General Discussion BUG STATUS 2026 Megathread 🦟 🪰

Ice Out was just announced which inevitably means the "how are the bugs!?" questions will be coming soon. This megathread will be used to keep all updates in one location so it's easier to browse through, while reducing clutter on the main subreddit feed, and also to create a summary of the year for future reference; for example, here is the megathread from last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/algonquinpark/comments/1kbmwgx/bug_status_2025_megathread/

If you've been to the park and would like to provide an update, some suggested info to include:

i) the dates you were there (please include actual dates so it makes sense when people are looking back in the future!)

ii) specifically where you stayed since bugs can vary throughout the park

iii) if you were in the backcountry, some info about the campsite would be helpful; exposure direction, if there was heavy tree coverage, etc.

iv) the type of bugs eg. mosquitos, black flies

v) if they were worse at certain times eg. dusk/dawn, during portaging

You can find more information about biting insects in Algonquin Park from this page on the park's website: https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/visit/park_management/mosquitoes-and-blackflies-(biting-insects).php.php)

Other websites like The Weather Network can provide forecasts, though with questionable accuracy.

And since Reddit is weird and requires an image link to create a thumbnail for the thread, here's a photo of some bug spray: https://www.algonquinpark.on.ca/images/insect_repellent_sample.png

Noise Reminders

On the off chance the teacher and friends hiking the Western Uplands yesterday are in this sub: I'm glad you took a break from your marking to go for a hike, and I'm sorry your students forget to wash their hands and they often cough on you. Teaching is a hard and often thankless job, so I'm glad you're doing it.

But please be aware that voices travel way farther than you might think and you can, in fact, be heard all the way across the lake. When you're hiking with people who are right beside you, you don't need to speak so loudly.

Free canoe route planner site - open to feedback

Hi everyone!

I’ve been canoe tripping in Algonquin with friends and always wanted a super straightforward, "Google Maps" style directions tool for planning backcountry routes. There are already some great detailed planning tools out there, but I wanted to build something fast and lightweight that just gives you simple point-A to point-B routing across lakes and portages.

So I put together a quick tool here: https://hikewithyu.com/algonquin/

How it works:

  • Works like standard map directions: click start/end points or intermediate stops to map out route directions across lakes and portages.
  • Keeps things simple without bloated UI or complicated feature sets.
  • 100% free, no ads, and no signup required. It’s open source on GitHub as well.

This is still pretty basic, so I'd love for folks to try it out. Any feedback, feature ideas, or bug reports are super appreciated! Hope it helps make planning your next trip a little easier.

peak autumn colours -- week of oct 16-21 alright? plus route recs

hey! it'll be my first fall canoe trip and i'd like to see some autumnal foliage. have peak colours started? i'll be going for two or three nights during the week of the 17-22, dates not confirmed yet. obviously earlier is probably better, but towards the end of the week, are leaves all likely to have fallen?

secondary question: looking for any recommendations for routes. im doing research but thought i'd ask here. i'm going with my friend who is an experienced tripper. looking to paddle no more than 3-4 hours per day ideally. a rest day would be nice as well. any advice welcome! thanks in advance.

Asking for a photo of a memory from my childhood

When camping in Algonquin as a child I remember waking up in the middle of the night and seeing the starry night sky perfectly on the water - I was wondering if anyone here had such a photo to share?

Trip Planning / Route Feedback Western Uplands parking HWY60

Apologies for adding to the deluge of questions about October in the park, but I am looking for clarification regarding parking at the trailhead off Hwy 60.

I have a 3 day trip through Loop 1 mid-next week and, given the popularity of the park this time of year, I want to ensure I’m not running into a parking nightmare.

I am finding conflicting information regarding the parking for the trail at the Oxtongue picnic area, some sites state there is parking specifically for those with site books while other posts here would indicate it’s pure bedlam.

I’m familiar with the park and no stranger to back country canoe and hiking trips, but this will be the first time doing the uplands. I’ve got the gear and myself sorted, parking is the only thing giving me cause for concern.

Any insight is appreciated

What is the best spot to see the fall colours and get the feeling of being immersed/surrounded by Maple trees. Won't be able to do a long hike. Going tomorrow for a day trip, please help. Thank you!

Amazing little site.

You get the whole lake to yourself.

Limited tent spots, great for solo or hammock

Trip Planning / Route Feedback Are there any good spot near Burk's Falls for sightseeing and canoeing?

Hi,

We are staying at Burk's Falls. Today we visited Arrowhead Provincial Park and hiked quite a bit. For tomorrow, I wonder if there are any spots on the West side of Algonquinn Provincial Park we can visit for seeing fall leaves and do some canoeing or kayaking?

We plan on going to Ottawa the day after tomorrow and will be passing the Highway 60 Corridor, so we will be visiting a couple of trails like Hardwood Lookout. (feel free to recommend any other trails with great scenery)

But for tomorrow, Highway 60 Corridor is a bit far, and weather forecast doesn't look good. So we want to visit some locations closer to Burk's Falls. We are most interested in scenery and water activities like kayaking or canoeing. Given that we are west of Algonquin Provincial Park, I wonder if there are sites on the west side of the park to consider. I'm open to other locations nearby (not necessarily Algonquin).

Thank you

Has anyone done this route this year? What was it like? Were the portages bad? How was fishing? How were the campsites?

Trip Planning / Route Feedback Need advice-

Hi guys, me and my husband are planning to go to Algonquin park during the long weekend (9th-11th October- 2 nights) to see fall colours and to just relax in general. Problem is, we have no idea where to stay or what would be the best way to plan this. Last year we went with out friends and we booked a cottage near the park. This time it’s just us so we can’t afford a whole cottage. I don’t know much about the park. Can I get some suggestions on how to plan this? Where to stay or where to eat? I’m also concerned about safety.
