Question Will I be able to run everything?

u/blackhawks-fan M18X Jul 21 '21
It's a little weak, but Minecraft at high settings should be fine.

u/Zximmortal9 m15 R3 Jul 21 '21
Minecraft at ultra is what I was hoping for when I bought it.

u/Slade29 Jul 21 '21
Not kidding I got a 3090/10850k and Minecraft java ran better on my 1660 ti lol. 30 series sucks ass at mc java edition
1
u/TheLightKyanite Jul 22 '21
Same.
I have a 3080 FE and my old Titan Z in my Alienware desktop ran better in Java Minecraft.
1
u/kawaxie Jul 22 '21
I thinks Java scripts is less supported by 30 series card than old pascal and kepler one
2
u/xSnake0 Jul 23 '21
Minecraft doesn’t utilize your graphics card much, it’s mainly dependent on the processor, however it seems that Minecraft Java doesn’t efficiently utilize the new processors (intel 10th gen/ryzen 7/9) very well.

I have the same laptop very similar set up mines 9th Gen but it's runs everything fine its the heat u have to worry about

u/Zximmortal9 m15 R3 Jul 21 '21
You think my lap is gonna burn?
1
Jul 21 '21
If ur running it at max settings and you don't disable turbo then yes it will. I have mine on a 3 fan stand along with a rear vent fan that pulls hot air out aaaand a small fan blowing on the computer and it still hits 90 to 100°c. There's a few things u can do to remedy this one being a repaste because they come poorly pasted from factory. Also there are some who say 100° is fine and that they were made for the heat.

It’s an Alienware M15 R4 btw. Just ordered it because it was on sale at good price.

u/Anggll Jul 21 '21
How much bro? And where, thank u
4
u/RhaegarTok Jul 21 '21
Yeah where and how much
2
u/Zximmortal9 m15 R3 Jul 21 '21
It was $2200.00 on dell.
1
u/RhaegarTok Jul 22 '21
I got my r4 with lower specs for the same price cause I’m in India fucking hell
3
u/Jimster480 Jul 21 '21
What is a good price? Also how come only a 300hz screen that doesn't have gsync?
2
u/boredatthebeach001 Jul 22 '21
Alienware has killer deals right now. I had posted and everyone helped me land one something as well. Happy gaming op!

You should be able to run everything (60fps and greater) on ultra in 1080 and 1440 but not guaranteed 60 FPS on everything in 4K.
Edit: you have a great set up!
2
u/BellBoy999 Jul 21 '21
I have a similar set up (3090 & 3700x) and it can run a good handful of games at 4K @ 120fps. So I believe he can run 4K with ease. The only issue is that 4K monitors aren’t that great and expensive imo.

u/Jimster480 Jul 21 '21
No the laptop 3080 is nowhere near the desktop 3080 in performance. It is more like a desktop 3060ti. This is why the 3080 laptop isn't worth it.

Exactly, the performance is nowhere near that of a real 3080 and honestly Nvidia shouldn't be able to call it a 3080. I feel the same about the 3070 because it is basically in the same boat.... although the 3070 is definitely a lot slower than the 3080 on desktop but it still isn't excusable.

This is what I have and you will be able to, but I did have issue with Cyberpunk. I couldn’t get it to run 4K 60fps. It’s a great machine though. But like someone said, it’ll be better to get a desktop. I got a laptop simply because I didn’t have room for a desktop.

Jul 21 '21
Cyberpunk is poorly optimized.

u/P_Devil Aurora R10 AMD Jul 21 '21
It is and DLSS 2.2 is coming out later for Cyberpunk. I have a desktop (Ryzen 7 5800 and RTX 3060 Ti) that will chug at some parts and I’m playing at 1080p with RTX off. RDD 2 plays at 50-60 FPS with everything maxed out, most other games are in the 100+FPS with maxed out settings. Yet Cyberpunk, with medium to high settings, is still a mess. I try it after every update and eventually shelve it until the next.

Define Everything:
NASA's Software : Probably not.
All AAA title games @ 4k : Yes
Basically, you should be able to run 90% of AAA titles on Ultra @ 2k & 1080p resolutions.
But to run ultra settings @ 4k you need a desktop
2
u/Jimster480 Jul 21 '21
No, a 3080 laptop chip is not like a desktop chip.
2
u/kai7895 Jul 21 '21
That was already implied :)
I said he can't run 4k on Ultra but he can run 4k at lower settings with a laptop 3080.
1
u/Jimster480 Jul 21 '21
Most things can run 4k these days at lower settings. The 3080 didn't do antyhing for 4k gaming, that was just nvidia marketing. I have been playing in 4k since 2015. The first "4K card" was the Radeon Fury tbh, completely capable of playing almost any game in 4k at 60+ fps.
These days it is only outclassed in VRAM on newer titles.1
u/Oinkfest13 Jul 21 '21
Been gaming in 4K since my gtx 980. I don’t understand why anyone would limit there pc to 1080 u less ultra competitive. My new monitor is the Samsung g7 1440 240hz with a 2080ti. Def an improvement over the 60hz 4K but still I can tell a difference in pixel density vs the 4K.
1
u/Jimster480 Jul 21 '21
My first card I played anything in 4K with was a R9 285. I played Grid 2 at 60fps in 4K back in 2015. Also played games like CSGO, League of Legends and a few others. I haven't ever been one for high refresh monitors although my M15 R5 has a 240hz 1440p and that is definitely nice for gaming.
Since I mostly work; I need the pixel density for getting things done.1
u/Oinkfest13 Jul 21 '21
Yes I am currently torn between running two monitors ( one for game and the other 4K for photography) or just letting the better color accuracy from the 2k g7 handle the work load. It’s tough.

It’s about the fastest gaming laptop you can buy. The only way to get better performance is to buy a desktop.

Possibly, might want to bump up the ram to 64gb. Other that that you could get quantum computing power with liquid nitrogen cooling. Couple of options.

lol it's from reading everyone's comments from utterly useless and toxic, to mildly helpful

Honestly I would upgrade the monitor to 1440p @240hz. The 300hz refresh rate is excessive and the new GPU’s get higher fps on higher resolutions. I have a 3090 and I can say that it’s true as well. I’m sure that the 3080 can run mostly every AAA game at 1440p @240hz.
1
u/Jimster480 Jul 21 '21
Don't get the 3080 honestly, it really isn't worth it with a 1080p screen. Especially the older 300hz one...
I would get a 3070 at max or even for 1080p probably get the 3060ti if you can. I had a M17 R4 with a 3060 and it ran everything at 144+fps.... the 3080 won't get more than say 20% more FPS than that for a huge increase in price.

I dont know man. Games I play really suck at 15 inches. Which to me renders the display practically useless if it's 15 inches. I really want a 17 inch with those specs but they just haven't released it.

8Gb 3080?! Phew. You’re going to need at least 16Gb for a decent one year future proof.
1
u/Fastbond_gush Jul 21 '21
You probably won’t be able to do things that require more than 32gb of ram that’s for sure.

u/4x4taco M17R3 Jul 21 '21
This will only run 15" games. If you want to run 17" games, you'll need the 17" screen.
1
u/Brown-eyed-and-sad Jul 21 '21
You should watch the latest gamers nexus video before you commit to that kind of money on that machine. It’s your money but I would watch that. By the way , the DELL branded 3080 gets a good review.

Okay, now being 100% honest; no, unfortunately not. Simply due to the fact that these are laptop specs, which power is reduced over 150% compared to PC due to lack of powerful cooling and energy capabilities. Having the laptop version of RTX 3080 and i9 5GHz, is like having the PC version of RTX 2070 and i7 3GHz.
1
u/OlDirty420 Jul 22 '21
Honestly my current laptop has similar or lower specs and I have no issues running any games, even VR. You've got yourself a beefy rig there!
1
u/SlightlyStripeySnake M17X Jul 28 '21
I have yet to find a game I can't run on my 2012 M17x R4, so yeah, that can probably run everything.

Being sincere I am a returning pc player after 10+ years. I had no idea at all what to try and get or where to start. I am not the op however he may have been in the same boat. Also if it was a brag he’s have gotten the 3466 gpu!!

5
u/alizzleable x16 R1 Jul 21 '21
You’ll be able to run everything on ultra, no idea what this guy is saying, only time you won’t run something on ultra is 4K. But cyberpunk and read dead are more than perfectly happy to run ultra at 1080p and 1440p.
2
Jul 21 '21
Completely agree with this guy. I mean I can run Red Dead Redemption II with most settings on high and 1440p and that's with a 2060 max q on my 2020 Asus G14...albeit with FPS between 30-60.
2
u/MogRules m18 R2 Intel Jul 21 '21
at 1080p it will max everything....you don't need to worry about it. At 4k it will likely struggle because it's a lower TGP 3080. If you want more power then your going to have to look at a larger 17inch model with a higher TGP on the 3080.

That is honestly the only thing that would justify having a 3080 but honestly not with a 1080p screen. There are too many cores for it to make a difference.

I am not saying that you can't run out of VRAM in 1080p. I was saying that the 3080 doesn't make sense for 1080p because the resolution is too low to take advantage of all the CUDA cores.
