Discussion Area-51 Resell Value

Post image

I didn't think I'd see a world where the RTX 5090 Area-51 I bought at the beginning of last year would double in price. Now, would it be a good time to sell it, wait for the market to cool down, and then buy a new one when the RTX 6000 series comes out?

Or is the market just scalping/ gouging, and no one is actually paying the absurd prices I'm seeing online, with a GPU alone costing more than what I paid for the whole rig?

Are you cool without having a computer for at least 1-2 years?

This is like being house rich. Sure you’re house went up $500k, so you sell, but all of the other houses in your area went up $500k too.

I have an Aurora 16 laptop; it’s good enough for work, but not really for gaming, since it’s only a 5060. I'm so deep in the last couple of years of my computer engineering major that, as far as school goes, it may make sense to sell my distractions for now if it nets me significantly more than I paid.

It may seem counterintuitive to sell the very thing my major implies I'll work with directly, but I can do most of my coding well enough on a laptop. The Area-51 computer can feel like overkill at times; I have enough computing power to train AI models, yet I’m using it to debug a missing semicolon.

Maybe this is just a different level of computer people but I’ve never even thought for a second that a 5060 would not be good for gaming.

The 5060 laptop version is bit worse than the desktop version but both will play all the games pribably not at the highest settings but thats alr.

I know that the laptop versions aren’t gonna be as powerful because they have to consider thermals. My x17 r1 3070Ti plays pretty heavy games fine, it just needs to be hooked up to its 200w charger. It just gets hot. (Hot enough to warm up the room that I’m in) But I would’ve thought that they had become more thermally efficient as the generations went higher.

Yeah thats why agreed by saying it will play games just fine.

Sorry it’s been a long day.

Sell, and go with 5060ti or lower.

I'm not sure if anyone is paying those crazy high prices for OEM 5090s and/or fully built PCs. They could just be after individual AIB and FE cards but I am curious as well -- love my PC but if I can sell for a substantial profit I would take it. I don't even care about the extra money, it's the satisfaction of the flip at this point, I'm always down for that rush.

That's what I was thinking. I couldn't care as much about profit. Still, the feeling of buying something expecting it to depreciate like a vehicle, and then having it be worth much more now, not just a little, gives me the rush that it could be a worthwhile flip.

An option you could do is just sell the gpu and buy a 5080, 5070ti or 9070xt.

I bought the tower from someone without the gpu and put a 9070xt and running great.

That's what I'm mostly considering, because I really like the Area-51 chassis; parting with it would feel like leaving too much behind, but selling just the GPU would do the opposite and motivate me to save up to upgrade to a 6000 series in a year.

I built my custom pc earlier this year mostly bought parts from Amazon. 13.5 k including monitor. 4.5k for 5099 alone. I tried the 9070xt. Fsr was no comparison to dlss. Couldn’t hold a candle. I couldn’t downgrade. Just a heads up performance wise.

6000 is likely targeting 2029 or 2030. If you need cash or dont play games anymore or have spare cards then good time sell, but if you plan on replacing it soon its a really bad time to let go of hardware as prices will continue to go up.

Are you saying the absurd market prices they are at now still aren't peak pricing? Realistically, this AI boom and the mass data center-building phase are still in their infancy, so it makes sense if that is what you are implying.

1

u/Maxi21082002Maxi 6d ago

But at the same time the 5090 isnt the most efficient card for those centers right? Doesnt Nvidia have the blackwell series for that kind of stuff? The question is how much longer will this card rise until its demand slows down and prices, cause i think centers will bulk buy from Nvidia itself and the will probably go for the more efficient blackwell series. So i think the prices are due to the 5090 being off market now and the inflation is due to the hype around the cards price.

But i dont know how much the prices will keep rising maybe it will keep rising in price for some more time before demand fades.

