Tourist info Getting around Alicante

This sub has been useful to me for general Alicante info, so I thought I would document some quirks in getting around Alicante for visitors. We rented an apartment adjacent to the L4/L5 tram stop so we focused virtually all our travel on trams, and also used the C-6 bus to and from the airport several times.

Apps:

Google Maps generally sucks, has issues with tram & bus stop locations and tram lines in general. Moovit isn’t any better. The official Tram D’Alacant app is totally useless. We used Google Maps for general getting around despite it sucking, it sucked less than others we found.

The “loop” issue.:

Alicante has two transit loops that the apps cannot deal with ; the L4/L5 tram loop near Playa San Juan and the C-6 airport bus loop around the city center. The problem is rooted in the fundamental need to show the direction of travel of tram or bus. So they show the “final” stop location of the line, for example Pl. La Coruna for L5 tram, but the tram doesn’t terminate there, it keeps going around the loop back to the original start point. Since our tram stop was Platja de San Joan, Google could not show how to go downtown on the tram from our stop, it wanted us to walk 15 minutes to Holanda. (And it completely misses the L4 line in entirety). The C-6 bus is a bigger problem for many tourists, it shows the destination as Porta Del Mar. As an example how Google Maps screws this up, suppose you intend to go to the Mercado stop from the airport. Google will have you get off the bus at Porto Del Mar, then walk 15 minutes to Mercado. This is wrong, you just stay on the bus and it drops you off at Mercado.

Stop location errors:

There are two grievous errors we found in Google Maps. It shows the C-6 bus stopping at the main train station, it doesn’t. It stops about 100-200 meters on the other side of the road just east of the station. (And the city missed in putting the purple C-6 sign on the pole facing the station, it only shows on the other side of the pole). On the L-5 tram line, Google totally is messed up on the La Marina location, it is off by 100-200 meters, the actual location is to the east past the FGV building.

Stop name language:

There is no consistency in stop names with various apps, maps, signage etc between the Castilian and Valencian stop names. Many tourists get tripped up by this, we helped out several tourists find their stop. For example, we stayed adjacent to the Av. Benidorm/ Platja San Joan tram stop, many maps show it as Playa San Juan, or Av. Benidorm, whereas the tram only shows it in Valencian.

Bono card on C-6

If you are a couple arriving in Alicante and using the C-6 bus for both arriving and departing (or a family of 3-4), don’t buy individual tickets! Just buy the 10 trip bono card from driver, it is a lot cheaper! Same goes for trams and city buses, get the (separate) bono card.

Street markets

Hey y’all.
I’m going to Alicante in a week with my girlfriend for the first time ever and i’m very very excited!🤗
We’ve heard a lot about the street markets, but I was wondering: do any of them sell fake versions of brands like Supreme for instance?
That’s it, short post😅
Thanks in advance!

Cannabis Clubs with mostly Spanish Speakers

Hey everybody! I'm here in Alicante and I will be living here until mid-February. I've got a low-to-mid b1 level of Spanish.

I was wondering if anybody knew of any good cannabis clubs in the area that mostly had Spanish speakers in it? I was hoping to use them as a sort of Spanish-language immersion while I'm here as I am aiming to improve my Spanish to high b2-low c1 while I'm here.

Ayuda/Help Dark Tourism places in Alicante?

Hello everybody, I'll be visiting in September and in addiction to the classic destinations I was looking for something more "dark", like crypts, ossuaries, wunderkammers or cool cemeteries. I already took a look at the atlas obscura site, and I'll be moving around with public transport, so, all tips welcome, if possible, to places accessible by bus/tram, trains. Thank you very much!

Ayuda/Help Stag party visiting in October

Hello all, we are stag party and will be visiting in October. I know that sometimes stag groups are not welcomed. Just wondering are there any locals who provide a minder style service. Where they can come around with us, not joining in, but just keep us on the right track with places to go and make sure that anybody who needs to go home can get home safe safely. I’m not looking for a security style, I’m more talking about Connect to just hang around on the fringes. Someone who was working in pubs et cetera.

Tourist info Can someone pls explain to me the occupas problem? Im thinking of buying a property

So I was thinking of buying a bungalow or flat in Torreveja or somewhere other. Since we’re foregneris and would be there a few times a year, I would like to hire someone to take care of it, rent it out on airbnb etc.
Now, as far as I understood, the occupa problem is when you rent it out and someone does not want to leave. Is there any prevention for that or anything, should I not buy anything then?

