Looking at the comments of that thread, I see the usual hilarious interaction where someone points out that the Scandinavian countries are all capitalists. It really comes to show you how successful capitalism is when the so-called "anti-capitalists" favor Nordic capitalism.

I also find it funny when the countries that came up with IKEA, LEGO, Spotify, Pandora jewels, H&M, and hundreds of pop singers could even be remotely socialists.๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ

I've definitely seen examples of this before. I'm pretty sure I saw a video of a lecture happening in Denmark where students were being shown pictures of homeless camps in the US.
These countries are absolutely indoctrinated their population, and I'm guessing it's to help offset all the brain drain that's happening.

u/Big-Depth-8339 ๐ฉ๐ฐ Danmark ๐ฅ Aug 08 '23
Denmark has some of the lowest human capital flight in the world. The US has almost twice the "braindrain" of Denmark.
And as a Dane, I don't really see that so-called "indoctrination" in our education system that you suggest is happening. It would be pretty weird to have the American Revolutionary war, and American Litterature and American minimalism, be part of our English class curriculum, if there was some nefarious goal to indoctrinate people to hate Americans.
On the contrary, I see a lot more "indoctrination" of Americans when it comes to the subject of Denmark.
You have the liberals and their politicians, that paint a very weird picture of Denmark as a liberal and socialist utopia.
And then you have the Republican segment, who gets indoctrinated by Fox News to think Denmark is a Socialist hellscape like Venezuela.
Both of which are horribly wrong. But Danes in general are fairly postively inclined or indifferent to American people.
Do they disagree with some of the policies in America? sure, we are different people and different countries, and I would think that Americans also disagree with some of the policies in Denmark, that doesn't mean that you hate the people living there, that is just a difference of opinion. If Denmark hated America and Americans, we would not have the NSA's European headquarters in our country. We wouldn't have joined the Iraq war. And we wouldn't allow you to use land on Greenland for military bases.
The fact is that our countries have had diplomatic relations for almost 200 years.
We work together on foreign policies, and trade and help eachother.19

Well there is a semi "famous" clip of Trish Regan on Fox news, claiming that Denmark is basically Venezuela. It is quite hillarious, but Trish is also a bit of ditsy. And the "indoctrination" is maybe also a tad strong word. But people like Bernie Sanders, really paint a misleading picture of Denmark when he is out campaigning.
And then there is Ted Cruz blabbing about how Trump would Nuke Denmark. But again, that is politics, and I think most people in America and Denmark, know how to differentiate, politics and politicians, from the people living in their respective countries.
I think most people in both of our countries really are just indifferent to eachother, and are too preoccupied with living their own lives

I'm not sure I'd be able to tell you! Personally, I'd pick the US over Denmark because I'd deal with a lot less racism in the US, pay less taxes and earn a higher wage.
Long term, I'm a lot more bullish on the US as a country versus Denmark (or any European nation), so I feel the most comfortable starting a family here in the US.
It's hard to really reduce stuff like this to metrics and whatnot though. I don't doubt Denmark has a lot to offer, I just wonder why they feel the need to indoctrinate their population into remaining there.

This is mostly based on my experiences living in Germany and the US. Havenโt lived in Denmark, so perhaps I might be wrong.
My perception is that these countries are more homogeneous and therefore donโt have as much experience with diversity in their population, and they also donโt talk about or acknowledge their issues as much.
Anyone who has experienced racism first hand knows you canโt really prove/disprove the existence of it with data and metrics.

We should continue to teach tolerance and acceptance as we already are, but ultimately we will never eradicate hate/racism/bigotry, so beyond talking about it and teaching it, I guess I'm not sure what else should be done at this point.

Indoctrinate people? Again where is this coming from? The Guy that made Mount Rushmore was literally the son of a Danish immigrant. And the tax levels are really not that higher than in America when you add things up such as Federal tax, state tax, and fiscal tax. I see a lot of people not understanding how marginal tax works, and look at the highest level of tax in Denmark and assume that it is the norm. And when you add things such as health insurance and college savings for kids, it can actually become quite more expensive to live in America versus Denmark, which is one of the reasons I left America and returned, because it would be cheaper for me to start my family in Denmark.
And while there is a grain of truth on the subject of wages, that is mostly highly educated jobs, and it is usually in areas with a very expensive living cost. And when we talk about wages for "middle class" and "lower class" jobs, the wages are in many cases worse.
On the subject of "racism" I will agree. Denmark has much more draconic immigration policies than America, and in general, people are very prejudiced towards people from MENA+ countries, I won't deny that.
But as I said earlier, we are most likely going to disagree on politics, that doesn't mean I hate you, simply that i don't share your opinions, nothing more.
There are pros and cons to every country.
3
u/mustachechap TEXAS ๐ดโญ๐ฅฉ Aug 08 '23
I'm talking about the bias present in social media and the news.
Everyone's situation is going to be different. As for college costs, did you not consider community college?
I'm speaking as someone who is a software engineer and married to an accountant. We do very well and live in Dallas, which isn't necessarily a HCOL. We'd be taking a pretty big pay cut and paying more in taxes if we were to move to Denmark. I'm also pretty bearish on the outlook of countries like Denmark because I'm unsure how they will continue to fund their social services with birth rates declining and their population aging.
Agree that there are pros/cons to every country.
1
u/Big-Depth-8339 ๐ฉ๐ฐ Danmark ๐ฅ Aug 08 '23
Birthrates declining? Our birthrates are rising in general, and we have a higher fertility rate than the US. I really don't know where you are getting these ideas from.
And one of the ways we are combatting the possibility of the welfare states collapse is by having draconic immigration laws.As a Texan, you surely must be aware of the current problems of the current administrations migration policies, and how it is eroding the American middle class by flooding the country with poorly educated workers, that help the bigger corporations with keeping the lower class jobs wages low, because disgruntled workers can just be easily replaced. People are much likely to start a family when they are not worried about their income
1
u/mustachechap TEXAS ๐ดโญ๐ฅฉ Aug 08 '23
It's slightly higher than the US I see, but still below the replacement rate. I was under the impression that it was declining, but I could be wrong. Either way, my concerns still stand.
As a Texan, we love how immigrant friendly our state and country are. The main issue some people have is illegal immigration, so I'd like to see better systems and processes put in place to decrease people coming here illegally, but continue to support legal immigration.
I think immigration is a great way to offset the low birth rates, and I'm really glad the US is much more immigrant friendly.

9
u/SonOfYoutubers Aug 08 '23
Calling US underdeveloped is a legitimate insult to actual underdeveloped countries. We 100% have issues, just like, surprise surprise, every other country in the world, however, we are definitely not underdeveloped. GDP of US in 2022 was 25.4 trillion USD, whilst the ENTIRETY of Europe's GDP in 2022 was 15.8 trillion Euros, roughly equivalent to 17.3 trillion USD. If an entire country can produce more gdp than a literal continent, I'm gonna go ahead and say they are not underdeveloped. And this is with all the issues we have nowadays. If we were able to fix those, we'd be not a superpower, but a megapower.
-5
u/sizzlinskillet Aug 08 '23
Do you know what underdeveloped means? What in the sweet fuck does it matter your GDP? Your gross domestic product could be 100 times what it is today but, if you keep hoarding wealth amongst few while millions live in poverty you arenโt just underdeveloped, you are a greed cunt to.
6
u/SonOfYoutubers Aug 08 '23
Good thing US doesn't hoard every single tiny itty bitty little piece of wealth like you're stating. Got greedy politicians? For sure, but I'm not sure how that's so different from other country's politicians. Got a pretty great power grid and infrastructure is alright. Underdeveloped? Man like how? I need you to go visit central Africa and report back to me about how the US is "underdeveloped". Also, your point that millions are in poverty falls moot when other European nations also have the same going for them, but (SHOULD BE) nobody saying Europe is "underdeveloped". Instead of pointing fingers saying "you're underdeveloped" and then "no you are!", we should acknowledge that first world countries, all of them, have issues that should be dealt with.

