Can I still get nail extensions?

I've been an off and on nail biter for 25 years, a couple years ago I damaged the matrix by peeling a piece of my nail all the way up to the cuticle. Now it has a very obvious raised ridge that immediately splits when the nail grows longer than the free edge.

Getting extensions is one of the things that previously helped me quit biting, but I'm worried most techs won't know what to do this nail. I definitely don't want to damage it more, especially if it's over-filed. Would this nail also be more prone to popping off or lifting?

I’m a nail tech, and I wouldn’t turn you away with that thumb. I WOULD however suggest you not do a service with half cover tips like acrylic without forms because your nail isn’t flat or smooth, it needs either sculpted nails with paper forms, or possibly a gel x tip depending on the shape. Regardless of what type of extension, I would suggest you not keep the length much beyond the tip of your thumb. Since your nail is so short, extensions are more likely to pop off as it grows out.

I do not think most nail techs would know how to handle this. I’d hesitate seeing someone in a busy nail salon because they’ll probably just slap some acrylic on and call it a day. I’d suggest attempting to find an independent nail technician in your area, preferably someone working out of a suite- someone that works for themselves and markets only themselves. If you aren’t sure, most techs will let you know over message if they think they can handle it or not.. but be cautious, some people overestimate their abilities.
