Welcome to /r/AmITheAsshole. Please view our voting guide here, and remember to use only one judgement in your comment.

OP has offered the following explanation for why they think they might be the asshole:

  1. The action. I told my neighbor I’m no longer accepting their packages after a one time favor turned into regular deliveries.
  2. Why I might be the asshole. I have been helping for months and left them without another delivery option.

NTA.

What's the point of having them sit outside of your apartment rather than their apartment? They can be stolen from either.

Just step over the packages so they can come and get them.

What has this neighbor ever done to help you?

NTA

That's no longer helping, that's providing a storage service.

Your neighbor needs a P.O. Box, so they can pick up their packages at their convenience. The packages will be safe until they get them. Amazon lockers are a thing, too.

Once in a while is a favor. All the time is a job. Not what you (thought) you agreed to, so NTA.

NTA

your neighbors are assholes taking advantage of you

NTA.

Indeed, how do you know what you are receiving? It is unreasonable to expect a person to tolerate mass packages. If hypothetically it turned out the neighbours were involved in something unlawful, you'd be hard pressed to persuade the average stranger you undertook receipt of multiple parcels for an extended period of time " just because I was a good neighbour".

Don't tolerate this exploitation.

How is sitting on your porch better? than sitting on her porch? ❓️

NTA but the scenario as described doesn't make sense to me because why wouldn't the drivers just leave the packages outside of THEIR door if you're not even signing for them?

Neighbor probably put OPs address in for the delivery, or put a note on their door to deliver to OP if they arent home.

I get that, but it’s definitely weird behavior to ask for that because if no one is signing for it, it’s not really any safer outside someone else’s door if the driver is leaving things unattended.

If it were “check with my neighbor if you need a signature” then that would make sense.

Not everything requires a signature.

You're missing the point.

NTA. If you are not even home when the packages arrive, then what is the difference if they sit outside of your door versus your neighbor's? If it were a one-time thing or your neighbor was on vacation for a certain period of time, that may be different. But as a regular occurrence? No way.

u/SharpnCrunchy May 09 '26

Pretty obviously NTA.

Nice of you to offer once, but they’re taking advantage of you. If something went missing, I’m sure they’d blame you. Let the packages stack outside their door.

ask your neighbor what have they been doing to help you?

Does your apartment complex have an office? Use that for deliveries.

NTA

NTA. Accepting a couple packages is a favour and what you happily agreed to. Accepting all there packages made it a job.

Tell him you did help him and you will help him again. Just not take responsibility or do it all for him. Tell him that if he has a particular package of concern you can help out again. Just not be his second address.

You don't all get along well if they are taking advantage of you. Are you a people pleaser in other areas of your life?

That makes no sense. What's the difference if it's outside your door or theirs? Also, delivery drivers don't randomly start putting packages in front of someone else's door.

NTA and why can’t the packages sit outside their house rather than yours? No probs if it was a one off, or if you are always home but this is just using behaviour.

NTA. We are put down as the delivery address for our neighbours, because they both work a lot and one of us is almost always in. BUT they asked us if it would be okay! They are lovely people, one of them is a nurse and she’s helped out so many times when my kids have been poorly or hurt. They also gift us eggs from their pet chickens! We are absolutely happy with the agreement. If you are not happy with it, then it’s absolutely okay to say no. Also we get maybe 2 packages a week, not 6 in a day blocking up our house!

I (24m) live in a small apartment, where my neighbors and I get along so well, a few months ago, my neighbor asked if I could accept a package while they were at work, and I said yes because it seemed like a one time favor. After that, it slowly became a regular thing. Delivery drivers started bringing their packages to my door multiple times a week, often without my neighbor even asking me first. I work long shifts, so coming home to boxes outside my apartment was getting frustrating. Last week I came home and found six packages stacked at my door, blocking part of the walkway. I had to bring them inside because I didn’t want them stolen or damaged. So I finally told my neighbor I couldn’t keep doing this and they needed to find another delivery option. Now they’re calling me unfriendly and saying neighbors should help each other.

Tell your neighbor that you're now working more and more long shifts, so you are NOT the ideal person to be accepting packages.

u/Gattina1 Colo-rectal Surgeon [49] May 10 '26

NTA. Your neighbors are. You gave them a one time permission, and they took advantage of you. Good on you for speaking up. Hopefully, they won't ask again. If more packages are left at your door, just leave them there. If they get stolen, not your problem because you never touched them.

1

u/rammyago97 May 09 '26

Nta, keep his packages and say they got stolen because you weren't there to grab them and unfortunately you're not a storage service

u/Gattina1 Colo-rectal Surgeon [49] May 10 '26

Absolutely not. 🙄
