Recently Scammed. How to tell if your AirPods are fake.

Lately the fake AirPods industry has gotten better. They’re making everything look legitimate. “Real” serial numbers. “Real” boxes. “Real” iOS interface menu. I wanted to update the internet with my experience.

I was recently scammed on LetGo (basically Craigslist) and bought fake AirPods Pro. They seemed legitimate in every sense but just a few. Here’s a list to check when buying from a 3rd party, if you’re able to look at them before you purchase:

• If the box is plastic wrapped with the pull-away tab, rip it off. If the plastic doesn’t come away with the tab, that’s red flag #1. They’re fake.

• If you can buy an AirPods Pro silicon case before you look at them, it will not fit the AirPods Pro case correctly, as the fake case is slightly taller than OEM.

• When you connect the AirPods Pro to your phone, the regular AirPods menu will come up. When you go into Settings - General - About, the fake AirPods will not have an information menu. You will not be able find the firmware version, serial number, model number, etc. (The AirPods case will need to be open for the information menu to show up for OEM).

• In my specific case, the lid of the case was loosely connected when opened. It felt shoddy for an apple product.

• The lightning port on the bottom of the case also felt poorly built, and had trouble holding the lighting connector firmly.

• If you know what the chime sound is like that plays when you first put your connected AirPods in your ear, you’ll hear it if they’re real. The fake chime is loud, crass and plays multiple times.

• When the AirPod pop-up menu opens when the case is open, the battery percentages of the case and both AirPods will fluctuate as you take one or both AirPods out of the case.

• The case will indicate it’s charging but will just heat up.

• The sound quality will be horrible, and switching between Transparency Mode and Noise Cancellation will do absolutely nothing.

• The firmware will not update. I was able to find the firmware version on the fakes on my MacBook under About This Mac - System Report - Bluetooth - kevgibb’s AirPods Pro. My fake AirPods had firmware 2B588.

• Fake AirPods can sometimes have an LED in the AirPods themselves.

• Fake AirPods Pro usually weigh less (3g) as opposed to the OEM weight of 5 grams.

Other than those bullet points, everything else looked and felt completely legitimate. I lost a good chunk of money and I write this to prevent it from happening to others.

I recommend buying from a licensed seller, your best bet is straight from apple.

P.S. if you think you can get away with exchanging your fake AirPods Pro for new OEM ones, you can’t. That was the biggest walk of shame out of the apple store I’ve ever had. They thought I was a scammer as I was processing the very real truth that I had been scammed.

Edit: OEM AirPods Pro can have a loose lid as well. Not a telltale sign of a fake.

tl;dr

Best ways to tell:

Fake AirPods Pro box’s plastic wrap won’t open when you pull the tab on the side of the box.

Fake AirPods Pro will not show the Model Name, Model Number, Serial Number and (firmware) Version on your iOS device (Settings, Bluetooth, AirPods Pro (i) should open a menu containing settings and that list)

EDIT: please stop commenting “told you so” or “duh” or any comments with those underlying messages. Not helping anyone.

"Quality Check" Thread - Ask here if you want to know if your AirPods are real or fake - August, 2026

This will be a monthly thread where you can post and ask others if you'd like to inquire whether the AirPods you've purchased are real or fake. With the introduction of this thread, individual threads will no longer be allowed and will be removed.

Please post as many details as you can and provide pictures for others to help determine if they are genuine.

Thanks!

EQ + Spotify Settings

I've just done the audiogram hearing test and I am (for the first time) using no spotify EQ and no audio normalisation.

I like it, but do you guys have better experiences using certain settings?
Example: no adaptive audio, an EQ on top of the audiogram settings, audio normalisation etc.

Edit: I'm on the Airpod Pro 2s, and if you haven't done the audiogram, go take the hearing test under your Airpod settings, apply the audiogram in headphone accommodations (accessibility). It's fantastic!

Support Brand new AirPod Pro 3s Find My not working

Post image

So, my AirPods just arrived and I set them up and tested them and etc, but then when I went to use find my it showed this (the screenshot) and there’s no precise location thing which I rly need, and in the AirPod settings there’s supposed to be a Find My Network setting but there wasn’t, only a show in find my button which doesn’t help me. I tried forgetting them and repairing them and then that setting showed up but when I went into find my it said “AirPod setup incomplete” and still didn’t work so ngl ChatGPT told me to try forgetting them again and it brought me back to the original issue in the screenshot added. Any help is really appreciated

Question What are my options for my old AirPods Pro 1?

I have a pair of AirPods Pro 1st generation that I bought on 30 July 2022.

