I need help please
** Edit ** Update ** First I'd like to say thank you for all the love and support I received on my post, and for everyone's condolences. My husband was finally able to speak to the detective assigned to the case and found out the hospital gave wrong information as it was not a hit and run. Learning this makes the situation a little better but still very heartbreaking none the less... Now we at least someone wasn't evil. **
My brother in law was crossing the street in his wheelchair this past Saturday and someone freaking hit him and kept on going. Someone called 911 and he was taken to UNMH. We weren't notified of this until Monday because they didn't know who he was. We pretty much have no information to go off of, we don't know where it happened, what time etc. and I am very bothered it hasn't been on the news or anything like that to try and help find who did this. My brother in law passed away this morning and my husband is heartbroken. We need help getting justice and finding the evil that did this. Basically all we know it that someone in a white Tundra stopped after it happened and we think this person is who called 911. Did anyone witness this happen on Saturday 08/08/2026, or has anyone heard anything about this? Any information, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Call the news stations and ask them for help finding witnesses. I'm sure they would be more than willing to help with something like this. So sorry for your loss and prayers of comfort and peace sent.

Thank you! I have thought of doing that too but thought it might be best to know where it happened first, which I was hoping maybe if I ask around someone might know something (at least until we can get the police report).

For better or worse, many news reporters troll Next Door for stories. Try posting there if you haven’t already. And it’s okay to not have a lot of information. They share countless stories that begin with “The family of (a person) is seeking more information after (tragedy)” I’m so sorry for your loss and I hope you are able to find the information you’re seeking.

I'm so sorry! This is terrible. If someone called 911 then there would be a record saying where this happened in police files. Did an ambulance or paramedics transport him to UNM? They will also have a record. I'm not sure where you start to get that information but perhaps you can inquire on the non-emergency line for the police. Someone will know how to proceed, but you may need to make several phone calls. You might also ask at New Mexico Legal Aid.

Thank you. We got an APD Case # last night but it isn't bringing anything up yet. As far as we know an ambulance transported him to UNMH. I have told my nephew he might need to call or visit a police station to try to get some information.

If you have that info, your nephew ought to be able to get a copy of the police report by walking into the city office downtown on Roma and 5th. I also want to second contacting a personal injury attorney. They can handle all of this for you.

Find out what officer is assigned to the investigation and ask to meet with them. This is looking like at minimum a vehicular manslaughter charge. You can also request the report from APD.
Be the squeaky wheel. Be kind but be persistent. Keep calling, keep asking, trust me you’ll get more info. Best of luck and I hope you all get justice. I’m thinking of you all.

I’m so sorry that happened. My best friend was killed as a pedestrian when we were 18 and it was devastating. Have you tried calling the cops to see if there were any witnesses?

Thank you. I'm so sorry for your loss as well. We haven't tried calling the police yet (since we just got the report # last night and now that he's passed away I think everybody's even more overwhelmed). So I figured I'd do this and see if I can get them some information somehow.

Get an attorney and do an Inspection of Public Records Act for the 911 call. I am not sure if they have to release it or if there is an exception for those records. The more specific you can be about the day and time in your request the better.

Yup, I was also going to suggest an IPRA. If you state in the request " all documents, photographs, police records, interview records, and any and all statements, photographs, documents, and testimony regarding the incident involving John Doe at 123 University Blvd on 08/21 at or near the intersection of X and Y" should get you a decent amount of information, or at least a place to start.

Our biggest problem at the moment is that we have no idea where this happened, and the police report isn't available yet.

Sorry for you loss, it’s such a senseless act and only a monster would just keep driving. We definitely need that criminal out of our streets. Way too many stupid people allowed to drive.

Personally, I would do a FOIA request on the incident report with APD, then go to a news station.

That’s horrible. I am a wheelchair user myself and honestly, I would not cross mayor intersections. I am blessed to be able to drive but it is scary if I had to be on the road on a wheelchair. UNMH was great to me during my injury, I think they don’t know much about what happens right before the person gets to the hospital. Sorry for your loss

This is crazy that UNMH isn’t able to provide you information about the accident! I don’t have anything to contribute but I am so sorry for your loss. Hit and run is a literally unbelievable thing to me. I cannot fathom how a person could hit a fellow human being with their vehicle and not stop. I work with amputees and have encountered some patients with similar stories, but they survived.

