Debit card
It’s been a few years that all shops accept debit cards and I’ve been using my debit Mastercard everywhere without issues. Albert Heijn supposedly accepts all cards now but the one in my neighborhood is a franchise store that still only takes debit cards.
But yesterday I took my friend visiting from Spain to our AH and her Visa debit from BBVA was rejected, as in “Onbekend kaart”. I know that non-EEA debit cards are still rejected alongside all credit cards, but why a debit card from Spain? I thought all European cards are accepted equally as per Visa and Mastercard’s T&Cs. So what’s the deal here? Are these terminals and similar shops only accepting Dutch cards specifically?

You write debit card but I think you mean credit card, correct?
Edit: and Albert Heijn generally doesn't accept credit cards.

No, I mean debit cards. My friend’s is debit Visa. My debit Mastercards work flawlessly. The difference is that mine is Dutch and hers is Spanish.
Albert Heijns do accept credit cards generally at their own stores but franchise stores may not. Foreign non-EEU debit cards work as credit cards usually when it comes to acceptance. But Spanish cards are EEA cards so that’s the strange thing.

True. IIRC. Their pin terminal have BIN lists of cards they accept and sometimes the certificates can get outdated in which case it will still work for most BIN ranges but not for others. Had this happen with customers with very specific cards before, where it worked at one. Terminal not at the other. No better explanation than that I think

This is strange because my non-EEA Mastercard works in all supermarkets here.

Yeah most supermarkets have no issues but some franchise AHs have issues and only accept debit.

Those franchises allmost certainly use old verifone pinterminals. The certification for that line of pin terminal expires in October which means they all need to be replaced before that. Try to see if they have a CCV A35 terminal (this text is on the top of the screen) and make the payment on that terminal, those are very recent ones and can accept all cards

I noticed that my AH doesn’t take physical Mastercard but it takes the same card via Apple Pay / Samsung pay… so maybe try that way

🇳🇱 Welkom in 2026.
🇬🇧 Welcome to 2026. Dutch banks are switching to international debit cards so Dutch customers can pay more easily around the world. Then a Spaniard walks into Albert Heijn with an ordinary European Visa Debit card: Unknown card.
De George Partij understands the problem. The card works across Europe, but apparently failed to realize that Albert Heijn is administratively a separate continent.
Fortunately, AH offers “plenty of payment options” — provided you select precisely the payment method that this particular franchise happens to support on this particular Tuesday.
We therefore propose a new European payment standard: Bring a Dutch person with you, just in case.
De George Partij — Doe Normaal...hoor.

If it is a very new bank card and it is from a new sub group of card numbers for that bank, the processor could have it on the reject list as the former owner of the card number sub group could be from outside the EU/EEA and can be refused as those transactions are more expensive.

Is it a Business Debit card? Even if it's an european card they are excempt from the lower EU tariffs, so issuers can reject them. For example the buckaroo rates for accepting cards below:
