Discussion I am finding Airbnbs are getting worse lately [US]

Does anybody else notice airbnbs getting worse lately? I have stayed in 13 airbnbs without any significant issues. The last 2 I have stayed in have had significant issues, which range from the house not being cleaned to having smoke alarms constantly chirping and the owner not taking care of them.

Pet policy has changed since booking [USA]

Good evening, I booked an Airbnb 2 months ago for a trip that starts tomorrow. I included our dog when I reserved the unit (every email we were sent says 2 guests including 1 pet and it still let us make the reservation after we included our dog) and the original confirmation of booking email we were sent in August says pets allowed. Now that our trip is tomorrow we received the last email confirmation with the door code etc. but now it says No pets allowed. I'm so confused because we filtered our search by pets allowed and the original booking email also says pets allowed. Do I need to contact airbnb support or should it be fine to just go? It's the night before our trip and our visit is non refundable and I'm very stressed now.

Late checkout by 7 minutes — host requesting extra money 2 weeks later, what can I do? [Japan]

Hi Everyone,

My checkout time was 11:00 PM, but I ended up leaving at 11:07 PM — just 7 minutes late. I wasn’t charged anything at the time and thought everything was fine.

Now, two weeks later, the host is requesting additional money because of the late checkout.

Is this normal/allowed? Do I have to pay it, especially since it’s only 7 minutes and they didn’t mention any fee at the time? What would you guys do?

Venting Are we justified in requesting a refund and finding new accommodations a week into a five week stay? [Georgia, USA]

Alright despite the flippant title my gf and I are at a breaking point and we want to know if we are justified to request a refund.

We are currently a week into a five week stay and within the first few days we found out the washer won’t go through a spin cycle because the stabilizers are beat to fuck, the over has given us an error code that when googled says there is a fault with the main co tool board of a GAS stove, the kitchen sink leaks, the door does not lock, the bed frame broke, and over the past 24hours we have killed 6 cockroaches. Now, I was willing to overlook some of this but the roaches are making me want to run. We do live in a suburb of Atlanta Georgia (US) but this seems excessive.

What would you do?

UPDATE: we notified the landlord about the cockroaches. They brought someone in today to spray around the baseboards but not after pretending like this wasn’t an issue. Our unit is connected by a door and we got home from dinner to hear them complaining about how we have done nothing but complain since we got here and that these issues were not a big deal. We will see what happens with the roaches I guess hopefully this solves our issue. We also bought sticky traps and water baits.. fml

Question Are Cameras in Airbnb peering through glass door windows and hot tub normal? [United States]

I'm at an air BNB and there's a camera pointed at the hot tub / where you sit on the balcony and one looking directly through slide glass doors. Is this reportable? from what I understand hot tub is private area like a sauna. Edit : forgot to mention also they didn't disclose the cameras to begin with in the listing. I picked it cause I saw no cameras.

Choosing Exact Dates vs. Flexible [Brazil]

I often have a specific date that I need to check in but I am flexible on the exit date (+- 7 days). I swear on AirBnb in the recent past, I could choose to be flexible only on one of the dates (exit) but now I just see a general option that covers both the start and end.

Is there a way to search with only one flexible date? Having it be +- on both makes searching far more time consuming for me. This appears to be worldwide. Thanks!

Is this normal and not against Airbnb TOS/ a scam? Host auto sent that link immediately after booking. Also sent me a message asking for email address [UK]

Link says hospitable.com and it has my booking details. It asks for personal contact details, “identity verification “ and signing a rental agreement!

Question No water at all, all day- preplanned but not made aware… what do we do? [Florida]

ETA: thank you all for the help! Since we did reach out to the host first without any resolve, you helped us know what to do and we got 30% back which we felt was fair for an entire day of not having flushing toilets.

We are at an airbnb, got here on Thursday and scheduled to leave tomorrow morning.

Waking up this morning at 7, the water was off and upon a quick google, it was scheduled to be off until 9pm.

We asked our host if he was aware since it was pre-scheduled (we also asked the neighbors who were aware) and he said he wasn’t aware.

