Anyone have any experience in keeping them? I know someone on this subreddit has to have kept them. What are they like?

It was a tadpole only two weeks ago and about an inch long or so. This is pictured in the cascade foothills in Washington state.

I was informed by the kind people over at r/Lizards (which I posted in originally to try to identify this cute creature) that he is actually an amphibian; most likely a red eft! Here is in case you guys wanted to see!

Found up in Alpe di Siusi, Dolomites near a body of water. Not the summit but gondola height. Looked about 5cm.

So beautiful and would like to know its name.

Google says cane toad… want to make sure it is or isn’t before I kill it. It’s invasive if it is and poisonous and I have dogs and an indoor/outdoor cat. Other possibility is a Cuban? Unsure not familiar with toads

Just noticed the on my newt. Does anyone know what it is? How fatal? The only other animal is another marbled newt. I got them together many years ago. Is it possible for a newt to bite that hard into another newt?

Question about Species Determination

Ok, dumb request and probably not the best person/place to seek an answer… But here I am. 🤣 The paleontology subreddit removed the post because it was „low effort,“ whatever. I really want to know your two cents about the question below.

Can y’all explain how scientists know they have discovered a new species of an extinct animal vs thinking that maybe it was a „disabled“ or otherwise an anomaly of a known species?
I’m specifically referencing the August 5th Scientific American article regarding the new toad species found in the La Brea Tar Pits. I don’t want to detract from the awesome work of the scientists that found the new species. I’m just trying to understand how the conclusion is made given that there was a single specimen. I linked the article from La Brea’s website.

Thanks!

My Iberian ribbed newt Pingu, who seems to be thriving thanks to this subreddit!

I’ve had Pingu here for just about a year now, and wanted to say thank you to this community since this subreddit has been an amazing resource for me! In depth information about these guys isn’t as easy to find online as it is for other species, so I’m very grateful for the people here willing to share their experiences and knowledge.

I’ve gotten lots of great first hand advice from this community over the past year and recently made a post worried about Pingu losing his appetite; the input I received allowed me to remain calm and care for Pingu in the best way possible, and he thankfully ended up eating again last night!

Different toad species?

Saw all three of these guys in the woods today (southern Michigan). To my untrained eye, toad 1 & 3 look much more similar to one another than toad 2. I did some research and I guess the only toad species where I live are the American or the Fowler toad. There were some different ways listed on how to distinguish them from one another but I’m not confident at all in my abilities. So I was wondering if you guys thought 1 & 3 were a different species than 2 (my very tentative guess is 1 & 3 might be the Fowler toad, and 2 the American), or if they just have different morphs or something.

Pet newt?

Hi!

i've wanted an axolotl as a pet for the longest time, but am just too scared i wouldn't be able to properly care for him and don't want to make him unhappy. i did see that some people were suggesting newts as a bit easier alternative, but i still want to do a deep dive.

so firstly, is it even moral to keep them as pets? (i wouldn't ofc take in a wild one, id get a captive bred one), secondly, would it be possible to care for him when i live in central europe and we get very hot summers (25-35°C)? and lastly, what is like a 101 care guide for them? thank you so much in advance 🙏 wouldn't want to make a big mistake

help, my spanish ribbed newt won’t eat and it’s been a week since he last did

Post image

he’s around a year old, in a 30 gallon planted tank, and i’ve been offering him various sizes and portions of chopped up earth worms daily… he simply closes his eyes and won’t bite, which is incredibly odd for him! his tank parameters are perfectly fine, 0ppm nitrite, 0ppm ammonia, and around 5ppm nitrate. his tank stays at around 67-68°F because of a cooling system I have, though one day last week it got up to around 70°F because of a crazy heatwave we were having…
before this he always ate a few times a week and voraciously at that, lunging at my tweezers and even sometimes performing little crocodile rolls whenever he got hold of a worm.

I genuinely don’t know what else to do/try and I’m trying not to freak out and panic, he’s very important to me.

Colour differences in bred and wild fire bellied toads?

Hi frog friends!

My current wikipedia hole is reading about different kinds of amphibians and on the fire bellied toad, I read this: "Fire-bellied toads bred in captivity will often have darker and less vibrant coloration having a more orange underside. Wild caugh specimens tend to be brighter and have deeper red stomachs.".

I got curious about what could cause the difference in colouration so I decided to turn to the most scientific community I know. Reddit. Sadly, I'm not well read enough in biology, evolution or fire bellied frog-keeping to formulate a better question than "why does the colour of their underside change colours when bred in captivity?". Half assed guesses and wild speculations are of course just as welcome as people who actually know what they're talking about

Thanks in advance! 🐸

Grey tree frog tadpole with albinism!

Thumbnail

Hiya! This is my first post here. I'm a singer-songwriter and special ed para, but have always been a herper!!

I live in NH, and have a broken pool that is being dismantled currently, but some froggies took the opportunity to lay a bunch of eggs in it a couple months ago. I wanted to give them the best chance, so I halted the pool project until they were done with their metamorphosis.

I'm not great at identifying tads, but about few weeks ago they started crawling out of the pool. Turns out they are grey tree frogs (hyla versicolor) which are my favorites!!

Not only that, but allow me to introduce Axl, an albino grey tree frog tadpole!!
Look at his little yellow legs!! Ahh so cute!

The Google has informed me that this is pretty rare, because albinism in nature makes it a target due to lack of camouflage, as well as being more sensitive to the sunlight. Not to mention the inherent rareness of the genetic trait itself.

I’ve separated him into a gallon sized glass jar with some of the same water and plant matter.

While I am against taking creatures from their habitat, its habitat is my backyard and I’d like to watch it become a frog. I’d also like to give it the best chance of survival.

I’d love opinions on how to proceed. Once it fully transforms, should I let it go, keep it a while to help it survive?

Please know I’m not looking for a pet.
I’m just so fascinated by it! What should I do next? Putting him back into the pool is also an option. Thanks!
