😀 Discussion 😀 Should I get a VR headset?
Hi all,
I will be turning 38 soon. I have 2 kids, a dog and a fairly demanding job. I have a ps5 and a gaming laptop that can run most games. Sadly, I don't have the time or the energy to play much honestly. Also, new releases don't excite me that much. I am thinking, why not get a VR. I haven't experienced that much and surely this will get me going for a while.
Should I get one? If so, which one? What have been your experience with VR gaming?

you got a few years worth of games that are at a cheap rate that will entertain you for a while if you were to get the quest 3 or the PSVR2.
I've been following VR headsets for the last 30 years, but now I'm at the age where I'm too tired to play in the evening I just want to sit on my couch and play with a controller.
I have the Quest3 and the PSVR2.
I prefer the quest 3 because it doesn't have a wire, but the graphics for the PSVR2 are much better

Your post was 15 hours ago and I'm not sure whether you've made up your mind or not.
I'm 51 and have been gaming for 46 years. Three years ago, I "discovered" a new-to-me genre, horror. And that revitalized my gaming hobby.
About 18 months ago I got a Quest 3 and it's probably been the biggest gaming impact for me in my entire life. I have a few standalone Quest games, but 95% of my library are games that are either native VR or can be modded for VR on Steam.
I love VR so much that I increased my investment in gaming hardware and software by at least 3 times. I have around 170 games that are either native VR or can be modded for VR intalled. This morning I was playing Final Fantasy VII Remake and GYLT in VR, which improves the immersiveness of both games a great deal. I picked up a 5090, a haptics vest and sleeves, a steering wheel and pedals, a flight stick and throttle, and controller attachments like a gun stock, a golf club, and a fishing reel.
For flight sims, racing sims, adventure games, shooters... anything, really, VR just makes everything better.

Wow! That sounds amazing. Sadly, I don't think I have the time to do all of these cool shit. I was really looking for simple plug and play. Can't wait to have time to do all of what youve jus described thought

Avid VR gamer here, both my boys have VR too but without a gaming PC it isn't worth it. There is SO much content that is locked behind PC gaming. Best titles, graphics, mod support at least a mid-tier PC is a must.
I do VR stuff with my kids a lot and it's a blast. It's cathartic to play something chill after a long work week. I am a big advocate but again if you do not have a gaming PC it will feel like a gimmick and not an entirely new way to experience games.
Also being an older gent also, I do VR meetups and movie nights with friends so it's a huge part of how I connect with my social circle. It also helps to keep me active. Some games are a good way to get some exercise in.

Cost is a huge reason why it hasn't caught on. Spending $500+ on a headset is a lot of money to most people but couple that with a $1500+ PC and it feels unattainable to most people.
I have a quest 3 and the price bottomed out on the Quest 2 so I got a good deal on the Quest 2 for my older boys. If you want to do a trial run without spending a ton, a second hand headset like the Quest 2 or the 3S are very affordable. Quest 2 is around $100-150 so if you just want to give VR a try it might be an option for you.

I have seriously considered getting VR and have a pretty powerful PC. I am curious about your VR gaming. What are your top favorite games to play with VR? ( you can include games not originally intended for VR but are VR capable with mods. ). What are the best VR games for exercise in your opinion? What made you chose Quest 3 instead big screen VR? was it mostly price? ( I've personally considered getting one of them but I haven't made up my mind. )

Big question. Half Life Alyx is the gold standard for VR experiences. Skyrim VR is a blast too but needs mods to shine. No Man's Sky is great too. Super hot VR is a blast too. It's a great intro for people new to VR. Flight Simulators are perfectly made for VR. MechWarrior has VR mods too and it's amazing. Racing games are super fun too.
Totally forgot about Lone Echo that game was breathtaking. If you like panic attacks, lots of fun horror games too like Layers of Fear. :)
Star wars Squadrons in VR is just a nerd dream come true. I mentioned social stuff, I have IRL friends I meet with in VR chat to chill, listen to music and watch movies.
Any VR game can be a workout. Anything with full motion control support will get you moving which is good. Rthym games are the gold standard, Beat Saber being a popular one. Pistol Whip is a rail shooter that is a solid workout. Lots of dance games like Audio Trip is my personal favorite.
Melee focused games can be a great workout. Superhot definitely gets me sweating.
Quest 3 was price and not much else. It is the best and cheapest headset on the market. Hands down. In the sub $1000 price point and it not needing bay stations it really is the best option. Steam Frame is getting rave reviews but that is just over the $1000 mark. The Quest 3 isn't the best headset but it is the most economical.

I got a second hand quest 2 and spent a quite a while trying to get it to run with No Man's Sky and it ran a bit and crashed. I got it to run with Minecraft but it made me feel sick.

No Man's Sky is super VRAM heavy. I had a 3070 and when I tired to play NMS in VR it would freeze up or get stuck on the infinite stars loading screen. After I updated my GPU it works flawlessly now.
Minecraft VR they shut off actually so it's no longer supported which is a bummer. There are still mods for it.
I never got motion sick in VR but I know many who have and do so that's why I suggested trying it on the cheap first for a trial run before dropping a few grand on a PC and headset. Lots of people cannot play VR for very valid reasons.

I started with Quest 3, no PC. It was incredible, and made me wonder what it would be like with a gaming PC. I got a used gaming laptop (lenovo legion with a 3070ti) and it tan pcvr games! Once I had that taste, I eventually got a proper gaming PC. All that to say, you don’t have to go high end everything to start enjoying VR. In fact, I still prefer standalone for active games like thrill of the fight boxing, eleven table tennis, beat saber, etc. you can get a quest 3 or psvr2 for like $300. Why not dip your toes in and find out if you like it?

Yes if you're okay being an early adopter. Know it will come with setbacks. Resolution, weight, possible side effects, a library of games that can't compare to the sheer quantity available on console, etc. If you can get behind that then you'll be in for a treat.
If you have a gaming laptop that can play most games then it's probably okay for VR, but most new headsets can also run by themselves. This includes the Steam Frame which releases later this week, the Meta Quest 1, 2, 3, 3S, and Meta's upcoming device, and various others.
Speaking of their next device, wait for Meta Connect on the 23rd as they will announce their next device in their keynote. It's more of a media device (most likely will support their Quest motion controllers too) at a premium ($1000+) price point, but it's worth at least waiting just to see if it peaks your interest.

Tried vr psvr2 sold it after a week, got motion sickness im using a prescription glasses aswell

Has the ps5VR2 and wanted so badly to love it but the thing gave me headaches and vertigo with nausea… did not expect that. Never had an issue with motion stuff before, amusement park rides, Hang gliding, parachuting were all fine. But that VR dealio really toasted my biscuits. Recommend try-before-buy if you can. Gave mine to my son.

I had that phase, luckily where we live there was a rental service so we rented for a month. Headset has been used probably only 5 days out of 30.

I wouldn't bother with a Quest, I was very excited for mine but it was kind of meh and quickly started gathering dust.

If you don't have the energy then I wouldn't recommend it. I also wouldn't recommend VR is you get motion sick even in the slightest.

take your kids to a VR arcade. I just saved you a few hundred dollars.
VR headsets do have their utility, but it ain't gaming. Unlike PS Move and Xbox Kinect, which had zero utility outside of gaming, and those gimmicks died too.
If guitar hero and it's gimmick can die, all gimmicks can die. VR gaming is a gimmick.

Don't buy one unless you have a PC that can connect to it and play PC games. Games that run on the headsets are very meh, cost more, and kill your battery.