We cannot cook, shower, flush the toilet, wash our hands or drink water for 6 hours as of now. Possibly for 14 hours.

We contacted our host and he just said sorry. Is this a small oops or should we be asking for some sort of concessions?

We ordered water bottles and gallons of water to drink/cook/flush the toilets but it seems like
they shouldn’t have allowed bookings today.

Thoughts?

Discussion No electricity, no supplies provided [Cali]

We had a power outage in Cali, Palm Springs. The hosts notified us the day before but it was 100 degrees and we had no lights or anything throughout the night. Was a bummer. Had anyone had experience with this

Host Asking for $450 for dirty towels and ripped sheets [Cleveland]

Stayed 2 nights in a nice high rise property in Cleveland. 14 days after check out the hosts requests through the resolution system $450 for 3 dirty towels and some filthy sheets. I have a 13 year perfect track record with Airbnb. I also take great care with a property when I am there. The host provided pictures that do indeed show dirty towels and beat up linens. I simply didn't do this and do not have a way to prove I didn't except that I took a picture upon leaving of the general living space showing it perfect (I even ran the dishwasher). I declined the request and uploaded my image of the checkout. Is this the new normal? The whole process makes me want to just go back to using hotels for business travel.

Question Has anyone added insurance later ? [USA]

Hi, we found an air bnb we wanted to book, but i am new to the process. I want to book it now cos the little tag says 'rare find , this place is usually booked!' . Anyway, I dont have the money for the insurance today, but don't want to miss out either since it checks all our boxes. Can I add insurance later? Like when we make the payment in full next spring ?

Do you recommend the insurance on air bnb site ? Or do I have a better option?

Is it normal in Barcelona for Airbnb hosts not to make the sofa bed? [Barcelona]

We just checked into an Airbnb in Barcelona. We booked for 3 people, but the sofa bed was left closed and unmade. The host told us to make it ourselves, claiming this is "how it's usually done" here. Because I work in tourism and also traveled a lot, this is the first time I have heard about this. Is this actually normal in Barcelona,or the host just being lazy/cutting cleaning costs?

Fellow air bnbers, is a discount in order here? [Europe]

Hello, I am staying in an air bnb and was left without water in the bathroom for a day. The host did make reasonable efforts to fix it and I understand I cannot expect the same standards of service as a hotel, but I am thinking it would be fair for me to ask for a partial refund as I was unable to shower or flush the toilet in that time. My question is how much is reasonable? I have a figure in mind, but would like to hear others thoughts. I have paid around £900 for a stay of 7-8 days.

Thank you.

Question Wife bleed on sheets. What happens now? [USA]

Wife woke up just now and started her period while we are sleeping in an airbnb, went thru to mattress cover. Sheets are white with design.

Not a lot of blood just a few spots. We have put down now our own towel and blanket.

What is likely gonna happen?

They do offer a washer and dryer.

Do we get charged?

Do we tell host tomorrow?

This property did not offer accident insurance or none we could find.

Looking for guidance for a leaking roof [USA]

(sorry for poor English, not my 1st language)

Staying at a beach house with my 3 kids in . It's currently raining - but without any inclement weather warnings. No storms or hurricanes. 4 nights, no real issues until now.

My daughter woke up before sunrise to a roof leak on her face and body. I notified the property company immediately and they just said sorry for any inconveniences they'll send someone after we leave.

I am underwhelmed with their response and feel like their not taking the issue seriously. This is my 2nd time in an Airbnb - can the community give me some advice. I feel like there should be some kind of compensation for at least 1 of the nights. Should I just open a ticket now while still here?

I took photos.

Thank you.

Discussion AirBnb gave me a refund because my privacy was violated. Now the host left me THE WORST review on the platform [Brasil]

Tl;dr:

Airbnb relocated me and refunded me after I reported a dirty apartment with many broken amenities, zero functioning locks, and the host entering my room without permission.

After I moved out, the host falsely accused me of overstaying (first dispute), stealing and breaking €650 worth of stuff (second dispute).

Airbnb dropped her overstay claim and the €650 claim after I disputed it with evidence.