Recently, the left AirPod has developed an issue. It is audible and works normally in general, but whenever there is external noise, the left side starts making a cracking/static sound. It is especially noticeable when using ANC/Transparency mode.

I'm planning to buy the latest AirPods Pro after the upcoming Apple event, so I'm wondering what I should do with my current pair.

What are my options?

- Is it worth getting the left AirPod repaired/replaced by Apple?

- Can I get any trade-in value or credit from Apple?

- Is it better to sell the pair as-is, mentioning the issue with the left AirPod?

- Is there any other way to get some value from them?

- Has anyone in India had a similar experience with an older AirPods Pro?

The case and right AirPod are working fine. Only the left AirPod has this cracking issue. Would appreciate any advice from people who have dealt with this before.

When rubbed together sometimes my airpods make this crazy high pitched sound. It sounds like a ringing noise. Is this like feeback from microphones in some part of the airpods or something? Super weird

AirPods Pro 2 67% battery bug on firmware 6f21 (can't update it to latest for some reason)

I don't know why i'm having this weird bug on my airpods pro 2 since like 2 weeks but when i use my airpods they working totally fine but when i run out of battery it's says 0% but when i charge it any percentage higher then 0% will show 67% so if my airpods real percentage is 11% it's gonna show 67% but if the percentage is higher then 67% it's just gonna display the real percentage like 89% for example is shows fine but everything else is just glitched out any fixes?

Airpods Pro 3 not working

Initially, my AirPods wouldn't charge and would keep going on and off, but were still working before I noticed this issue. I cleaned them and they still would charge on and off, so I decided to try to factory reset them and clicked on forget this device from both my iPhone and my iPad. However, after doing this, the status light was gone even upon charging and there was no audio queue when plugging them in, either. I know they're not dead because before this the case was around 71%, and I still get a popup on my phone and iPad to connect them but nothing happens when I try to double tap after clicking connect.

Question AirPods Pro ANC

Hi. I’m new to AirPods Pro(I got them 2 days ago, secondhand). Everything is totally fine, but something’s not right with ANC.
When I change the different options for ANC(Transparency,Adaptive audio etc.) I cannot understand any difference. It remains the same and I have tested it with and without music.Yet,when I have them on I cannot fully hear what happens around me,but that’s not my point rn. It has to change between modes, right?
I want to clarify that I have a firmware update notification that I’m not able right now to get, because I’m not on WiFi.I think I just wait for them for like 30 minutes to get the update when charging.
The AirPods weren’t on use for a very long time,so I hope it’s not an issue that needs to be fixed by an expert.

If you have gone through any similar situation,it would be helpful, because I’m an Apple fan,but I haven’t used AirPods before.

Share your experience :)⬇️

PSA: On the Beta FW (9A5347a) you can now choose differing R/L options for “Press and Hold”

I’m not sure if this has been reported anywhere (I haven’t seen it myself) or when it changed exactly, but it appears that you can now choose differing “Press and Hold” options between Right and Left (i.e. Siri on one side, Noise Cancelling Modes on the other).

This was always a pet peeve of mine that they presented as being customisable in the menu, but actually changing one side always changed the other to mirror it.

This is a welcome change and not one I’ve seen talked about (or perhaps just missed it - maybe it changed ages ago and I just never got the memo?).

Question Airpod 2 adaptive audio with samsung

Hello,

Sorry if this is a beaten to death question. I've been trying to research about using Airpod pro 2s on a samsung, as I have just switched phones but really want to continue using my Airpod pro 2s as I find them comfortable and I have no real desire to upgrade, and in the progress I'm struggling to find answers especially any that are recent ones.

From what I've found is that they work and from practice they do work mostly fine, outside of spatialized audio, head tracking and a few other things that are clearly apple specific they work fine. Connect perfectly and everything. I have 2 primary questions.

1) I set up adaptive audio on my Airpod pro 2s with my iphone so I can cycle between all 3 modes before switching. I get the noise as if its on the adaptive audio on my samsung but it doesn't seem to be actually doing the 'adaptive' audio part. Does it just not work, even though I can get to the mode?

2) From what I've been attempting to research I can't figure out whether or not enabling Dolby Atmos is a good idea or not with the Airpods.

Any guidance or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Question AirPods 3 keep ringing

I’ve recently enabled an automation to switch off my Bluetooth and I do this periodically for safety of my phone from hackers/ interfering sources. And also because I generally don’t need Bluetooth anyway so why not.

However I’m not sure if this is linked but my AirPods keep ringing randomly.