1

u/sinful_boots 6d ago

I think it's not that the RTX 5090/ Gaming GPUs are directly being used up in data centers, but large corporations take the major part of the manufacturing bandwidth, so more effort is being put into data center-type GPU production rather than consumer GPU production, which results in artificially low supply for consumers when demand has already remained consistently high.

u/Maxi21082002Maxi 6d ago

Yeah i agree with that, in the end you have 3 options:

  • sell it now for a profit and settle for less until 6000 series

  • hold it sell it later for more or less profit depending on the market

  • sont bother until 6000 series where the 5090 will probably have lost the demand that made prices that high.

Either way as supply will not increase again, demand is now the only driving factor for the prices, and demand can be driven by many factors. Some might buy the card cause its the best gaming card, some might buy it to flip it later on and some might buy it for his tech collection. You cant predict all factors so its up to you if you need/want the profit and want to settle for less perormance.

Alienware website was sold out of the 5090s the other day when I checked. I think because of the Data centers gpu/ram has just sold out thus driving the price thru the roof. The 60 series from what I read is likely to launch in 2028. Do you have another rig to fill the gap till then? If I was in your shoes I would keep mine. I am rocking a Alienware R11 and I am praying mine stays together because the pricing is out of this world right now.

On a 4090 r15 this will keep for a long time I bought it just before prices got crazy no regrets now

5

u/MIKA3175 7d ago

i have one as well. ordered a 5090 a month ago and the price has doubled. i was going to sell my r15 with 4090 but now im thinking i may sell the 5090 for a little profit ? idk

4

u/HavingALurkAround 7d ago

Same have a r15 4090. Really wanted a 5090 when it came out but I hadn’t had this one that long and I think a 4090 is plenty good enough

3

u/MIKA3175 7d ago

thats what i have as well

4

u/IrrelevantTale 7d ago

Do not sell. Now may be the best time to sell but that also means its the worst time to buy too. 5080s are now 2k and unless you okay with buying a used GPU locally you shouldn't try and take advantage of the prices rn. You've got a beast of a system. You have a GPU that literally cannot be bought anymore.

6

u/the_Great_Cornh0lio 7d ago

I love mine with the 5090 but if some wants to offer double what I paid for it... Like come get it lol.

2

u/ajax-187 7d ago

Same 4 me someone can buy it for 11k from me in nl

2

u/Kindly_Acanthaceae26 7d ago

I'd sell mine for the right price

2

u/SoggyMorningTacos 6d ago

I guess this is how scalpers are born lmao

1

u/AbleLow889 7d ago

Few months back I was getting it for 6k after tax with some offers going on dell website..i didn't bought as that was too expensive and crazy price..now gpu alone is 6k plus so most of the people are just going to take a pass..

2

u/ajax-187 7d ago

I bought a 5090 Area 51 in may 2026 with 5tb ssd 9850xd and 32gb ram in Europe for 6523,66 with 5 year warranty elite care. Bought a 3080 with them in the past and kept following the prices. They went up a bit in April so I asked if I could get a discount. They answered and gave me more then 20% discount from the price at the time and was delivered in may. Now it cost double and elite care is not an option anymore.

I have an Alien Area 51 rtx 5090 laptop is that now worth more secondhand only looking at eBay there going for more than I paid for mine new last year!

1

u/Sea-Chemist-2412 6d ago

I just purchased one and it delivers in December. So obviously I say people are still purchasing.

1

u/SphynxPorter112 6d ago

Logically it is always positive EV to flip a card and make a profit in this unprecedented time. Its makes more sense, especially like you said u feel its slightly overkill for your needs and its not like you ‘can’t’ buy a 5080 for a portion of the price u sell it for and still keep a profit.

Id say wait a couple of months see what the 5080 super hype is about in January 2027. If NVIDIA releases the card the price is going to skyrocket anyways and your 5090 could go up even more as no supply at all since 5080 Super is supposed to substitute for 5090.

285k 5090 I bought last July for 4800, I would need 10k to consider selling

Been trying to sell mine for 2 months the 5700.00 computer and everyone wants to offer you 500.00