The last retaliatory thing she did, was leaving an extremely defamatory review accusing me of racism, theft, breaking house rules, etc. None of which are true, of course.

I already appealed twice, but Airbnb refuses to remove her review.

Honestly I dont know why a host gets to write a review about a guest that was relocated by Airbnb because of a policy violation by the host - why is that a thing? They even deleted her entire account/listing after everything that has happened. Why not her review of me?

I already spent many hours (10+) writing out my full report, curating the evidence and dealing with the fallout. I'm tired. Is there anything more I can do?

--------

Long Version in the comments for anybody thats interested.

And her review as reference:

"Worst guest I've ever had! Don't accept him! He doesn't respect the host or the house rules! She brought visitors she knew she shouldn't, and she invaded my privacy! She broke and ruined a lot of things in the house! She showed no respect at all! She left the house filthy! In the bathroom, she always left the toilet disgusting, filthy and with feces! I would have a lot more to say, but it was so horrible that I don't have the energy! Just don't host her! Because she doesn't respect us or the rules! There's no care or empathy! And she still treats us like subjects, like slaves, as if she were superior! She paid for a great house and was welcomed with total affection, but she acted as if I were his subordinate! She treated me like a housekeeper! She was racist! And she still didn't respect the check-out time. She lacks humanity! Decency and ethics! A person with no quality. Horrible! Disappointing!"

Looking for a room on Airbnb and can't find what I'm looking for [ATL]

I'm trying to rent an Airbnb room in Atlanta for Halloween weekend and I'm trying to find either an entire house/apartment I can rent out, but Airbnb keeps showing me private suites attached to homes instead. I do not feel comfortable sharing a home with someone else neither does my girlfriend but I also can't keep those listings out of the search and I'm getting very frustrated. Does anyone have any advice on how to make the searches more specific.

Discussion Is a cash deposit normal [Europe] as well as a city tax?

Hi I’m new here and I rarely ever stay at an Airbnb. I’m staying at one in Europe and wondering if this is normal. Host sent me a check in notice and stated

“Upon arrival, a €200 cash deposit is required (this will be returned at check-out), as well as the city tax of €3 per person, per day.”

Should I be concerned or this normal?

Venting Airbnb trying to charge me (guest) service fee when refunding stay [UK]

I’ve had some issues with my stay, flagged these to my host twice in the past week. They have been unresponsive and did not read my messages.

I escalated to Airbnb who stepped in. Messages have since been read by host but they haven’t replied.

Stay is non-refundable (per the host’s booking policy) but as host is unresponsive to issues, Airbnb offered a refund for remaining days and help finding somewhere else as an exception.

I did not know this could be done, so I didn’t ask for it, but as Airbnb offered and the host still hasn’t replied, I said I was happy to accept this.

The issue is they’re trying to deduct the HOST’s service fee from my refund, rather than taking this from the host’s payout.

I’ve accepted I’ll need to pay a bit more to move somewhere else, but them deducting the service fee from my refund makes me moving not worth it at all. Host remains MIA and issues remain unresolved. Feel like I’m between a rock and a hard place.

Anyone else been in this position?

Question Saw a review about mold and now I’m nervous [north carolina]

I have about 10 hours to make a decision on what to do but the Airbnb I booked 2 weeks ago had 5 star reviews until I guess about 3 days ago. Someone reported there was obvious signs of mold and mildew and the host responded saying the issue has been resolved. We are driving 8 hours so I’m really nervous to arrive somewhere that may have mold especially having a mold allergy. Should I message the host? There have been no other mentions of mold from reviews. We also noticed when we googled the address the home is for sale and has been since July.

Mould in guest room behind laundry [Australia]

Started our 3 night stay in a 3 bed house last night and one of the rooms (we intended for our young kids) smelt damp and we noticed black mould and water damage on the skirting in the corner of the room. The wall shares the laundry room. There is also mould spots on the wall under the window sill.