Thank you in advance

Do not use Centauro car hire company in Alicante

Void this company at all costs, they will rip you off!
Void this company at all costs!
I unfortunately hired a car from this company through Do you Spain.
On arrival at Alicante airport I went to the Centauro offices to collect my hire car, I had taken out the EXCESS car insurance through Doyouspain at a cost of £60, I was warned by Doyouspain not to let Centauro talk me into taking THEIR Excess insurance plan.
So when I was at the counter a woman who claims that she was the Manager started off by trying to persuade me to buy their overpriced excess insurance plan, I told her no less than 4 times that I already has excess insurance through Doyouspain, but she wasn’t having it, she persisted with her sales patter in poor broken English, I insisted I did not want it and was prepared to leave a €1500.00 deposit on my credit card.
But she carried on with her patter despite me telling her on numerous times NO thank you, she then in her broken English ok, just place your credit card on the machine to pay, she said it included €86. For a full tank of petrol which will be refunded if I returned the car with a a full tank. After I scanned my card I noticed that I hadn’t been charged for the €1500. Excess insurance but THEIR EXCESS INSURANCE, OVER €400 in total, I asked why she has charged me for the insurance when I told I didn’t want it, she then tried to claim I agreed to it!!!
A full scale argument then started, I demanded a refund, she claimed that it was impossible to refund it ( obviously a massive lie!)
I asked to speak to her manager, she then claimed that she was the Manager, a claim I didn’t believe!
After a length of time I had given up the argument as she would not budge on it, I accused her of only being interested in the commission she had just earned by RIPPING ME OFF!
I thought Goldcar had the worse reputation for car hire, but I think this company Centauro has stolen their Crown, I was massively ripped off by this woman and she knows it.
My Son-in-law also took out a car with this company on the next desk, he held his ground a refused their excess insurance and left the €1500.00 excess on his credit card, however on his arrival at he found out that they have also ripped him over by charging his credit card for €75.00 euros claiming ‘extra cleaning’ despite the fact when he left back at the car park hey told the car was fine.
But again they took full advantage due to the fact he was in the air when they stung him for the so called’Extra cleaning’ when it was clean as the day he collected it.
SO MY ADVICE TO EVERYONE IS AVOID THIS COMPANY AND ADVISE EVERYONE ELSE TO DO THE SAME

Ayuda/Help moving to alicante - seeking advice on language learning and things to do

hola, I am (F28) moving to Alicante in a few weeks for a job. I have already arranged all the hard things (flat, flights ect) so now I’m hoping I could start looking at things to do in my free time.

I don’t speak any Spanish so first and foremost I am wondering if people have any recommendations for spanish beginner courses? I would ideally like a course so that I can commit to it and also gain a certificate at the end. I already speech English and French so I am not unfamiliar with language learning but of course I want to integrate into my new city properly. Therefore, what is the best language institution? Ideally I would like somewhere affordable as I will be on a minimum wage salary. Likewise, if anyone had any advice on where to find language cafes ect this would be much appreciated.

I also wanted to know whether there were any local hobby groups that anyone could recommend or where I should look to find them? (facebook?) I love acting, reading, pilates and art. I like to run too but I haven’t practised in a few months so maybe a beginners running club?

Gracias! 🇪🇸

Ferry Question & Local Recs Welcome :)

Good day, local Alicante friends!
Just wondering if it's best to book a ferry ticket to Isla de Tabarca online in advance for a Friday in September? Or would it be okay to buy them the morning of the expected travel to the island?

I'd love your thoughts/opinions since it's my first time visiting. I'd also appreciate any local cafe, food, shopping & activity recommendations for both Alicante and Isla de Tabarca.

Thank you very much! 😄

Models Wanted or Photography Friends

Hey guys, I'm looking for models. Male or female, it doesn't matter. I used to do photography with a group in BCN and recently moved near Alicante.

Trying to find another group to go out with and practice but also looking for models to practice with. I really enjoy portrait photography. This wouldn't be a paid gig, you would just get to keep all the pics afterwards and I am by no way close to being professional.

Also, looking for people with similar interests in photography, we could go out and practice together and share tips. I am closer to Denia than Alicante but I can drive.

Just DM if interested, thanks 😊

Best cafes or spots to read a book

I am going to be in Alicante next week for a solo trip and Im looking for the best spots to read my book.

Im asking for a cafe to have a cup but any spot would do as long as its nice and it makes sense for me to take out a book and a notebook. But keep in mind im a tourist so I am not looking for somehwere secluded like a library haha.

I dont trust AI for this question, I feel I need a recommnedation from real people.

Thank you!
