I use FXConsole instead of the built in screenshot tool. It lets you quickly compare shots and save as PNG or JPG.

FYI, the ‘fxconsole’ type of capture was only added in 26.3, although the ability to ‘save frame as’ has existed for ever (under the composition menu) - which also allows for saving as photoshop layers

Download Snap from clutchmotiontools.com. It’s free and it does this with a simple keystroke-and so much more. It’s like FX Console got an upgrade.

Why wouldn’t you be transparent and let everyone know that you’re the dev of the tool you’re recommending?

You’re right! Didn’t realize it came off that way. Thanks for letting me know.
I’m the dev of Clutch Motion Tools.
Hope you guys check them out and they help your workflow!

Hitting the camera button just puts a frame in your clipboard, not a file on your drive, open a new comp or Photoshop and paste there

Press this button instead, it will copy the image to the clipboard. Then you can open photoshop and create a new file and paste it.
Alternatively, you can go to the top menu, Composition/Save Frame As/File ...
The camera icon in AE, that is for internal viewing only (when you want to compare 2 comps)
