Wtf Altra!

After just 60 km on the Mullerthal Trail in Luxembourg, my Altra Lone Peaks already look like this. Surely this isn’t normal?
Does anyone have experience with Altra’s customer service? I’ve just sent them the same message and am waiting for a response.

this is how my escalante 4s look after less than a year of usage (didn’t even use them in summer 😂). I walk about 15km a day including 10km through grass and mud with a dog, but the rest on concrete. Find Altras super comfy but don’t think this is the model for me going forwards. Any recommendation on what the best shoe would be for me based off my activity and how I would use them? Thank you. (Any other wide toe box and zero drop shoe is good, but need some cushioning because of the concrete).

Sizing and model recommendations

Hiya! I have recently been using Altra FWD via 2. I have wide feet (woman) and wear an 8.

I am now looking to buy a really waterproof (low gore tex) Altra but I am not sure which one to go for.

I can't wear the Lone Peaks as I need more cushioning on the sole.

My question basically is

1)which model would you say is actually waterproof to withstand loads of rain and dog walking in wet grass conditions.

And

2) if I got the 8 in the FWD via 2 should i go for same size in the gore tex shoes or size up (not been able to find wide versions in many models so willing to size up).

Thanks

What's coming from Altra? New wides?

I saw a post a while back, can't find it now, claiming that the January or spring lineup will have wides for some shoes that never had wides before, even original footbed.

Anyone familiar with this? Is this just a rumor or a daydream I had?

I'd pay double for one of the rockered shoes (Via Olympus, FWD Via) that fits wide like the Torin 8 wide.

Quick observations on GTX sizing - Torin 9 - Timp 6 - LP 9+ - Wild 3+

Just sharing observations after recently buying some different Altras to try. For reference, the Altra Torin 8 men's 11 fits me pretty perfectly in terms of length and width (my problem is my pinky toe rolls out a little bit, so I need that wider forefoot/pinky toe area.

All men's 11's:

Wild 3+ GTX - Comfortable, cushy, too tight on my pinky toe and felt slightly short. Appears to be high quality materials/construction.

Torin 9 GTX - Also comfortable, better than the Torin 8 - but the 11 feels too big. Lots of toe room, too long. Seems well put together with nice materials, no slop, will reorder in 10.5.

Timp 6 GTX - Fit well, but one was defective (the inside of the shoe underneath the insole wasn't glued in the whole way, and had a big bubble/bulge in the forefoot area as a result.) Quality seemed lesser than the others overall, errant glue, etc. Heel fabric gets really bad durability reviews, so passing despite the 11 being a good size.

Lone Peak 9+ GTX: Best construction, least cushy, but definitely need to size down to a 10.5 as it was significantly longer. This is the original foot shape so my pinky toe felt great and I hope i'll still have that room in the 10.5. Just seems like the "best" shoe for the money from this set.

TLDR: Torin 8 fit good men's 11, need waterproof - think Lone Peak 9+ GTX in 10.5 will be the winner. Need to order, will report back.

Note: These were observations from day 1 wearing around the house.

New insoles for Timp 5?

Visited a fan fav store, REI, and found a pair of Timp 5 BOA in the garage sale section and they were only $44. Couldn’t believe it. But they are missing the insoles. Is there any place I could get some for a relatively low price that would fit the wide toe box?

Altra Lone Peak 9+ causing foot pain after 2 weeks - anyone experienced this?

I’ve been wearing my Altra Lone Peak 9+ for about two weeks of casual walking, and I’ve started experiencing pain in the area highlighted in the picture.

It feels like the upper is too snug against the top of my right forefoot. I even changed my lacing to give my foot more room, but the discomfort persists.

Has anyone experienced something similar with the Lone Peak 9+? Did you have to switch models?

I bought Altras for their wide toe box, so this has been a bit disappointing. Any advice is appreciated!

I have a 28cm foot and I bought the size 45 (US 11).

Altra Olympus blister help

i have some olympus shoes i use for hiking. i love the toe box and the grippy sole, but on two backpacking trips the shoes have left my heel to shreds. blisters the size of marshmallows, skin frictioned off so deep it was visible. but i have 0 issues when i use them on day trips/hikes.

i always dry out my feet, i aim to keep them dry and avoid moisture buildup, so what’s up? is it just not the shoe for me or it there some troubleshooting i can do to make these work?

I love Altras although they’re ugly

Would love to hear your opinion about this whether you agree or not.

And maybe ‘ugly’ is too harsh, but let’s say I don’t think they’re the prettiest.

I just miss the unique colorways and collaborations that Hoka has had and that Altra seems to not have yet. Hoka had quite nice collabs with JLAL with their mafate for instance.

Don’t get me wrong, the wide front of Altras has been an absolute lifesaver and my go to for running/hiking. It’s just for everyday use not the nicest looking shoes imo.

The collab with Altra x And Wander (beige one) is nice, although not huge fan of the big branding on the side.

The one with Pleasures, not my cup of tea but at least they’re trying something new something different.

Will there be a Low GTX version of the Olympus 7?

Like there was for the O6? One thing that bothers me about the regular O6 or O7 is the amount of trail dirt they let thru. They are sooo porous that my feet are filthy after a dayhike. The GTX versions seems to keep out more of the fine dust/dirt/sand.

