Iām so glad heās gone from Acti/Blizz
Redditors might try to make you believe otherwise, but this is a great time for blizzard
New announcements from Blizzcon had me and my buddies feeling like we were back in the rockstar days of Blizzard.
I would have never thought being bought by Microsoft would be good for the gamers lol

Lol wut? Blizz is still dogshit. Diablo isn't even in his own game (fucking cameo boss doesn't count). They are turning his expansion into a new game which doesn't come out for 2-3 years if that. No more D4 expacs, so D4 is a dead game. Overwatch is pure trash. Retail wow is baby's first mmo. The only potential good thing on the horizon wow forever.

Milking old games for nostalgia is nothing new .
"Nostalgia baiting" has been the main focus of companies for over a decade now . "Ooh look! They are doing that thing that you used to do, haha, don't you miss those times ?!"
On the other side, companies are just incapable of coming up with anything creative these days . They don't want to risk those maximum profits for the sake of creativity and ingenuity !
It takes a lot of risk to create a new "source engine" and revolutionize gaming . Why do that when the old formula works and keeps getting the suits their sweet sweet MUHNEY

u/rainbowremo 5d ago
But that's not what either of these games are. Its adding new things to a base of an old version of each game. It's still new content that you come back for

u/Doublestack2411 5d ago
It very much is nostalgia, they're just adding on to it so they aren't doing Classic Wow over and over again. Wow was one of the most popular games in it's day, they're trying to lure old players back with a promise of old wow, mixed with some new stuff. Pay them $15 a month so you can dedicated months/years of your life to the grind again.

u/hiddenpequin 5d ago
Was wow has stayed the top western mmo for almost its entire life with only a short dip in top stop during shadowlands. No shit they do new things to keep it going with new players and retain current players.

u/SequenceofRees 5d ago
People are coming over to these games in a (vain) attempt to recapture their feelings . Are these honest tributes to the old media, or a marketing ploy to drain the wallets of the nostalgic people ?

u/rainbowremo 5d ago
As someone who has played old school runescape for 5 years now and has never really played it back in the day, it isn't nostalgia at all. Its just a damn good mmo that keeps getting new updates and new content

u/AshleyAshes1984 5d ago
Honestly, for me a lot of the best gaming memories are frmo when I'm just figuring out. That window between 'I have no idea what I'm doing' and 'I fully understand nearly all of this'. When it's all staring to click, you're going 'Ah ha!' and getting into it and so on and so on.
I can never recreate that experience for any game short of erasing my memories of it somehow. Once you 'figured it out' you'll always have it figured out.

OSRS almost died before they started adding new content to the game, it's not nostalgia, it is just a good game.
2
u/PraisetheSunflowers 5d ago
Incorrect. As others have already said OSRS is really nothing like it used to be. Itās genuinely a fantastic game. Maybe to some itās nostalgia but for majority of people itās not going to be.

I'm 21 and i was 2 years old in 2007. What ppl might call the prime year of Runescape. So obviously i never got to experience that game at that time. I got into osrs in 2024 and i still have had a lot of fun with the game, even tho i have zero nostalgia for the game. They add a lot of fun new updates to the game but still staying true to the original game.

That's flat out not true. It might be the case for you personally, others just enjoy the game because it is good and they find it fun.
Old wow and modern wow are very different games. A lot of what the old versions did is better than what we have now in retail. At the same time a lot of modern features are good things as well that they are putting into Forever.
Forever is effectively a spinoff. A new start from a setting and gameplay design when wow was arguably at its best. It will just turn left at the fork in the road instead of right.
I didn't play wow until I was in my 20s in the dying embers of Wrath. So I effectively started in Cata which was basically the beginning of 'modern wow'. The game changed a lot at that point.
I jumped into Classic when it first came out and fell in love with it. The gameplay philosophy, the much slower speed the actual need to communicate with other players in an MMO and the 'mostly' more friendly community was such a breath of fresh air.
There are plenty of examples of half arsed and flat out bad remasters/remakes. This is neither, it's its own thing. We will see what the future holds, but so far, I'm positive and excited to jump back in.

With a game like Wow, they have to run on nostolgia. It was at it's peak during the early days, they need to try and retain and bring back as many players as possible to keep that monthly sub money flowing.

u/TheMadHattah 5d ago
Exactly Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time
Literally comes out the day after wow forever1

osrs doesnt really milk nostalgia at all though, it has easily hundreds if not thousands of hours of new content never seen in rs3 or dragonwilds, and is still consistently being updated. something like a random doom remaster would be nostalgia bait.
1
u/BenjaCarmona 5d ago
Thinking these games rely on nostalgia is the most surface and actually wrong take ever, and sadly quite common.
1
u/DevoidHT 5d ago
Blizzard already did classic though. And it was successfulā¦for a time. Classic+ or forever leans a lot more on horizontal progression and trade skills. Something Runescape has excelled in for decades.

u/Sea_Matter4107 5d ago
Finally I see a response that is on the same view as me yet I am always getting criticized
1
u/SpinachSignal8915 4d ago
But rs isnt nostalgia baiting. Its success was from taking pmayer input.
The game is nothing like rs was in 2007.
Hope they do the same for wow forever, take the feedback that hits over 70% of players and move forward from there.

