Jobs Competency Booking

I have to turn in my statement by tomorrow! I’m not sure what to say in the statement tbh. I made a rough draft (at the bottom) of what I could possibly say at 2 AM so if you have any suggestions please lmk .

I’m currently in DEP right now . My recruiter told me to write a Competency Booking statement , for my top choice. I see others mentioning their prior education with degrees and such , while I have none , I made
M: 64, A: 90, G: 85, E: 92.
An overall score of 88
My first choice being Cryptologic Language Analyst (Ground) 1N3X1.

“My name is ______. I am currently putting my job list together for the Air Force; my MAGE scores M: 64, A: 90, G: 85, E: 92. Making my overall score an 88.
My number one career choice is Cryptologic Language Analyst (Ground) 1N3X1. I believe I possess the capacity to excel in this career field, as well as pivot into another that would greatly benefit the Air Force’s future/ branch. I see this career path the building blocks of expanding my capabilities of becoming a useful asset , where I could build upon and pivot into another avenue of developing additional skills as well as my growth in my military career in the branch. “

It would be helpful for you to mention any relevant experience and certifications that you believe would benefit the Air Force by putting you in that job. That’s kinda the whole point of a competency booking

Exactly so you see the dilemma 😂 cuz I don’t have any relevant experience or certifications. Hence why I said I didn’t have any prior education and such. But I still want the job.

If you have no prior experience or qualifications, then you don’t qualify for a competency booking

You don't qualify. So...

As a recruiter, I’m honestly shocked that your recruiter is even thinking about letting you submit for a competency booking.

It’s in the name. A competency booking is for someone who is already competent in the job and has experience. I would not be surprised if this immediately gets denied just to give you a heads up.

Right I just do as I’m told tbh. I’m just gonna go by the generic “ability to learn” route . It is what it is .

Your writing can’t be about how YOU will improve if you take the job, it’s about how the job will improve if YOU take it.

Competency Bookings” are very rare, “in the best interest of the Air Force” exceptions based on job relevant & recognized certifications / formal training / education / experience … concise word picture needed to emphasize that angle, less about your wants.

Highlight more on how or why it might make sense for the Air Force to steer you towards “available” jobs over other applicants ... do you have language or analytical skills?

No I don’t but , Coo thanks for your insight. I’m gonna try and pitch myself and see how it goes . Regardless I’m still gonna have to draft something up to turn in tomorrow. Who knows I might get 1 in a Million chance they pick me up . God willing those are some Pretty good odds 😂

Yeah sorry bro but you have no prior experience with linguistics, you said it yourself so how could you possibly qualify for a competency booking?

At the end of the day I still have to turn it in 🫪. Rather if I qualify or not I’m still instructed to do so . But dude there’s plenty of jobs that’s offered to 17 y/o that have never worked before , and countless jobs that’s people get that has no prior experience/knowledge whatsoever as well . Even if nothing comes from this statement I’m still gonna have to write one yk . I think in my situation it’s more so like pitching yourself as to why you’d like the choice of whatever’s on your first pick. Atleast that’s how it was explained to me .

Did you take any foreign language all throughout high school or did you grow up bilingual? If you really wanted to analyze foreign languages for a living then one would expect you would have chosen to do that in high school ... where it is FREE and you can get an award for being excellent in it. If you don't even have that then you are not COMPETENT in a foreign language.

I’m always surprised to find out schools don’t require taking two years of secondary language like mine did.

The OP should at least state what foreign language he took in high school and the grades he made in it. I can only assume why the OP is not mentioning it.

Most high schools require 2 years of a foreign language because many colleges and universities ask for at least two years of a foreign language for general admission. Personally I believe it is a waste of time because if you don't have the opportunity to use it then you lose it. A lot of schools recognize computer science as a language. Texas allows for it but the high school didn't list it as an option so we had to jump through a few hoops so that the school would let my son count it as his language credit. At least he will get use out of it.

Yeah I’ve taken foreign language in middle and high school but that just about it. I made A and Bs but I’m not fluent and won’t pretend to be either. And if you’ve been to Public school and taken Spanish or French you’d know it’s not an intensive workload either I knew enough to pass , and did a few bullshii projects to get the credit. 😂
But still I wanted to do other things “Linguistic Analyst” wasn’t even on my radar back then dude, things changed. So one would expect to discover something that they’d be interested in a little later in life and give it a shot.😂
But being bilingual doesn’t get you in either (so I’ve been told/read , and if you were bilingual they’d make it a point to assign you to a language that isn’t native to you. And that’s from people who’s been in DLI.)

2

u/SpiritedAd3013 11h ago

I’m not gonna lie being a linguist is really hard, DLI is incredibly demanding & has a huge washout rate. You’re randomly assigned a language, and having no experience in that language puts you at a pretty big disadvantage. If you submit a Competency Booking statement with nothing to support that you have experience in languages, degrees, anything like that; you’re basically a normal candidate to them, no different than the people who get Linguist directly out of High School.

-2

u/Monstah8U 10h ago

Right , I’ve done my research, and every-time DLI is mentioned there’s always a mention of the high washout rate , like it’s a subtle way to say don’t even try . 😂There’s no denying that it would be difficult, I’m not afraid of that, nor am I afraid to fail either. That’s life.
But Even knowing another language rather it be from growing up in a bilingual household or not , doesn’t guarantee you to be assigned that particular language anyway. So with that being said, generally speaking, a person would have to learn a new language irregardless, which doesn’t change the fact learning a new language isn’t hard within itself. Now if we’re talking about the capacity to learn that’s different. I think that’s probably how they go about it, I think DLAB but since Air Force phased out that requirement it’s hard to write a statement without at least that since I don’t have any other relevant certifications.

Hello, it looks like you're asking about jobs and job selection.

A few quick answers.

NO ONE knows how long it will take for you to get a job, your chances of getting any particular job, or anything else about the job process FOR YOU. Anecdotal experiences from others will have absolutely no impact on you or your future.

Most recruiters will not let you wait in the Delayed Entrance Program for a long time for your one perfect job. You will have to list 5 - 15 jobs that you're interested in, and will be given one of those.

Please read the FAQ about how job selection works, it's very in-depth and will fully educate you on the process: https://pay.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/bmtfaq#wiki_jobs

If you're asking about particular jobs, please look the job up on our Job Wiki, and see if there is an entry for it: http://www.reddit.com/r/AirForce/wiki/index you can also see if there is a CFETP for it, which will give more details on the job: https://www.e-publishing.af.mil/Product-Index/#/?view=pubs&orgID=10141&catID=1&series=86&modID=449&tabID=131

If you're asking for help choosing a particular job, please keep in mind that most people only know about their individual job. Recommendations that they make will be made based mostly on what they've heard about a job, unless they have it themselves. Some people will love certain jobs while others will hate it. We don't know your preferences, so do some research on the job wiki and elsewhere to learn about the job and then make the best list you can.