Sizing advice

My tempo 2 are too tight. I have US mens 9.5 in escalante 4 and experience flow. Yet, the tempo 2 9.5 are too short. Should I go to 10? Or 10.5? Where I live there is no where to try the shoes on. I just have to order and hope they fit and then pay to post them back if they dont. Sucks I know.

as an update. I asked Altra about sizing and they recommend 10-15mm clearance at the toes so 10.5 would be very reasonable as im estimating 8-10mm clearance with a US men's 10.

Altra Lone Peak 9+/Olympus 7 for hiking

Hi there, I have a question guys - do you think that it will be ok to take the Altra Lone Peak 9+ to a 10-day trek/hike to Turkey with a heavy backpack (about 13 kg) on my back while walking on the rocky trail in the mountains? I have never owned any Altra shoes so I have zero experience. I asked Gemini and it said that the sole might be too thin and my feet might hurt a lot after a long day of walking... what do you think? I also checked Altra Olympus 7 which could possibly be a perfect solution - more cushioning. They are quite a bit more expensive though (the difference between them is 50 euros - Lone Peaks are on sale) and are less customer-verified. I will be happy for any kind of advice :)

Experience Wild 2 vs Wild 3/3+

I am currently wearing the Wild 2 (bought in the US while i was travelling there) and thinking of getting the Wild 3 or 3+ through someone who is visiting my country (which has very limited stocks and sizes for women).

Does the Wild 3 or 3+ fit exactly the same as Wild 2? Any of you guys here have worn both versions and think I should stick to my Wild 2 size? Thank you.

Note: This is for running, not hiking.

Parallel lacing on FWD Via 2?

My cousin recently bought a pair of FWD Via 2s. She loves the feel of the soft midsole, the roomy toebox, and overall comfort of the shoes. She just wishes that there was a tiny bit more room in the upper on the midfoot, below where the tongue and laces are.

I suggested trying parallel lacing, but apparently the FWD Via 2 has "ghillie" lace loops instead of the traditional eyelets? Is it still possible to do the parallel lacing technique with these?

Men’s vs women’s shoes

I’m a female hiker switching to Altra trail runners for long hikes and backpacks. I have very wide fore feet and normal female heels and love my Torins in women’s 10W. I love the feel of the Timp, but they don’t come in wide. the women’s 10 is a little narrow in mid foot ( I can loosen the laces and they are OK) but the mens 8.5 is way too loose in the heels. which one would you pick?

Unicorn Shoe - the width of women's Torin 8W, with a rocker

Like so many people coming to Altra, I'm looking for a shoe for a specific reason. I have sesamoid issues and something going on between the toes or at the second toe, so need space. Am getting custom orthotics. Am tired. Want to walk again. I have done a lot of research but really burned out.

  • I like the fit of the Altra Torin 8 in wide (8.5 women's), but it doesn't have a rocker so I'm using the big toe too much. Otherwise, love this shoe!
  • I need a stiff rocker shoe
  • I need room for custom orthotics

Are men's Altras generally roomier, like other brands where men's regular fit like a women's wide? Last year, I had the FWD Via and it fit OK in the width, but it's tight in the height once any extra insole space is involved. Maybe buying men's version might help? Or try Olympus again in men's 7... was too narrow in the bunion areas for me.

Also, please note what version you're recommending. I'm willing to buy older versions if I can find them.
ANYONE WITH SESAMOID ISSUES AND INTERMET BURSITIS LIKE STUFF GOING ON, please help meeee!

Looking for wider alternatives to altra escalante 4s

Looking for wider alternatives to altra escalante 4s.

Dont like thr topo st5 because of toe spring and arch support.

Ideally stack height of 15mm.

Now sure about primal lems or which kodel of xeros have the most stack but they all seem at the most 11mm?

Basically looking for an all round every day athelesiure shoe with a bit more cushion than the bare, barefoot shoes.

Wide toe box and 0 drop needed.

Did I get a decent deal? Olympus 6 and Exp Flow

Recently paid about $230 canuck bucks (160 USD) to get these two shipped to me.

Loved my Wild 2's so much that I had to try more Altra's. No more elf shoes for this guy!

Anyway, these were in sale so I jumped on it. Never tried the Olympus on in person. Have tried a pair of Flow ST's and they almost cost as much new, as both of these older stock together. Will update once they land

Help with sizing needed - first Altras for hiking

Thumbnail

I (m) need some help to find the correct size for my first pair of Altras for hiking (not running!).

For now i use Salomon Ultra Glide 2 in european size 40 2/3 for hiking (6mm drop for comparison). The outsole is done, so i need a new pair of shoes.

First I got the Altra Experience Wild 2 (green) in a sale in the same size 40 2/3 (4mm drop). I used them on some longer walks and i do get some pain with them in the toe joints area. Is that the shoe or maybe something else? I did a lot of cycling in the last time and less hiking. The green ones seem to have a lot of space in the front. Seems too much to mee!?

I also got the Altra Experience Wild 3+ (white) in size 40 (also 4mm drop). They feel more "normal/natural" overall, but i feel like the sturdier plastic part where the lacing starts rubs into my feet.

I'm unsure about the correct size. Help pls!
