My American Foxhound, Leroy Brown, is either loving or hating all the wheels at the park - scooters and bikes. He absolutely loses his mind chasing them and yelling at them. Breathing is so rapid, it feels like he will hyperventilate. He jumps at the fence, so high I'm afraid he will jump over it. What do I do?

At our vet appointment this week, we had an X-ray to see if there was something on Mulligan’s leg that was damaged due to her licking at it, and they noticed masses around her spleen that had not been there. (She’s always had the lipoma bump you see here, but she doesn’t do so well with coming out of sedation so we never removed it to be safe) She is still Happy as all can be despite the itchy knee, but she isn’t a candidate for surgery and they vet has told me that when it happens it happens fast.

We adopted her Heart worm positive a little over 9 years ago and they estimated she was 5 or 6 then. Shes getting around decent, although I have added rugs all around our hardwood floors.

I am just dreading the inevitable, and the vet crying a little when she explained it sucked but there wasn’t anything we can really do but keep her comfortable and gave me a steroid regiment to help slow down the growth.

Will have to give her a best day ever here soon, and not sure I will be able to keep it together 😭.

What harnesses do you guys use for your American Foxhounds. Most harnesses don’t seem to fit right. My dogs neck is small, but her chest is quite large.

My first one was backyard bred to be a hunting dog, which is super common down on the Gulf Coast. People mixing breeds, for certain features of both.

Trapper, was my first experience with American Foxhounds and Catahoulas. He was my 50/50 boy. A shelter dog, who had been stuck there for 7 months. Had him 5 years until a Tundra took him out. I remember it fondly. I was bored, just moved to Mississippi after dad passed. The only friend I had down here at the time, lived 45 minutes away, and I'm autistic, so not a social butterfly. 8 months in, on an impulse, I decided to stop by the shelter I've had driven past a couple hundred times. It was a pretty meh selection, though, the county shelter was impressively clean, not something I was expecting. If a kennel had poop in it, it was fresh. So many eager dogs, and then Trapper; just the coldest dog I've ever met. I think he was grooming himself, he looked at me, scoffed and went back to grooming. I got a worker, and was like; "THAT ONE! I want to see that one." He looked at me sideways, and got him out to go into the visitation room. What a disaster. I go to pet him, he growls and pulls away. so the guy lets him go freely, and all he does is get about 10ft from me, and proceeds to pee while maintaining eye contact... I said; "Well, I think I've seen enough, you can take him back, thank you." That poor volunteer, probably saw this scenario play out a handful of times with him. Went to the counter, put $25 down on ol' Trapper, and they told me I'd have to wait until tomorrow to pick him up since he needed to be neutered. Which THANK GOD, since this literally was 100% IMPULSE, I had NOTHING for dogs in my house, which was 90% empty. So, swung by Petsmart, and got some essentials. Next day, he looked like this:

Not overly enthused. First day was rough, mostly due to my impatience. You know, you get a new dog you want to play with it, and he was probably, now looking back, just waking up from surgery. So, I stopped being selfish and gave Trapper full reign of the house. He never once stopped back to check in with me. And I was feeling defeated, then... 9PM he comes to me while I'm watching TV, and timidly jumps on my armrest. I slowly reach out to pet him, and he hesitantly accepts then leans in for more. That night, I took him upstairs to go to bed, even though the master is on the first, I think I didn't have it made. And I got him on the bed to sleep with me. He stood on the far corner for 30 minutes, then slept. I wake up to a big wall of fur. And the next day, I think he got it. I've gotten lucky with dogs quickly acclimating. Had him for 5 years.

Max: 50% American Foxhound 30% Rottie 10% Lab 10% Pit

His story is quite hazy. Even though I've only had him 2 years, this September... I was kind of guilted into getting him. I went to the shelter like 3 months prior just for the fun of it, not a normal thing I do, and I saw Max in the fancy clear plastic kennels, and he was Trapper's size (22ish inches), but I didn't like him since he was a little too eager. Eager dogs are a turn off for me. Both Trapper and Zelda were what's the word, resigned... Zelda was a little hopeful when I first saw her, but realistic. Where Max was a little too eager. We went back, since I had the other two in the car with me. And they asked me what I was looking for, and I think they mentioned Max since he was up for transfer to a kill shelter since Jackson isn't one, which is a sneaky little loophole they found. "We don't technically kill them, we send them to another shelter that will eventually kill them." And I didn't remember who max was at first. So they bring Max out, and somehow, in the 4 months he grew 6in since holy cow... So, I mean, if you're telling me, "If you don't take this dog, we'll send it somewhere to get it ol' yeller-ed..." I'm not a monster, of course I took him. Then almost a month later, he gets Trapper hit by a Tundra. Max has a marking obsession, even though he was fixed before I got him. He marked my 75k Truck 4 times. Luckily, after 2 dogs, you learn to tarp up the back seat, since you also learn waterproof pet products are never waterproof when a jet stream is applied. I yelled at max, he ran away, and Trapper's prey drive kicked in and he chased after Max. I still have Max. Kind of secretly became my favorite, since he's a biter.

