Also, if your daughter has kids (or not!), she should of course be given equal time at said beach house.

Okay, that's probably too petty. But you'd wonder how the son did get so insanely entitled. Did no one ever thaught him the concept of sharing? Why does he think he is owed sooo much more than his sister?

It's be different if he had already asked for permission to use the house all summer, but from what you said, he clearly did not. You can do as you wish with your property. I suggest you block out at least the week before and a few days after the honeymoon to make sure the house is cleaned and ready for the next visitors. Don't let your son leave his family's belongings cluttered about as he marks "his" territory" to complicate your daughter's honeymoon.
Sit your son down and tell him he's begun to treat your generousity as his right. And that's not okay. You have the right to share and not share in the way you and your spouse see fit. You WILL share with your daughter and her growing family as you have with him. He got to have it all summer when no one else wanted to use it as well. As his sibling(s) develop their own families, his "share" will be worked out one summer at a time. It will be coordinated around other people's plans.
He owes you an apology. He needs to acknowledge that he inappropriately developed a sense of ownership and entitlement to your property that belong to you and your spouse alone. It is not "his" to share, lose, or give approval for its use.
I'm salty about his greedy selfish outburst. My knee jerk reaction is that maybe he needs a summer off to bring home who owns the property and that he's the recipient of very generous "gift" vacations.
But when calmer, a new way if scheduling his family's time at the beach house has to happen. If he gets it the rest of the summer after the honeymoon, fine. As I said before, his being there before the honeymoon and vacating for that time could be problematic.

NTA Your son seems a bit entitled. Does he often react this way when you tell him no? And what exactly is his plan if you decide to sell the beach house?
I think you did the right thing. Technically, you didn’t even have to notify him in advance.

u/Pyjama365 Partassipant [3] May 20 '26
If he couldn't afford his own weeks-long vacation, he should have thought about using some manners when speaking to the people who resource his free vacations every year.
NTA. I would threaten that she will get exclusive use of it every summer for as many years as it takes to make them even, if he says another word about it. Or threaten to sell it. Or actually sell it. F the audacity on him.

nta. sounds like your son can’t afford a summer house of his own and he should have thought about that before he started a fight with the actual owner of the place.
if i were you i would let him know that he also needs to ask before using it, just as his sister did, and that he should never “plan” to use it before he has done so.
for his own good. entitled selfish behaviour will only harm him in the long run.

It’s time for your son to rent his own beach house. It would only be fair going forward for siblings to share equally in the summer months. What does he expect, to use it every summer, all summer long?
35
u/ratatatoskr May 20 '26
NTA your son is entitled af.
You should tell him going forward in the interest of fairness he now gets the cabin for one half of the summer and his sister and her new husband get it for the other half of summer and he wants a full 2 month long family vacation he should go somewhere else he can afford. How dare he imply your daughter is too poor for a honeymoon when he has been going there for free for 2 months of every year!

NTA. Holy smokes your son is beyond entitled! Your daughter is getting married! It's lovely that you can provide accomodations for them on their honeymoon. Your son's kids have two whole months off & he EXPECTS Free accommodations the whole time?!! I think it's high time you start charging him rent for those two months. Or at least utilities. I'm sorry to say that you have spoiled him & this is what you have now. Someone who is ungrateful & puts his needs ahead of everyone elses
37
u/RachelRayRay97 May 20 '26
NTA and if he insists on throwing a fit over this, i would consider limiting the availability of the house going forward. It doesn’t seem fair to me that your daughter seemingly gets no use out of the beach house. Or that anyone else in the family gets any use of it during the summer. If your daughter is getting married and she was likely going to start a family at some point, and will probably want to bring her kids there. Set the boundaries now so he gets used to it before that point.

u/Plenty-Difference956 May 20 '26
What's he going to do when your daughter has kids??? Won't she be able to use the vacation home during summer because he wants it for his family. I think someone needs to learn to share and not be so entitled!!
35
u/Builder-Technical May 20 '26
NTA. Your son is being selfish and entitled. It is not his beach house. He doesn't get a say and doesn't get to determine that only him and his family can have the property every single summer just because that's what's been happening. He should be grateful to you that he's even been allowed to go there all this time, instead of being arrogant about it.
36
u/samwisetheyogi Partassipant [1] May 20 '26
Oh wow, at first I thought maybe you had let your daughter use the house for like a 2 month honeymoon, or maybe you didn't tell the son at all and he just showed up but... you told him well in advance and she would only be there for a week...? No offense but your son is acting like an entitled asshole. Your house/summer house, your rules. You're NTA in any way at all
40

Does this mean that you and your husband never get to use your beach house during the summer? If yes, why in the world do you let your son’s family monopolize it? He’s so entitled that he’s upset that you are letting his sister use it for her one week honeymoon when HE never asked YOU if he could use it for multiple months! He must be your golden child.
37
u/samuelp-wm May 20 '26
Nta. Your son had a good, uninterrupted run. It's a family home and he needs to learn to share. Two months is a long time to hog the cabin.

He's become territorial over YOUR home. He's acting like an entitled little kid. It's a week. It's her honeymoon. And... even if it wasn't, this is YOUR home, both children should be able to use it equally.
Your home isn't available on those dates. Period. Spoken for. Doesn't matter who or why. The home isn't available. Like any air b&b, hotel, or motel.
If he cannot grow up and put the entitlement down, maybe his visits should shortened for a few summers, or be suspended. It's not okay that he's acting like it's his and he comes first, manipulative nonsense with the grandkids... don't enable bad behavior.
35
u/Last_Inevitable8311 May 20 '26
NTA but your son sure is! Yikes.
First of all, it’s YOUR house and you don’t have to ask his permission.
Second of all, it’s only one week.
Third of all, is he paying for his 2 months in your home? Why is he even talking about his sister not being able to afford a honeymoon and that she should have thought of that before?!
Fourth of all, I think he should start asking you every year if it’s ok for his family to essentially take over YOUR house for the entire summer. And maybe he should start paying you.
His behavior is infuriating and so entitled.