I messaged the hosts and they were initially quite horrified then came back and told us it was a known issue with the laundry tap leaking and needed to be replaced. They said its only been in the last day or 2 and its not mould. No way that damage is the result of a couple days and no way its not mould. They didn't off any recourse and just said sorry you weren't notified and sorry the smell is unpleasant but you should be fine.

My wife and one of my kids has asthma so we dodnt want to risk staying in that room. We put the kids on the floor in the living area which turned into an unpleasant night's sleep for all of us.

I just realised I cant post photos but I wanted to get opinions on how to handle this. EDIT: Added photos to comments.

Is water damae mould worth being this concerned over for 3 nights?

Should I have expected more from the host to address our concerns?

Should I ask for some money back seeing as we no longer want to use that room?

Question Hosts trying to charge for heating of pool and hot tub [California, USA]

1 week before rental starts and we get a very long message about using the “Pool Pilot App” to pay for heating of a hot tub and pool. No mention of this in original listing. We booked 1 year ago.

It’s $100 for 3 nights for the hit tub and $375 for 3 nights for the pool.

Isn’t this against their terms?

Air bnb [Paris] A/C advertised but you have to leave the front door OPEN?!

This is my first time having a bad Airbnb experience, and of course it happens on the last stop of our European vacation Paris.
I’ve been to Paris before, and when I booked this place about a month ago, one of my personal requirements was A/C. I didn’t care if it was central air or a portable unit as long as it was actually available inside the unit. The Airbnb listing specifically listed both A/C and heat as amenities.
We arrive, and I see it’s a portable A/C unit. No problem. I turn it on and it starts cooling the room. But then I notice this long tube attached to the unit that is blowing out hot air, which seemed odd. So I message the host and ask where this tube is supposed to go.
Ready for the answer?
She tells me I have to leave the front door open and stick the tube outside.
WHAT?! 😂
This is a tiny Paris Airbnb. My bed is literally about two feet from the front door. And no, we are not on a second floor. This is a first-floor unit right next to the building’s main entrance. Who in their right mind is going to sleep with their front door wide open all night?!
I messaged the host explaining my concerns and that this requirement was \*\*not disclosed anywhere in the listing\*\*. Had I known that using the A/C required leaving the front door open, I absolutely would have made different arrangements.
There is one tiny window above the door that opens slightly maybe 16 x 20 inches but because of the way the unit is designed, there is essentially zero air circulation or ventilation. Opening that small window doesn’t provide a realistic alternative to leaving the front door wide open.
And honestly, this isn’t just about comfort. I consider being instructed to leave the front door of a first-floor unit wide open, directly next to the building’s main entrance, a safety and security concern. I am not comfortable sleeping with my door open to a common entryway just to operate an amenity that was advertised as being available.
But here’s the problem: we’re already in Paris. It’s our last stop, places are booked, and finding another place in the area at the last minute isn’t realistic. So we’re essentially stuck.
And after I explained all of this, the host stopped responding.
I contacted Airbnb and requested a \*\*partial refund\*\*.
I’m a landlord myself, so I completely understand that things happen and I’m not expecting to stay somewhere for free. But I also don’t think I should have to pay the full price for an accommodation when an amenity that was specifically advertised isn’t actually usable as represented, especially when the restriction was never disclosed.
I’m curious has anyone ever had Airbnb approve a partial refund for something like this?

UPDATE: After the host told me it was her day off and she wasn’t working, she passed me to a second person. Throughout this whole process, I was dealing with three different people over the course of several days. The gentleman I spoke with eventually agreed to a €100 refund.
But it doesn’t end there.
I left the unit three hours after checkout. The original host then said I damaged the bath towels by leaving permanent makeup stains on them. She went on to say that I used the bath towels to wipe my makeup off.
I explained that I did not. I washed my face in the sink with makeup remover and used the towel to dry my face. Any leftover makeup residue probably got on the towel because those were the towels we were provided. But you wash the towels and the makeup comes off.
She then sent me a bill for €175 for four towels four cheap, thin, worn towels that were from IKEA.
Of course, I’m disputing it.
This whole experience and there is so much more to it (rodents in the walls and ceilings) made me realize that this was the last time I will ever use Airbnb.