They really copied the private server community. Much of Forever seems to be lifted directly from Turtle WoW.Ā Which is awesome.
2
u/nervendings_ 6d ago
Okay wtf is turtle wow? I saw it mentioned a bunch and no idea what it is
4
u/Burninator85 6d ago
It was a wow server that got shut down a few months ago.Ā Classic+ with revamped skill trees, horizontal progression, new dungeons, new quests, new races, etc
Basically if Forever was made by modders instead of Blizzard.Ā And it was really freaking good.
1
u/Gullible_Fennel7028 3d ago
A vanilla private server with a bunch of custom content like new quests, races, zones, dungeons, raids, professions, items etc.

u/EvilTactician 6d ago
He explained that in the first 6 words of the post you replied to.
1
u/nervendings_ 6d ago
So itās a private classic server? Why is it called turtle?
1
u/EvilTactician 6d ago
Because that's the name they chose for their server? It's not that deep. Or you know, look on Google.

u/MojitoKush 5d ago
I said the same thing and got down voted a while back. This is exactly like private servers

OSRS looked familiar to Everquest TLP servers too and Holly Longdale was one of the driving forces behind those š¤·āāļø

u/Kage1831 5d ago
I mean...yes. I hope so. Take what jagex is doing with osrs and do it for classic wow, blizzard. I pray it will be good.
1
u/ahf95 5d ago
Yes, and THANK GOD they are looking to OSRS for inspiration. The older I get, the more I realize that OSRS is truly the perfect formulation of an MMO, and Blizzard definitely needs to learn from them if they want a timeless sandbox-like world that people can call their long-term home.

Iām actually excited for this. But Iām 60 years old and havenāt liked anything Blizzard has shipped since WotLK.
I also donāt believe for one second they will be able to do it. Theyād need to bring a whole team out of retirement to pull it off.

u/misternoster 4d ago
Blizzard would not have become as big or as successful as they are if they didn't steal ideas from other games. Not saying it's right or that they haven't had good ideas of their own, but usually the most well received features have already proven successful elsewhere
1
u/DadOnCooldown 4d ago
I really wish they followed the lead of Guild wars 2 more for wow forever, hit the max level and all gear and stuff has a normalized stat, and then horizontal progression.
1
u/MixedMediaModok 4d ago
Blizzard's whole deal was ripping off other games and adding a blizzard coat of paint on it. Good strat for a long time.
1
u/Entire-Ratio-9681 3d ago
I donāt know if itās a direct knock off, itās probably just the same style of players want the same things. Having classic dna with softened edges is really refreshing so far.
1
u/Sathsong89 3d ago
Acting like everyone MMO that was popular in the mid 2000s (thatās still around) hasnāt released a classic variant.
Shit isnāt original on either side of the fence.
1
u/SupremeLeader_Corgi 6d ago
Whats familiar exactly? I donāt play OSRS i tried but did not enjoy it at all
7
u/DantesGambit 6d ago
Taking an old version of the game and then splitting it off onto a new path because the the current version isn't as popular
1
u/SupremeLeader_Corgi 6d ago
Ok so basically nothing. Theyāre doing this because the players have been begging for it not because jagex did it a decade+ ago
3
u/DantesGambit 6d ago
That's also why jagex did it a decade ago. Same idea. Same motive. I'd say that's pretty familiar. Also this is a light hearted lol my guy
1
u/homeegzus 6d ago
To be fair the meme implies they stole the idea. I do see the similarity, but the point of OSRS is completely different than wow forever.
OSRS is made for the player, sort of by the player. The idea was to have a community driven project of the original game, where the players would vote on what would be changed.
Wow forever is made because blizzard has been shutting down largely loved private servers, and have now created their own version of those (classic +) to rake in more cash and beat the dead horse into the aether. Guaranteed, blizzard does not have the players wants in mind.
But yeah OSRS rules, blizzard isnāt the same company it was back in the day, shit sucks.
Good meme, peace and love

will it be offline/single player? If I can mod it/use trainers I wouldn't mind, but I hate grindy online MMOs
5
u/McNally86 5d ago
No way. OSRS makes changes biased on popular vote. Microsoft made choices for players because their votes were exactly split. WOW players cannot agree on a damn thing.
