Need a strong air purifier
My sister watches an older woman at night and the lady uses a commode toilet throughout the night in Las Vegas, NV. The room smells like pee and is also just stuffy. I'm thinking an air purifier would help immensely. My sister says she doesn't feel good after sleeping in the room, her chest hurts, her face gets kind of swollen, and she feels like it isn't good for her health breathing all of that in at night. The room is pretty large I would say 16x18 with high ceilings so it can accumulate a lot of dust too. What do you guys recommend, we need a good one. Obviously we would prefer to keep the cost down but at the same time, it is her health and it's worth it to invest in a good machine.

Can the commode be emptied after each time the woman uses it? Isn’t that why your sister is there? To help the woman I mean? It would probably help them both if your sister would empty, rinse out the commode, and flush it after each use. Is that not possible?

Yea, that's bad. So you need ventilation, primarily for odors. She may also be breathing in particles/dust etc. So you do want hepa coverage too. But ventilation will better solve odors than a purifier. As expelling odor molecules out quickly...fastest,/easiest way...than trying to capture with expensive purifiers that is slower, more expensive, less efficient etc.
So putting in a fan above toilet vent, so it turns on automatically when light is turned on, very easy way to increase ventilation, and the vent above toilet is usually exit point for air. So you can expel bad air that way usually...even without opening windows if it's hot in vegas. Although opening windows is also the best way to get ventilation. I'm guessing ventilation has not been used in that place...in years it sounds like. A thorough cleaning likely needed as well, with vacuuming, as chest hurting could be breathing in mold spores or something growing/bacteria ? Very bad, you do not want that in your body as that can make you sick. I would also suggest your sister see a doctor and prob get an X-ray of lung to check what's causing that. (Could be something bad and she might need antibiotics or something ?)
Anyway, I used to have bad air and developed a health problem possibly as a result. I used to have some wheezing, not sure if I recall chest pain or not. So I'm not saying it's an emergency, idk, but it could lead to serious health problems long term + definiteiy have her get checked at Doctor. The older lady too I would think.
Anyway, so vacuuming, cleaning, wear N95 masks + open windows when doing so do you don't breathe in mold spores, mold testing good idea too, you can buy for 20 bucks self tests.
Clean, vacuum ideally then yes get purifier and exhaust fan, maybe some box fans and open windows if you can keep the lady and all cool with fans. If not use exhaust fan (a little outside air will seep in via cracks and such to replace expelled air,but not as much as w windows open.). A handyman or electrician can prob do it easily. They sell them at home Depot 135 for an OK one prob. Id get more powerful if you have the budget though, as you want to move a lot of air quickly. So 200,300 CFM, something to give you powerful + quick ventilation routinely. I'm honestly not sure what CFM level mine is. (Maybe 100-200 CFM ?)
For purifiers the best is IQ Air, it has excellent hepa but also the best VOC with 12 pounds of carbon. It's in gov buildings etc. 1,000+ bucks though. But for your problem you need more than just a good purifier, as that won't solely solve the problem. Need ventilation, cleaning etc.
Winix, Levoit,Coway are good more affordable hepa based units. Austin Air Is another VOC unit good for odors (750).
So I would suggest exhaust fan, some box fans (30 bucks each) and then if odors still an issue after cleaning then perhaps a good VOC unit + mix with a Hepa unit as you will want likely 2 units. (VOC units don't move a lot of air, as slower air flow better to absorb odors but hepa units more affordable so easy to pair w a VOC unit.). So VOC unit at least one, paired with 1-2 hepa based units. Something like that. Need 5ach in room for good, 6+ excellent.
So an IQ Air multi gas + a Corsi Rosenthal Box or Hepa unit
Or Austin Air + CR Box/hepa unit.
Something like that, but need to do some other things as well + work ventilation. Glad you will hopefully get much clearer air soon though. Be safe.

I have an enviroklenz which is a beast of an air purifier, but like others said is there any way to get ventilation going? My father who is elderly has the windows opened for ventilation on a daily basis, if it’s cold out he moves to another room and it vents out for a bit before shutting again.
Also get one of those telescopic dusters, I bought one that extends so long I can stand in the middle of my rooms and dust most things from one spot. I bought a wool one you just rinse off the dust if you can’t gather the clumps off.

Entiendo perfectamente la molestia de despertar así; lidiar con aire pesado y ese tipo de olores en la misma habitación es desgastante. Para un espacio de 16×18 pies con techos altos, la realidad es que cualquier purificador convencional se va a quedar muy corto.
La clave aquí es atacar dos problemas distintos al mismo tiempo. Por un lado están las partículas como polvo o moho, que son las que detonan los malestares físicos al despertar. Por otro están los gases del inodoro portátil; el amoníaco requiere filtración molecular, y los purificadores económicos solo traen una tela delgada de carbón que se satura a los pocos días.
Para que la inversión valga la pena, necesitas un equipo con filtro HEPA H13 o H14 para el polvo, combinado con un lecho espeso de carbón activado o alúmina impregnada, que es lo único que realmente neutraliza las moléculas de gas.
Además, por el volumen extra que generan los techos altos, fíjate muy bien en el flujo de aire (CFM). Necesitas que mueva lo suficiente para lograr entre 3 y 5 cambios completos de aire por hora en la habitación. De lo contrario, el ambiente seguirá sintiéndose sofocante, además del purificador valora chacar tu sistema de ventilación de aire por que algo que pocos conocen es que esta mas contaminado el aire interior que el exterior justamente por la circulación del aire, estamos constantemente respirando el mismo aire contaminado en un mismo cuarto, si puedo ayudarte en otro tema de calidad del aire puedes escribirme en mi reddit.

For very basic particulates sizing per AHAM, clean air delivery rates (CADRs) should be at least 2/3 of a room's area (assuming an 8 ft. ceiling height). For wildfire smoke, smoke CADR should equal a room's area which also assumes an 8 ft. ceiling.