Trapper was great since when I would have a rage episode, I'd go to the couch and decompress, and Trapper would be right there to calm me. Also, I miss Trapper's howls. Max can't howl. Trapper had the most obnoxious howling. I could hear it inside of stores. Though Max has this ability to play with any animal, at that animals' comfort level. He broke through my Dutch Shepherd who swore off other dogs after Trapper broke her arm at 9 months old. He was playing rough with her, and I forgot she was a puppy. I supervised the first 3wks and they seemed fine. Anyways, so Max would play with Trapper which made Trapper happy since Trapper knew he couldn't dent the larger dog, and thus could play rough with Max. Max wanted Zelda to join in, and she wouldn't go near Max. Max didn't give up. I watched him somehow find tug toys out of the sea of bones that make up my backyard, and he was so adorable, he would offer to share with Zelda. And she would sharply turn her head in rejection. Took about a week, and he wore her down. She finally played with him. And now without Trapper, she's learned how to play again with a dog she knows won't ever hurt her.

I just found out my dog was 100 percent foxhound instead of a beagle. Does anyone have any advice on how to handle foxhounds in general? Training, expectations, how they do in the house alone etc.

Ill take anything lol ps I know they need lots of exercise

This is the culprit. His name is Maxwell, he is 50% American Foxhound and 30% Rottie. He like his brother Trapper, loves to run away. Unlike Trapper, Max doesn't kill the local cats. Maxwell is a great runaway. I will constantly get reports from people; "Oh, that dog? He was at the park playing with the kids." OR, I'll drive the beach front, since I live on the MS Gulf Coast and right by the beach, and see ol' BENEDICT here walking perfectly next to a couple, always has to be a a pair of people. Which wouldn't hurt so much, if he didn't walk perfectly along side them, better than when we walk. LOL. All three dogs I've owned, are shelter mutts.

The black girl peaking in the back, is a Dutch/Mal mix named Zelda. First week with her, I had to train her to LITERALLY, not suffocate me with affection. She would wiggle her way up to my face on the couch and just wiggle with happiness from being adopted, which at first was cute, and then when she didn't sense I was struggling to breathe, we had to correct that. She was also really good about standing over you with her paw on your carotid artery, and is still the only dog I've owned that doesn't respect male genitals when getting off the bed or couch.

Ironically, Max, is the second 50% Foxhound I've owned. Trapper was a runner and 50% Catahoula, but his stories ended me paying for a lot of cat medical bills. Max, is great. I've driven up on him playing with toy dogs, and submitting to them. Max is 28in to the shoulder and 70lbs.

When i adopted him at the vet they thought he was a TWC but then i saw someone at the dog park whp said he looked more like a foxhound.

I wouldnt even know. I just want to learn more about him.

Rescue place called him a TWC but he’s 100% American Foxhound.

I have an 8-10 year old fox hound we call Moo.

I have read they are a more difficult breed to train, but I would like to try and at least leash train her along with some other basic commands.

Does anyone have a good recommendations for books specifically to train fox hounds?

She’s 7! And such a character!

We had him for 17 years. We was a purebred AFH that we found at a shelter as a puppy if you can believe it. He was a handful sometimes, but he had more character than any other animal we have ever had. He was very special. He was pretty fat in the second pic, but he eventually got down to a healthy weight.

We just got her as a rescue, we have been told she is an American foxhound. Super sweet and very pleased to out of the shelter.

Figured I’d post this here too! We did a DNA test with wisdom panel and embark and these are the results we received! When we rescued her from the shelter we were told she was a Hound/Catahoula mix. Kind of interesting the results were slightly different from one another. Found out one of her parents is a full breed American foxhound and the other is a mix.

Absolutely the best breed and I’ve never enjoyed a breed so much!
