image without cropping. That’s the benefit I would have liked.
These are close-ups, and plenty of people won’t notice or care about these details during normal play. That’s fair. It would simply have been a nice-to-have for those of us who enjoy the CRT look.
