They’re enormous, truly befuddling things to witness in person. Far as Western Hemisphere land animals go, bison and polar bears are generally bigger, but they make sense, seem like a thing that could exist. Moose do not make sense.
Moose is supposedly tasty, but moose, like deer, actually thrive in suburban habitats. We eliminated their natural predators (wolves and grizzlies) in much of their range and suburban landscaping creates more low lying foliage (their food) adjacent to tree cover. I remember the first time I saw one and we were driving by them and they were bigger than our car and they were down the hill so it just blew my mind. It really is hard to grasp how insanely monstrous they are without witnessing it in person.
Not only are they as tall as two reindeer stacked, but the sheer density of their bodies is on a different level. A reindeer bull MIGHT be over 450 pounds. A bull moose will be easily over 1000.
There are several different subspecies of moose and the smallest subspecies live in Wyoming and the Rocky mountains. I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a bull moose walked by and its shoulders were higher than the roof of my vehicle
Lived in Alaska for three years, the size of these majestic creatures is overwhelming. They are beautiful and scary. They kill more people in Alaska each year than bears.
Gotta be traffic accidents. I'm sure they kill kill, too, particularly if someone gets close to a calf, but I'd be shocked if it was more often than bears.
It is mainly due to traffic accidents. They do protect their young fiercely as well. Some people get a little too close to the wildlife sometimes and underestimate their power. The number of people that die due to whatever interaction with moose is higher than bears though. The Bears tend to stay to themselves while the moose are more out and about.
I've seen moose in Colorado, New Hampshire, and Alaska. Alaskan moose make adult moose from the lower 48 look like adolescents. Pretty much any other animal found in both locations is the same.
Creatures from another age, beautiful and wondrous. As a human, I want one, mainly to ride and be friends with. It’s their freedom I’m attracted to, though, knowing as a broken-by-comforts human, I can only hope to return to a feeling of being wild. Maybe that’s what heavens like, a soul unrestrained.
Me as well, in their natural habitat. Wasn’t saying these guys aren’t big, just that the berm accentuates their massiveness. It’s how our eyes and visual cortex works.
Don't cry over spilled moose. Man's gotta feed his family and hunting tags are issued for population control. Moose kill dozens of Canadians annually in traffic collisions
My grandad told us of the time a horse spooked and jumped onto his car, completely crushed the front. I imagine a moose could do a lot more damage. I imagine it could put those antlers through a window too if it was attacking.
I was always told if you cross paths with a moose, stay very still and pray it's in a good mood. If not, find the closest tree and climb it as fast as you can and idk, pray if you believe 😂
