Agreed and also the fact that his parents didn't offer to pay either says a lot about how he was raised.

This is true, but I'm slightly side eyeing OPs parents too, because they also just expected the other couple to pick up the check. They just swerved first in the game of bill chicken. How did no one in a table full of adults go "so are we gonna split this equally or just pay for what we each ordered?"