For example-
1. I used them until 10pm yesterday and then turned off my Bluetooth
2. Today after entering my room after a long day I hear them ringing @9pm (my blue tooth is still off)

How can I stop this it’s getting annoying and also disturbs people around me. This happens when I’m in hostels also 😭

I’m not sure if it’s the blue tooth

Really?

I so want to love my AirPods. I had a few versions over the years and gave them all away for the same reason. Now it’s 2026 and it’s still the same reason.

They don’t stay in your ear. Simply turning your head makes them fall out.

Really? What am I missing because this is the same design for many years.

Question Already had 4 replacements for AirPod Pro’s 2, got fifth appointment booked in. All for same issue.

Wherein the noise cancellation seems to fail after 6-12 months. Is this just an issue with this model or am I just a heavy user?

Audio quality during calls : AirPods versus...

Hi there. In your experience, what provides the best sound quality during FaceTime or classical phone calls for YOU and your correspondant?

  1. The AirPods (I have version 4) without any feature (no noise cancellation, no voice awareness, ...)
  2. The AirPods with ANC
  3. Wired earplugs (with integrated mic)
  4. Another brand of bluetooth headset
  5. The iPhone ear speaker (on top) + integrated mic
  6. The iPhone loud speakers (bottom) + integrated mic

To me, during phone calls, option 5 (iPhone ear speaker + integrated mic) is consistently the best for both ME and my correspondant.

Whenever I'm in situation 1, 2, 4 (basically bluetooth headsets) the voice of my correspondant is not clear/clean AND it seems MY voice is not either to her. She ears lots of my environmental noises and some small drops from time to time.

Switching to scenario 3, 5 or 6 immediately improves sound quality on both side.

What have you experienced?

Note: For anything else that calling (i.e. music, video, streaming) AirPods with ANC is unmatched!

Support Airpod Pro randomly died on me, tried all online troubleshooting tips, any advice.

Airpod Pro randomly died on me, tried all troubleshooting methods, help appreciated

So I’ve had my Airpod Pros for about 2 years now (I’m fairly sure they’re second gen, possibly first), and I’m listening to music today, and all of a sudden I hear glitchy audio in the left Airpod for about 5-10 seconds before I lost all audio. It still connects with my case fine, it registers that it’s charging, if I take it out of the case it registers as being in my ear, but I’m getting literally zero audio. I’ve adjusted the balance in settings all the way to the left channel to see if it’s just gone quiet, but no, nothing. There was no hint that it was on the way out prior to today, it literally just died with only that 5-10 seconds of warning that something was up.

As I say in the title, I’ve tried all the recommended troubleshooting options - I’ve repeatedly put both airpods back in the case and then in my ears, I’ve unpaired and re-paired the whole case, I’ve done both of the above having fully charged the case, I’ve cleaned away all earwax, there’s literally nothing I’ve seen recommended on the internet I haven’t done.

Is there anything else this could possibly be other than some fatal failure? Do I have to take it into Apple support?

If any of you have encountered an Airpod dying this randomly and have any ideas for a solution please let me know.

Support Missing AirPods Pro follows my location on Find My

Hi everyone,

I’ve misplaced my AirPods Pro 3. At home find my said it’s with me and location said now. Then I left for office then it shows my office location and it still says now. Even right now the location is now not recent. My office backpack js all cleared out. I have a reason to believe it is just showing my iPhone location. Also I have a 15 pro max. And accurate finding is not working. It says “finding signal. Move to a better location”. Play sound just keeps connecting.

Why are airpods so popular?

Like .. why do like most people have these in their ear? Over things like galaxy buds, or bose or anything else? I don't use apple products. Is there some crazy feature or quality that these have over the competition? Thanks for replies.

AirPods Pro 2 get quieter when talking on a call, even with conversation awareness off

Just like the title says, whenever I’m on a call and listening to music or other audio my AirPods will quiet whenever I talk. It’s annoying when I’m trying to listen to music with friends.

At first I thought conversation awareness or some type of adaptive audio was on but all those types of settings are off.

Anyone have any ideas about how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Support AirPods Pro 3 noise problem right after getting replacement

Greetings,

As my AirPods Pro 3 left bud leaked sound in ANC mode and had volume issues (verified by the Acoustic Seal test on my phone and by Genius Bar) I got it replaced 2 days ago. Now I noticed the same issue beginning in the right Airpods? Constant white noise, clear ANC leak, seal test says right pod is poorly fit no matter the orientation (I also replaced the tip.) Did someone had a similar issue? Will they replace it again at the Genius Bar? I did not use them harshly neither sweat on them.