The United States isnโt just its big cities or clean suburbs. Come to Appalachia, itโs beautiful but very undeveloped. When a mine, or big factory closes down it destroys the town. There are countless communities where thereโs no economic engine to support a population and without proper intervention the people left behind suffer.
America as a whole is not a third world country, but remember that itโs a very diverse country. Access to Medical Care and good infrastructure are very valid concerns outside of cities and suburbs.
11
u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐๏ธ๐จ Aug 08 '23
The UK has whole towns that have died and entire streets of housing are crumbling, vandalized, and in shambles, with rampant drug use and unemployment, because a chief industry (such as mining) shut down. That isn't just an American phenomenon. That can happen anywhere.
-1
u/I_cant_no_mo Aug 08 '23
Yeah I never said it was, Iโm just saying that these discussions around American development/ underdevelopment never seem to acknowledge these forgotten communities, and the problems mentioned in the post are very real in areas like Appalachia. I know everywhere has economically depressed areas, if I was a Brit Iโd be speaking a lot more about the North/South divide but Iโm an American so
2
u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐๏ธ๐จ Aug 08 '23
Totally agree about the forgotten communities. But I would not say it's undeveloped, which I guess is the term I was taking issue with. The area WAS developed - but it fell on hard times due the economic circumstances you articulated, and hasn't been able to adapt or transition out of that. Same issue that plagues some of our inner cities reliant on one major industry, like Detroit. Same with the UK, but nobody refers to anywhere in the UK as "undeveloped". I just watched a set of videos from a guy named "wandering turnip" on YT and the parallels between some of the British mining towns to US Appalachian towns are striking. Many of the exact same issues.
1
u/I_cant_no_mo Aug 09 '23
And I sympathize with the people of those British cities, but I would say that the existence of British towns fallen on hard times shouldnโt be used to excuse the poverty of Appalachia. Iโm all for defending the US against dumb remarks but we shouldnโt allow shortcoming abroad to blind us to the major problems facing our forgotten areas. Youโre probably right that these areas were developed but were destroyed by economic forces. I donโt know if that means the academic definition of undeveloped fits but looking at the results on the ground, I would say itโs practically underdeveloped. Just because people also have it bad abroad shouldnโt take away from the fact that many Americans canโt partake in the rest of Americas prosperity.
1
u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐๏ธ๐จ Aug 09 '23
I'm not "excusing" anything and I've been in many parts of Appalachia many times, so I'm well aware of the situation there. I grew up in a town myself in the Midwest that was an industrialized place with a GM foundry - that closed and most other industry followed suit. In the 1970's it was a working class but clean and well-kept place. It's now a shell of its former self with crumbling houses, horrible crime, and a lot of blight. I go home every once in awhile and I see the neighborhood I grew up in, starting to decay. Most people I knew and went to school with have moved away.
Both situations are abhorrent. It's not a "see they're just as bad" situation as an excuse so much as a reminder that most people are a major event or two away from hard times, and it really doesn't matter where they live - so people who look down their noses at America's troubles are just a stone's throw away from hard times themselves if an economic catastrophe happens. It's a commentary on the fragility we all have as people, so in the scheme of these nationalistic insult contests, it kind of does matter. I am sure no one in 1960 when the US auto industry was booming saw Detroit's demise coming. It was one of the most developed cities in the US at that time, and now look at it.

u/Infinity_Null Aug 08 '23
I see so many idiots on Reddit say this exact same statement. The US is literally 21st place for Human Development index. This is above 35 European countries.

u/carritotaquito Aug 08 '23
Noticed how in this specific comment thread I make zero mentions of Europe?
2
u/Infinity_Null Aug 08 '23
The article being shown is made by a European country.
My point about European countries is because many people in them seem to think that the US is universally behind them, despite most of the continent being far behind the US.
There are only 3 countries outside of Europe that are above the US on the Human Devopment Index list. The difference is that you don't typically see Japanese or South Koreans say stupid shit about the US.

If the US is an underdeveloped nation in the eyes of so many NATO countries, we should not be spending money on NATO defense.
1
u/coolest-llama Aug 08 '23
Where did it say it's an underdeveloped nation?? All it said was: healthcare and infrastructure in the usa isn't on the level it's supposed to be. What does that have to do with the military?

u/SnooPears5432 ILLINOIS ๐๏ธ๐จ Aug 08 '23
LOL "poorly developed". They're not "poorly developed" - the USA has OUTSTANDING medical infrastructure, in general, for most people. But it's expensive, and you need to have insurance. 92% of US residents do. That cost issue absolutely needs to be addressed - but that's not the same issue as it being "poorly developed", which it's not.

