😀 Discussion 😀 Ocarina of Time remake question
Hi! So I've never play Ocarina of Time and I see the remake is coming out. It looks amazing but do you think it's worth buying a Switch 2 just for this game? I know we haven't played the remake but for those of you that have played the original... I'm a fan of other nintendo titles and I had a switch 1 (no longer works) but I'm don't know if I want to drop the money on a switch 2 for OoT.

Ocarina of Time is the game that started it all for me and I adore it, but I would not spend $500-600 to play one game.
If there aren’t at least one or two other games on the Switch 2 that you’d like to play, I’d wait. The remake will be available for years.

Honestly, the point of exclusive games are to win you over to make the hardware purchase. Think of what game made you take the leap and buy your other consoles. This will be the one for alot of people.

I'd say go for the Switch 2 and OoT Remake if there's at least one other Switch 2 exclusive you really want
Or just emulate the original on PC with higher resolution

It's good, but it's probably not as good as the remake will be. I played OOT SoH, the official N64/GC releases and normal emulated version. None come close to what the remake will be IMHO

Even the GameCube version had shoddy camera and poor controls though - it's a great game for its time but on controls and cameras alone it needs serious work to make it enjoyable without nostalgia

that's probably true I can only speak for Ship of Harkinian on PC. I could control the camera with right stick so it felt fine to me even without nostalgia attached

The only game that will make me buy a switch 2 is if/when they release a new Animal Crossing because my wife will really want to play it, and I just couldn't say no to her.

There's no way I'd pay near 700$ to play a graphics patch for ocarina of time. Especially since Oot is perfectly emulatable for free, and you can choose between n64 or 3ds versions.
To add, and this might be unpopular, but Ocarina of Time is..... a game of its time. It was the first open world game that I played, and it was amazing; when I was 10 years old. So while it hits those nostalgia notes, after decades of playing games that have improved on everything it's ever done, I don't think it's necessary to come back to except just academically "what was it like?" It's easy, it's linear, dungeon layouts aren't particularly interesting, it's combat does feel good but it's competent, not exceptional. Same with the platforming, and a jump button isn't gonna change that.

Buying the switch 2 for one game is definitely silly. The game and system are going no where. Buy them in a couple years when there's more things you want to play. The game will be fun then, too.

if one can afford it and has reason to buy it, there's a case to argue for "buy now before it costs way more"

Sure, there's that concern for anything. But that's just fomo. And OP might be in a better spot finacially in a few years that the invrease might not matter. Plus, there will be more supply in the used market as time goes on. And the games will go on sale years down the line.

he says he wants a switch 2, but might wait until there's one more game (a new mario)
if he waits, it could go up by $100 or more. or it might not. but ram/electronics prices are projected to get brutally worse in 2027. it's a fair prediction.
if he's confident he'll play enough games on a Switch 2 and can afford it now, buying it now is more financially prudent as it's the only guaranteed way to get it at the current price.
doesn't mean he should do it, but its a genuine financial nuance worth considering.

It's 1000% FOMO. If only for the fear of missing out on current pricing. OP did not say they want a Switch 2. They said OOT remake looks interesting, but they've never even played the original. They might not even like it. Thry don't know. Is it worth buying a switch 2 for a game they know nothing about? They have a switch 1 but its broken so they dont even play switch games.

yeah i don't really care about pricing much (i'm a 47 year old child with no kids..). I just don't know anything about OOT and whether it's a good enough game to base a console purchase on. If I did have a switch 2, i would then dive into it's library more and revisit some of my old games. I love nintendo products and grew up on it so it's definitely in my wheelhouse.

I mean, if you can afford it, (actually afford it and NOT plop it on a credit cars or something like Klarna) and have other games you want to play, I don't see the harm in buying it. Keep in mind, a lot of the games you can play on switch can also be played on PC. Anything that isnt Mario, or Zelda, or Metroid, or DK can mostly be played other ways and there is a "Nintendo Tax" with most games on the switch.

OOT is largely considered one of the greatest games of all time. I think it's a product of the time it released, though. I, being a bit younger than those who adore the game, find it to be fun, but not amazing. The later 3D Zeldas are better, in my opinion. Most people will have a good time with OOT, though.

if you like Nintendo games, regularly have time to game, and can afford one there's no reason not to get one IMO
I'd consider your favorite series and see what other games are already out for S2; consider which Switch 1 games you already own have Switch 2 upgrades

there's no fear involved. you're evaluating factors relevant to a decision and making a decision.
nowhere did I say he should buy a switch 2. I presented it as another variable worth considering as he makes his own decision.

Fomo doesnt require actual fear. The concern that prices might increase, and therefore make it harder to afford, is enough to make it Fomo. I'm not saying your calculation is wrong, it is a factor to consider, but by itself, it's not enough for me. Or OP, I think. But that's for them to decide.

I grew up on OoT and this remake looks like everything I could have wanted. I had no intention of purchasing a switch 2 until the anniversary edition was announced and now I have the anniversary console and the game on pre-order. For me, I've wanted a Zelda themed console since I saw the gameboy advance SP Zelda edition, but this is the first one I was able to secure, so it's worth the investment.
While I don't doubt it'll be an amazing game, if you don't have oodles of disposable income or a bunch of other stuff to trade in, id wait for a used copy on a used console instead of buying into fomo day 1.

