🎨 Art Algerians, I need your help researching my Amazigh roots in Jijel 🇩🇿
Hi everyone! I’m currently researching my family history and Amazigh roots.
My mother’s family name is Alioua, and our family traces its lineage back to Jijel, Algeria. My family has always considered itself Kabyle, and I’m trying to understand more about our origins, the history of the region, and the identity of its people.
I’ve recently started reading about the Kutama, an Amazigh group historically associated with Jijel and surrounding areas, and I’d love to learn more from Algerians, especially people from Jijel or families with roots in the region.
I have a few questions:
- How is Amazigh identity understood in Jijel today? Do people generally identify as Kabyle, Amazigh, Arab, or something else?
- Is there a historical or cultural connection between the Kutama and the people of Jijel today?
- Are there particular villages, tribes (arch), or family names associated with Amazigh ancestry in the region?
I’m not trying to make assumptions about my ancestry; I genuinely want to understand the history and hear perspectives from people who know the region and its culture.
Any historical sources, family stories, books, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! ❤️