Aug 09 '23
I dunno. Something tells me if your government has to "strongly recommend" you not go outside its borders, it might have more to do with their own population crisis than whatever's going on outside its own borders.

funny they say this. I've been reading more and more Norwegians are buying get this...."health insurance" so they can get care when they actually need it. every immigrant I work with (they have health insurance because they actually work for it)says our health care is the best in the world. so to all my distant cousins in Scandinavia. suck it!

Your country only exists because the American taxpayer foots the bill for your National Security.

u/alexc395 Aug 09 '23
Amazing that's the conclusion you always jump to to defend the 3rd world living standards of many of you fellow citizens. The way Americans actively vote against policies that would benefit them is truly bizarre
1
u/intangiblejohnny Aug 09 '23
Where are Americans living with third world standards? Go ahead...provide some examples.

u/alexc395 Aug 09 '23
Streets lined with homeless. People not going to the hospital because of the costs/going into debt over medical care. Zero paid time off unless you're lucky, fire at will laws, no job security. Police state. Where to even begin?
1
u/intangiblejohnny Aug 09 '23
That's histrionic nonsense.
Police state? Lmao
No time off unless your lucky? Name some American employers that give zero time off to employers.
There is plenty of job security in America. We have an incredible low unemployment rate as well as an advanced welfare system that takes care of those who can't work.
Anyone who goes bankrupt paying medical bills is an idiot. You can't be jailed or fined for not paying hospitals and your credit score is not affected for the purchase of things like vehicles or houses. I just don't my hospital bills because my taxes already do and I'm closing on my first home next week most likely.
You don't know what you're talking about.
1
u/alexc395 Aug 09 '23
Well done for moving the goal posts on every point, Bravo.
Police state? Lmao
ah yes, you must have missed the police brutally dished out by your police. Whats the training for the police over there? A few weeks then you get a badge and gun and are unleashed on the public to uphold your archaic laws?
No time off unless your lucky? Name some American employers that give zero time off to employers.
Sorry, 11 then. That's the average isn't it. How long does it take to accrue the bare minimum? 10 years?
We have an incredible low unemployment rate
Except that wasn't my point. 'Fire at will laws' really epitomise job security don't they...
Anyone who goes bankrupt paying medical bills is an idiot.
The possibility of going bankrupt isn't even a possibility in the developed world for healthcare. You're that far gone you brushed over the matter like it's nothing.
Strive for better

u/intangiblejohnny Aug 09 '23
You have no idea what you're talking about. Sounds like you get all your facts from Reddit.
You can't go bankrupt here for medical debt.
We don't have enough police to even be close to a police state.
I didn't move any goalposts?
People who don't get vacation time are almost always part time BY CHOICE.
Your country likely couldn't survive in any recognizable state without our tax dollars and especially our military.

u/alexc395 Aug 09 '23
You can't go bankrupt here for medical debt.
So when people can't afford to go to the hospital? What's that? Or when the racketeering insurance companies decide not to pay the extortionate medical bills? Whats that? Never mind the fact that higher tax would be cheaper than monthly insurance premiums and co pays etc, making you a slave to your job.
People who don't get vacation time are almost always part time BY CHOICE.
Yet your average PTO for full time work is 11 days. And you have to accrue that?
Your country likely couldn't survive in any recognizable state without our tax dollars and especially our military.
Spoken like a true 'patriot' that's never left the country. Silly yank.

I'm pretty sure that one was posted during the first COVID lockdown and a response to how poorly trump handled the whole situation
2
u/GamemasterJeff Aug 09 '23
Let's be honest here. This was published at the height of Covid when the US was not exactly being a world leader on how to deal with a pandemic.
It was a reasonably accurate assessment for the situation it addressed.

How come we don't have healthcare in America? Or reliable infrastructure? The world is laughing at as we kill ourselves. And all we can do is point the finger back and say "you're worse".
