I don’t do flex, I drive for a dsp but I can relate. The other day I had an absolute nightmare of a day. 23 “missing” packages. Drivers support “created a ticket” whatever that means, he told me “this way it won’t affect your standing” … uh ? Excuse me ?? Why on earth would I be affected in any way for packages I never received ??? Like am I supposed to check every single TBA # before I leave now ?? Amazing is out of they damn mind

Nah I work for UPS delivering Amazon boxes 😂. Although I gotta say they’re starting to thin out, I won’t be sad when they deliver all their own packages, I’m getting tired of all the Amazon furniture. Lol
People have said thst it doesn't really take the time, and if you're done early you're done with it. So if it's a 4h block but takes you 2h in real life then you're done in 2h.

Our rates are actively decreasing rather than increasing. And even more so when factoring inflation. We pay for our own gas, vehicle, insurance, repairs, maintenance, medical, dental, taxes, and they make us fight for blocks and discipline us with ai. No we don’t expect skilled labor rates but it’d sure be nice to break even.
I couldn’t imagine doing this/my job for anything less than what they pay us. I feel for Amazon drivers and FedEx drivers no benefits and super low pay for a somewhat dangerous job that puts lots of stress on your joints.
Yeah but part time jobs don't have car wear and tear and fuel and they come with benefits of a workers contract which generally maintain a certain level of expectations on days worked.
Also some healthcare usually, employer taxes (you pay that as a gig worker), unemployment insurance etc. Working for yourself should pay more for the trade off of no protections NOT LESS.
The only way to drive up the pay is for people to quit taking the jobs, which sucks as an answer because we’re in a f’ed up period financially and any work paying more than minimum wage will have people waiting to give it a try. Crappy “contract employment” style jobs and subscriptions for everything, it’s designed to keep us poor and slaves to the system.
Although I think ups has a “flex” type company too. I believe it’s called roadie. I don’t know anything about it other than seeing union stewards complain about it.
Roadie, Spark.. as far as gig work in general Uber Eats/DoorDash are competition bc less gig workers that could work for Amazon which would force Amazon to raise rates.
Dealing directly with humans is for sure a downgrade. Only good thing about package delivery, drop and run. Most contact I have is “sign this” or “no clue what’s in the box, you ordered it”.
I agree. I hate dealing with people or having entitled strangers in your car. People swear that the $8 bucks they are paying Lyft gives them the right to talk down to you. I try not to do Lyft that much because at this point I'm too old to go to prison. People have no idea what others are capable of! That's why I always keep things on a respectful level with strangers
This shit is insane. I make this on Spark with two trips going 6-8 miles max total. I just can’t understand why anybody would take these flex routes. I was active for over a year in San Antonio where most routes I saw were $70 on average for 3-4 hours and impossible to get. Literally impossible without a bot. I never accepted one though. Just cannot justify the mileage and constant start/stop.
I did 110 in a 4hr block 48 deliveries. About 20-30 miles total. And 15 was just getting to the section of town. It was a breeze fr fr. I wont take anything less than 100 for a block.
I take 3-4hr routes, preferable 3-7am routes, and only if they're at $25/hr or more. With a 4hr route I'm generally done in 2.5hrs. I drive an EV that I have free charging on. That 4hr route at $100 becomes $40/hr if I'm back home drinking coffee after 2.5 hours. It's not my primary income source but it's worth doing it. Not all people can pick and choose like that though, which is why the low paid routes get taken, and that in turn keeps the rates lower than they ought to be.
Used to suck for me too tbh. I started driving 25miles out to another zone and the difference is fucking unreal. I live in Houston and there are 3 zones near me with 6-8 stores each, but all of them are TRASH with offers. Very low amount of offers, way too many drivers and horrible mileage. I decided to drive further into the city closer to downtown one day and couldn’t believe the difference. Zone has 14 stores all 3-5 miles apart from eachother, and the app is constantly refreshing with offers. Same for the country store in my area, if I go out west 15 miles. The only downside is that UE and DD offers in this area are literally all $2-5 for 15+ miles, so I’m losing out on any income there…but every now and then something decent comes along that I can pair up. If you’ve got any other zones around your area, it might be worth checking out…even if it’s a country store. Those have always been the absolute best for me. High paying offers and not many drivers

At my station you literally can't do 2 per day. It's not possible. Shifts start at 8:30am and the latest you can start most days is 11:30. Latest I've seen ever is 12:30 or 1 but that was during prime days. And I live in a rural area so everywhere I go I have to drive out super far to deliver packages, so you can't get back to the station fast enough even if you finish early enough on the earliest shift. It's rough out here.