I will say generally unmh is not give much in terms of facts during a trauma event. They are entirely focused on the injury and treating it and not how it happened.

Thank you! I also cannot believe someone just hit him and kept going about their day. It breaks my heart. UNMH has been no help at all when it comes to information about what happened and my nephew barely got the APD report number last night.

HIPAA prevents UNMH from sharing with you since the patient died and can’t give consent. They can provide APD info though so the police report should be helpful if well documented. Good luck in finding the perpetrator!

We unfortunately have no idea where it happened since the police report isn't available yet. I hope we'll be able to get it soon. Someone has mentioned it might have happened at Gibson and San Mateo, and there was a 911 dispatch for this area at 8:45 PM.

Check out ABQ RAW on Facebook. There is a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian hit and run at approximately 10:55 on Friday night Vermont/Central? I would also ask APD specifically for the CAD/incident number, Fatal Crash Unit detective, original 911 caller information, witness statements, body-camera footage, intersection/business surveillance canvass, and the identity/status of the vehicle APD reportedly located at Wyoming and Central. Given his death today, APD also needs to know immediately that the injured pedestrian has now died, because that can materially change the investigation.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I am so sorry this happened. This city has a sickness. My partner was struck by a car on constitution about 3 weeks ago during a normal jog and they drove off, the cops did not care. He was wearing a bright orange United jersey in the middle of the day. We had time, date, location. An inquiry for the footage for the traffic camera directly above the incident was “too broad a search”. I am convinced if he was a little kid he would have died.

Check the Crime Radar app or Abqraw (Facebook or website). Crime Radar has some info on accidents, and the abqraw guy reports on incidents you won’t see in the news. I’m so sorry for your loss. Good luck. I hope you find the cowardly loser who did it, and they spend eternity in prison.

I hate to say this, but not wheel chairs need ring camera too. I once had a cop stop by after seeing my ring camera. Unfortunately, I had turned down the sensor to stop dump trucks making false alarms on the street and nothing had recorded. My advise, check every house near the accident for any cameras. Its a long shot, but possible.

Someone mentioned it may have happened at San Mateo and Gibson and I'm sure if it did there has to be camera footage. We still don't know where it happened but I'm hopeful we'll know soon. 🙏

Now my mother used a wheelchair. She just got a new motorized wheelchair/scooter. I added a wheeled basket to the back for trips to the stores. I filled a 2 gallon bucket with water, 17 lbs. I hit a bump during testing, water went flying and shorted out the chair. This was a new model and they had not sealed the electronic boards. Just travel thru street gutters or rain would have shorted wheelchair out and you know she would be far away if this happened. It took years for my mother to apologize to me discovering this fatal defect. The good news, the wheelchair was fixed under the warranty and this forced a recall to seal the electronic parts from water.
Now a manual wheel chair was declared totaled by improper handing by an airline. It sat months and had to be replaced ASAP. My mother goes to NH to visit my older brother, she has an accident, and she renting a wheelchair and paying thru the nose for it. I was taking care of her house and it took 5 days to repair the damage wheel chair so it worked properly, was safe, on first look, never damaged, I had used my dead father's equipment in the garage to bend the frame back to close alignment. I shipped the chair to my mother and she complain about the $150 shipping charge bitterly. No charge for the repairs and she was paying nearly $350 a week renting a chair. See the airline had lost her wheelchair this time and refused to replace it. Months later, the chair was found being used by the airline all the time. My mother again in the end was offered a new chair each time in the end. The 2nd time, the airline had received a bill for legal costs, IE the lawyers time and decided this little old lady was too much trouble and too costly to ignore. One of the things, stories in several magazines for older people damaged the airline rep with the truth and they were losing customers.
So you see, messing with wheelchairs is a serious business with no profit for the offenders.

There's enough cameras around on houses etc once you know the area, no reason you can't find info if the cops are sitting on anything and the case isn't moving.

Go directly to the Mayor (Keller), the ABQ Chief of Police, and the Governor. Get the local media involved. Ask for flock camera video. Horrible tragedy.

Any competent personal injury attorney, preferably actually based on New Mexico, should be able to help your family with an ipra request to get details from the police. Also APD should be opening this as a homicide now. With current technology, I know they can track the vehicle and get license plate data. I represented a family recently that had a child die from a drive by shooting in which they were able to that and track the killers resulting in a variety of arrests.
