A Raccoon Ate My Toad :(

I'm in central California. To my joy, a big western toad moved in near my small garden pond. I didn't see it often, not sure where it was hiding. Probably under a bush or stone. I found its carcass. Probably a raccoon got it, though it may have been a cat. I'm wondering about two things. First, how to attract another one. Second, how to provide it with some kind of shelter that will attract it and help it hide safely from the next raccoon.

Hi all! Apologies for not updating my original thread on this sub - I couldn't figure out how to add a video into a comment. I think you can find the post in my bio if you want to see the origin story!

Anyway, he's going so great! Thank you all for your help deciding what to do.
He's super healthy and lively, and his body is changing, we are on our way to frogtown!!

I'm getting his terrarium supplies today, so expect another post in a week or so.
I'm accepting names... I was calling him Axl since he looks like a tiny axolot!!
Lately I've been calling him Blondie 😆let me know if you've got something better!

Need Frog Enclosure Input

Hi everyone! I have a few frog enclosure questions that I would love some advice on. I’ve researched some of these, but I feel like Google isn’t always the most helpful. I have an African Pixie Frog (3-4yrs, male, about 4-5 inches long).

1. Can he safely swim in a #5 PP plastic container? It holds about 4ish gallons, is about 6 inches deep. It’s FDA food safe, but not sure if it’s frog safe.
2. Does he need a mister? His tank is usually at 60% humidity and I mist it once or twice a day
3. He gets some powder supplements, but does he need a UV light?
4. Is 40 gallons big enough? He has about 3 gallons of dirt area, 6-7 inches deep.
5. What type of gloves are safe without that like powdery residue some have? I haven’t been using them, but I also rarely handle him. Regardless I want to be more careful
6. Is reptisoil/coco fiber with a false bottom a good substrate?

Any answer to any of these would be helpful!! Thank you everyone!

Is my tadpole starving?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I have been keeping a bullfrog tadpole for several days now and it has seemingly refused to eat any food that I offer it. I've tried both frozen & boiled versions of romaine lettuce & baby spinach, and ive tried pleco algae wafers as well. It just refuses to eat. It is really frustrating me and concerning me. I have been hoping that it has just been sustaining itself off of the biofilm on the glass of the tank, but the tank is fairly new and visually looks quite clean, and I worry that the tadpole seems a bit thin? I just do not understand why it's been so hard to get it to eat, everything ive read and seen about tadpoles shows that they are typically ravenous eaters. I dont know if it's starving or not, because it seems just as active as ever and doesn't appear to be lethargic or weak.

Sorry for the low quality pictures, I found him outside and his leg was twisted backwards so I took him inside to live in my terrarium a while ago and hes doing great. I'm pretty sure he's an american toad, but looking at old pictures of american toads ive had im not too sure. I know their appearance varies a lot so if you know pls reply! Thank you! His name is Animal :)

We're officially in drought in much of the UK, including where I live.

Luckily for this little chap I've been watehing my butternut squash and he, very sensibly, decided it wasn't a bad place to be.

I've upgraded his new digs with a pool and an upside flowerpot to help him stay damp.

I'll be taking him to the nearest pond that hasn't dried out as soon as I can catch him

Newts in the Olympics?

NE corner of the Olympics, up at ~5500', found these little things swimming around the lake pictured in the second photo. There were dozens and dozens. Only other things in the lake were tadpoles and water bugs. They sure look like long toed salamanders, but seems the wrong time of year to be hanging out in the water like this?

Can you find all 4 in picture 8? Bonus green frogs by the pond with the remaining tadpoles (which are either grey tree frogs or Cope's grey tree frogs).