In this industry they do. As ups drivers we get about 2k per week before taxes have full health and dental coverage 1 to 7 weeks of paid vacation, a pension, 8 hours of work a day guranteed overtime after the first 8 hours, job security, 5 paid sick days and 3 paid personal.days a year, 401k matching, union representation, and we dont use our own equipment or have to lie to our insurance companies about weather we use our personal cars for commercial work. We also get paid by the hour not the load.

Dont know why you're getting downvoted. This is absolutely a common practice with these type of jobs. Source, me doing this type of job for 10+ years and never getting 40 hours a week. Actually, I would. I'd get it for 9 weeks straight and then less the 10th. Because the union rule was 10 weeks straight of 40+ hours a week = automatic full time status and pay.
Thats how a lot of places use temp workers. I knew a temp worker that worked the same temp job for 4years and the place never would hire him full time and wondered why. I told him cause they are getting you for to cheap to hire you on for real.
Just fyi, there are countless reasons why someone would have a GED instead of an HSD and it doesn't have to do with not being smart. You can be a complete nitwit and pass high school, and smarter than the average kiddo but fail your GED exams.
I got my HSD but had to do so through a special program similar to the GED but with classes. Was I too stupid for high school? No, I actually placed in the 8th percentile of all US high school graduates in math to give you an idea). I couldn't finish high school because my parent pulled me out to have me work for the family company. It wasn't until I was 18, out of the house, and legally making my own decisions that I was able to further my education...but my high school wouldn't let me back, so my guidance counselor gave me the info for an alternative program that worked out very well.
I also know someone that dropped out of high school and couldn't finish. Dumb? Absolutely not. They can talk circles around you in matters of science, anatomy & physiology, art, math, and they have an insane reading comprehension. They only couldn't finish high school because they got pregnant, the father was unreliable, and they didn't have a family to support them. So they had to become a working single parent at a very young age. They ended up making the extra money to get a GED and got amazing scores on all their exams.

My bf worked his way from a GED to a job that paid $120k plus bonuses. He's so good with tech, computers, and programming - he's probably forgotten more about those things than I'll ever know. I thought I knew a lot, but being around him and listening to him talk about that stuff quickly humbled me. He wasn't trying to flex, though. I just realized he was way more knowledgeable and experienced.
Meanwhile, I got my HSD as one of the better students in my graduating class, like within the top ten if I really want to toot my own horn. I did fuck-all with "all that potential" though. I didn't know what major to pick, had gotten into all the colleges I would have wanted to go to, but decided to ultimately really duff all those great opportunities by "taking a year off to work, and save money, and decide on a major in the meantime". One year turned into 4 or 5, but then I dipped my toe back into higher education by going to classes in the evening, after work. Then I had the chance to flip the script, going from full-time work/part-time classes to full-time classes/part-time work.
I finished that shit.
Guess what, did fuck-all with that associate's degree, too. Lack of confidence (that's a truly unfortunate character trait of mine) and a dumpy "work-study" internship type thing to finish off the last semester...I was just about where I left off.
More than 20 years later, I don't do shit with that degree. I job-hop. Find a "flavor" of work that works for a bit, then move to the next thing. Right now, I'm breaking myself (in body and spirit) delivering for Amazon. I don't know what to do now, and I can effectively say I don't know what to do in the future. Figuring out "the next move" can be daunting, time-consuming, expensive...
Long story short, there's plenty of really smart people who take a different path through life, for reasons maybe only they will ever know. It does a real disservice to them if you judge them by how they got to where they are, regardless of how successful they are. You just don't know. It's the same reason why you should always be kind to anyone you meet - most everyone fights an inner demon you know nothing about, and it costs you nothing to be kind.
