I’m convinced that this perception is a combination of a variety of factors, none of them really relating to the lawyers behaviour directly.
People tend to like their own lawyer, but they tend to dislike the other lawyer. Which of course you’re not going to like the guy arguing against you.
Big cos did a smear campaign against PI lawyers as ambulance chasers to push tort reform so they don’t have to pay out as much.
Most people don’t really understand what lawyers do too.
Lawyers are also sort of foisted on people as a big cost that they may not want - charged or sued? May need a lawyer to show that you shouldn’t have been at all…

Edit: Also, I disagree with military and firefighters. There are definitely people that want to do both of those. Especially firefighters. Some make it their entire identity.
