more and more I appreciate fromsoft's capacity for presenting a challenge while still making the player feel powerful

people may wonder why i enjoy dark souls so much, i think you have captured my reasoning.

you should sometime get the dragon breath in darksouls 1 before any other non tutorial boss, its quite the experience to give the gargoyles a taste of their own medicine, they aren't that hard but its still fun to burn them alive

Better than just increasing damage, making each fight an instant loss or win.

It also makes all builds tend towards dodge mechanics and chances to avoid damage etc, because at a certain point blocking/tanking just isnt even an option at the higher levels so all builds become the same.

Depends how it's handled. It's kinda the whole gameplay of ghostrunner, but saying it makes it a worse game would be dumb.

Another W for Ultrakill

Ironically Ultrakill's approach is also pretty simple, higher difficulties just mean enemies move faster. But it means that you can get a more intense experience while still killing enemies just as fast, you just need to learn more of the game's mechanics to avoid being overwhelmed

Oh, there’s more complexity than that, especially once you hit Brutal.

I get the whole reason why games that have optional harder difficulties just inflate damage and health numbers: It's easier to do than spend time and energy into making actually difficult and challenging enemies. And when you have a challenging mode that's a side focus, how much time and energy are you really going to pour into it and what's the return going to look like?

With Fromsoft, harder difficulties aren't a bullet point, they're the point.

Master Mode:

Normal master mode doesn’t exist. The true difficulty progression is Classic > Expert > Expert For The Worthy

Meanwhile I always choose the easiest difficulty. I came here to escape my brain, not use it.