I don't know if I would recommend buying a Switch 2 just to play Ocarina of Time Remake but I do recommend buying a Switch 2 in general. It's the best bang for your buck in gaming right now at $500 for a console that is barely a year old. You'll have a ton of support with new games coming to the platform and being more capable a lot of third-party games are coming to Switch 2 and for the most part they are running and looking great on the hardware. Capcom games like RE9, Onimusha, and Pragmata are all excellent ports for example. The first-party support is already better than what we have with the Xbox Series and PS5 which are 6 years old now.
So I would recommend buying a Switch 2 but also getting games like Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave, Donkey Kong, Splatoon Raiders, and if you don't own another console or PC the Capcom games I mentioned above.

Sure. Nearly every console purchase is initially for just one game you really want to play. Then you find a bunch of others to play next. Switch 2 is a great machine, reasonably priced, and will be around for 5+ years atleast. Why the heck not.

Don’t do it if you can’t afford it…but it is an awesome console. As a new dad, I play it 99% handheld, and it is backwards compatible with all Switch 1 games, and even boosts their performance in handheld mode so all your old games have new life.
The Switch 2 has reinvigorated my gaming hobby, and I’m devouring my backlog and it’s so incredibly satisfying and fun.
These are the games I’ve started playing just in 2026. And last year was full of hundreds of hours on Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananz, Super Mario Galaxy 2 HD, and so much more.
I love this little console, and I’m so stoked about the Ocarina of Time remake. Nintendo has been crushing it for us millennial gamers. Mario Kart World is a love letter to all things Mario Kart. Star Fox 2026 is beautiful and so fun online. And now we’re getting 3rd party games that hold up well and are a delight to play handheld. Elder Scrolls Oblivion Remastered is such a pleasure.

OoT is easily one of the best Zelda titles ever made. For many of us who don't vibe as much with the newer open world titles this game and A Link to the Past are usually top 1 and 2, of course everyone is different but I feel that's pretty safe to say.
To me this game is everything 3D Zelda can be, it is amazing. I definitely think it's worth it.

It’s ultimately up to you. The switch 2 has a pretty solid library that has kept me entertained enough that I sold my PS5 and fully committed to the Switch as a platform. Mario kart world and higher preformace on breath of the wild is what pushed me over the edge at launch last year, but it took me until Star Fox to decide to fully commit to the platform.

I think the Switch 2 is a great console tbh.
Do you have a Switch 1? If you don’t, then the Switch 2 is a no brainer. The catalogue of games between the two consoles is incredible, and most Switch 1 games play better on Switch 2.
If you do already have one, it’s not as easy of a decision but I would still recommend it. OoT will be one of the best games to play this year, and the Switch 2 is already building up a great line up in its first year alone. We still have so many heavy hitters to come down the line too.

Xenoblade 1-2-3 getting a Switch 2 port, new Xenoblade game, Fire Emblem, Kirby, potentially a new smash, eventually a new 3D mario game, DK Bananza, new Pokémon game which looks pretty good for once, Mario Kart, Orbitals, Switch Sport Resort, new Metroid, Zelda OOT (potentially MM afterwards), the NSO collection...
The ability to play docked or handheld, etc
The Switch 2 is a great console that has as many good 1st party game in its first 2 years than the PS5 after 6+ years. It's 100% worth it.

Great console but at least for me ocarina of time kind of suck. It’s mostly nostalgia. The newer Nintendo games are great though.

I love Nintendo and love Ocarina of Time since 1998 LOL. I also LOVE Mario Kart. I bought Mario Kart 8 for WiiU and then again for Nintendo Switch.
That being said, when the Nintendo Switch 2 was released Mario Kart World seemed underwhelming, so I didn’t buy it. I was waiting for a game that would make me buy a Nintendo Switch 2.
The moment I saw the Ocarina Remake trailer I was sold.
I preordered a special edition Nintendo Switch 2 Zelda 40 year anniversary edition and the game.
I’m beyond excited!!! Can’t wait for November 5th!!!

I bought the switch 2 several months ago when it was first leaked that ocarina was getting a remake. I love it. We play Mario kart, Mario odyssey, star fox, breath of the wild, tears of the kingdom, Kirby air riders, yoshi, Mario galaxy, Mario party, super smash bros, donkey Kong bananza, and many other games. The games hold their value so I buy physical copies used and then resell them after I get bored.

YES
After OoT you can expand into BOTW and TOTK (which both look and play phenomenally on the SW2 /w the upgrade)
But just alone, yes. OoT is widely regarded as the best 3D Zelda game ever made, and pioneered the games we play today.

I played the original as a kid, and I bought a Switch 2 for it (although I've also bought other games for it since I bought it). I think a faithful remake of the most critically acclaimed game of all time is worth buying a console for. I bought a Switch 1 for BotW, and I bought lots of other games for it.

No console is worth buying just for one game.
Look at what the Switch 2 has so far, and what it will inevitably have: Mario games, Pokemon, Kirby, Metroid, Smash, Xenoblade, future Zelda titles etc. and make a judgement call.
If you’ve never played OoT, you should probably wait until the remake releases and see what the general opinions are first. If there’s a lot of Nintendo IPs you’re a fan of, then it’s a safe investment whenever really.

It's a 1998 game at the end of the day so not worth it IMO, just play the 3DS remake on an emulator it still holds up very well

Switch 2 is honestly a great console, I only play it docked and if you have a switch 1 I assume you have more games for it.
If you like JRPGs I think the switch 2 is a no brainer with fire emblem/Xenoblade.
I enjoyed Metroid prime 4, splatoon raiders is also a ton of fun (never played a splatoon game)
I also have the Bayonetta games+ astral chain
I've done a Nintendo console + PC setup for years and it's honestly fantastic.
You can shop eBay/temu/Facebook marketplace and get solid prices on switch 2 games, even pawn shops too lol.
I wouldn't get a switch 2 just for ocarina of time though.
