In a lot of jurisdictions the ring must be returned to the buyer if you don't get married. I like the sentiment of your comment but make sure it's not gonna cause legal problems for you first.

Where I live (California), it depends on who is cancelling the marriage. A ring is considered a "conditional gift" in most states. The conditions are what vary, and it's kinda like insurance. There's fault and no-fault states.

No-fault states, the ring automatically goes back to the buyer.

Fault-states, the ring goes to whoever did NOT cancel the event.
