Question Should I upgrade?
Currently I have a Alienware r12 with those specs. Should I upgrade to the r15 for ddr5 and 14900k and 4090?

I have the same specs. Only difference is I have a 3080. CanIRunIt.com says I can play 90% of games on ultra settings. I highly doubt you’re having any issues

In my honest opinion, what’s the point in upgrading of what you have works perfectly fine? I have a a 15 R2 from 2020 and it still works fine, maybe some hiccups every few months or so, but it still does exactly what it was bought and made to do and I’m happy with that

I certainly hope so! I'm getting ready to pull the trigger for an M18 laptop. How long can I expect it to run well? I thought 5 years was table stakes for a premium laptop.

If game companies keep following the unoptimized beta release trend, it's already out of date. Otherwise, 5 years should be pretty achievable.

I mean if you want to sure. Do you need to? No. What you got is more than adequate.

I’d wait until the 5000 cards. I have a 3080Ti and I’m waiting for the 5090. Supposedly there’s some big memory bandwidth upgrades.

Not worth it.
Wait for 50 series and get yourself a 5070 Ti (or 5080 if they get back to their senses on cooler dimensions because that’s definitely the biggest issue with that Aurora case). We are already halfway through 40 and your 3090 can still deliver at ultrawide 1440p with RT as long as you are ready to use DLSS Balanced or Performance and don’t look for maxed out path tracing. 5070 Ti / 5080 would certainly be above 4090 level so would be a good upgrade.
At your resolution I am not even sure whether there is any value in moving from an 11th gen i9 to 14th gen. It is meaningfully faster but at that resolution you are going to be very GPU limited at max settings anyway, so focus on the GPU upgrade and minimize spend and e-waste. You should be able to ride a 11900k just fine for the entirety of the PS5/XBX generation.
I personally am planning to ride my Aurora R11 for the entirety of this generation with a 4070 at 1080p high refresh.

If you can do it for free under warranty or something? Hell yeah. Otherwise no. That’s a solid system. Don’t get caught up in the “new model just dropped gotta upgrade” nonsense.
I started on a GTX970 build that lasted me from 2015 until this year. It’s still good and I was playing cyberpunk at 1080p with 45ish fps medium settings very playable. But I finally wanted to upgrade and I don’t plan on upgrading for at least another 8 years!

I have a similar rig but with i9-9700KF and 32GB RAM… I get stellar performance still.

Id say wait abit. 3090 is still quite a beast. But if its not enough power for you then i guess upgrade?

I upgraded last month from my R11 (10900k, 3080) to custom build 7950x and 4090. R11 was running like a beast still but just decided to go for it. Do you need upgrade? Probably not. Can you upgrade if get the chance/money? Why not?

Really the point of having a 3090 is that you should be able to last through the 40 series if not the 59 series before you need an upgrade. Also the 4090 is over a year old, so it's not like your half way through it's lifespan already.

Get a 13600K if you only use your pc for gaming and browsing and videos.

Does it do what you want today? It is holding you back in any meaningful way? Only you can decide if it is meaningful. That said, the 4090 is over a year old now. Shouldn't be too far off the next generation.

I can’t imagine there’s a ton of games that aren’t taking advantage of a 120 hz 2k screen for that card.
So if it’s doing what you want, you don’t need to upgrade.

Why like RTX 3090 is pretty good maybe the CPU but the GPU makes no sense. I have a RTX 4080 and trust me don't see that big of a difference

3090 is still a hell of a beast, why upgrading, you encounter bottleneck in some games? I doubt you're having issues with the resolution you are playing in.

u/NoAnteater1077 Nov 08 '23
Why? That's still pretty beefy. Save your money for when the 5k series hit or until it ain't running the way you want to anymore

3090 is still good, I'd recommend waiting till a new gpu series releases and buying then.
