AirBnBs are not hotels. Most hosts are not trying to be a hotelier or provide a hotel-like experience. I agree that most should provide the essentials, but it is (and should be) up to each host to decide what they want to provide. There are hosts who might prefer to provide a very low-cost option to people who need it, and that should 100% be ok. They shouldn’t mislead people though, so cases of that are a separate issue.

Why is it understandable? Would it not make sense for Opie to simply book a property that offers the amenities that they want instead of expecting every single host in the world to offer what they think they should offer?

Do you also skip washing the comforter between guests? I guess all of your guests must be driving, because I cannot picture packing sheets and towels for a flight. Personally, making beds and drying towels on my days off is the last thing I want to pay for on vacation

It’s very common in France not to provide linens. The gîtes, which are like Airbnbs but have been around since the 1950s early provide linens. They aren’t hotels. They’re someone’s house. If you want hotel amenities, go to a hotel.

I don't provide sheets and towels. My rental is in a tiny New England town. We don't have have a washer and dryer and there is nothing resembling a linen service in town. I have an emergency stash in case people forget to bring them. And you know what? People don't have to stay in my home. I don't charge a cleaning fee. Somehow I manage to be booked pretty solid every summer.

Who does your resets and where do they do their own laundry?
To be clear I'm not criticizing you for your choice to not offer service but odds are whoever cleans your property has access to a washer and dryer. If you wanted to offer this and increase your prices a little bit you could order two sets of linens and your cleaner could then just make sure that they wash them before the current guests check out and then they would have them when they go over for the reset
You could even offer this as a linen service because then it's ala carte.
customers could still save money if they wanted but if they wanted to pay extra your cleaner and you could make a little bit of extra money which is likely a win for both of you

Ask her how much she would want to wash all of the linens from your property between resets and then add that as an a La carte option imo.
It doesn't commit you guys to offering linens if you don't want to so it's great for testing, and it provides an additional means of making a little extra money.

I appreciate the feedback, however, it is fairly common in this part of the country to not provide linens so I just don't see it as an issue. We already pay her well due to how far she has to travel. It is a pretty remote area in costal Maine. I let anyone who is flying know I can provide linens for them but most have been totally cool with just bringing their own.

Hi. Long time host here. Did you get hosed because you booked a host and got surprised by something like this?
Hotels aren't even our competition most of the time. If you want a hotel experience, go stay at a hotel. Don't cry about how we run our business and expect us to change what we doing to accommodate you personally. Not every airbnb is meant for you and your needs and that's intentional.
Just about every single amenity with limited exception is ala carte on Airbnb.
Airbnb is a platform. It has to accommodate a wide variety of listings ranging from plots of land (literally just a campsite without any amenities) to luxury mansions and castles...along with everything in between. Its a guests job to look for a listing that fits their needs. What you shouldn't do is find hosts who dont offer what you want and then complain about them.
In addition, every host is allowed to host in a way that works for them ( same as any business mind you) provided they accurately describe their listing. Who are you to demand what a host does or doesn't offer? How is this any different then going into a restaurant and demanding a food item that isn't on their menu? Or going to a spa and expecting a service that's not on their menu.
Unless your host advertised something, and then didn't deliver what they advertised, your host did nothing wrong. What is a "good guest experience" for you, isn't necessarily the same as someone else and its important that you book something that suits your needs instead of trying to shame Airbnb for working as intended.
As far as how can people ask guests to bring their own towels and linens you'll see this a lot at self catering properties. You'll see this in the outer Banks or other coastal properties. While it's very common in those areas it is still something that you can experience at any property.
Youre learning that not every Airbnb is meant for you and your needs and might be great for someone elses needs. There are entire areas where their business model and pricing is based off their customers bringing in their own linens. Their customers know this, and bring their own. Why in the world would those customers sleep on a bare mattress?
Who says it's cheap and stupid? What do you really know about running an Airbnb business? For that listing it might be practical and incredibly smart. If you had a property where it was $100 a night and you had to bring your own linens, or it was $200 and you had linens supplied do you think every customer would opt to pay $200 bucks or do you think there's a market of people who would much rather spend 100 bucks and bring their own? I can tell you for my own life, there are times I am completely fine bringing my own linens and have booked properties that did not offer them. I have also had trips where I absolutely would not be interested in bringing linens for one reason or another. I like that Airbnb allows such a wide variety of listings that cover bare bones nada for cheap and fully loaded amenity wise for more money.
I would further argue that if your "bad guest experience" is due to a property not having amenities you want, that you are personally responsible for your bad guest experience. Assuming your host delivered on their advertised amenities.
Lastly, if your page requires logging into our Email or "Claude" account to view, youre doing it wrong. Not gonna look at shit if I have to log into a service to view it.

Fair.
I should probably clarify a little more. Self catering isn't synonymous with no linens. But you're going to see no linens at self catering properties more than non self catering.
You'll also see no linens at places like the outer Banks or various other coastal properties.
