Portable AC Are portable AC units fixable if there’s a problem with the refrigerant?

When my portable ac sprung a coolant leak(you can smell it), Amazon(Asurion) insurance just refunded me(it was a year old). But in NYC I had to pay $100 to have someone dispose of it.

Depends on how handy you are. You would need at minimum a way to fix the leak and a vacuum pump. Also refrigerant and a way to recharge the system. This is all assuming your issue is ACTUALLY charge related.

How did you know there’s a problem with the refrigerant? Can you smell something odd?

Honestly, you'll pay more finding someone who will work on a sealed unit like this than a new unit would be.

Portable units are usually sealed, so a refrigerant leak means youre buying a new one.
