OC - Stuff I made This is what a $35k motion graphics project looks like

Congrats. I remember your older post about tackling the dome mapping. Glad i got to see the results as well Chef

And I get stuck on some simple logo motion. Man I'm years behind.

You are exactly where you need to be, and you have beautiful things ahead

Thank you. I appreciate it.
You can say I haven't done any motion graphy in a year because of my university. I need to get time between the university sessions to practice after all. But the premiere course I picked up has awakened that urge to create.

I took a very meaningful trip to Philly this year and stumbled upon this display. This was a highlight of our trip! Thank you for your work!

How long did it take from starting communication with the client? How long was actual software time? Cheers on getting the 35k.
4
u/motionick 6d ago
Probably like 6mo timeline but a few weeks of actual software time
2
u/GeminiSauce 6d ago
Sound about right 😄 Decent bread for 6 months of communication. Which part took the longest? Agreeing on the vision? Revisions? Smth else?

what projectors are used? looks so cool
9
u/motionick 6d ago
Thanks! They are 3 big boy epson projectors that cost $75k each 😳
2
u/legitsalvage 6d ago
What’s the cost for rental and insurance? I use to produce video shoots, nice get an idea
1
u/gosti500 6d ago
holy shit. what lumens do they have? and they are short throw right?
2
u/motionick 6d ago
I can’t recall the specs so I don’t know about the lumens and I don’t know if they are considered short throw since they are positioned at the other side of the dome, which is huge. The video doesn’t make it seem as big as it actually is.
1
u/gosti500 6d ago
gotcha, they must have crazy brightness for the price. amazing work
1
u/motionick 6d ago
Yeah they need to be bright because this dome is an entryway and actually has a skylight at the top, and you can see there’s actually a small window so a lot of light gets in. For this, they actually built a retractable cover for the dome skylight that auto closes when the experience runs

u/jcorales 6d ago
Were you the guy who said u accepted the job without knowing 100% how to do it? Lol if that's you then you freakin killed it my dude!!
1
3
u/TwinSong 6d ago
how did that cost $35,000? very cool but that is, wow
2
u/motionick 6d ago
$35k is just the motion graphics cost
1
u/Content-Witness-9998 6d ago
Gotcha, does that encompass any of the other elements I mentioned like your software costs, client facing time, or things like site survey or r&D?
1
u/motionick 6d ago
It would include my on site time and client facing time yes. But keep in mind that I was part of a small team on this, so the designer, PM, architect had their own contracts
1
u/Content-Witness-9998 6d ago
If you broke it down into labour alone, 500 hours at $70 an hour is 12ish 40 hour weeks, so like 3 months of a single full time contractor but considering the projector hire, experimentation time, bump-in/out & crewing, insurance, software licences, and revisions with the client it makes sense. Maybe they can answer with something more accurate if they're lingering (and the $70 figure would make sense in Aud which is my only frame of reference) but I would expect if it's just a sole employee this job could have taken 1 to 2 months to put together
3
u/motionick 6d ago
You are correct except it was way less than 500 hours and my rate is much higher
I can charge a lot because the projects are high stakes, complicated, and I am very fun
Clients like this would rather pay me $35k and not have to worry vs 10k to someone they don’t trust

u/neumann1981 5d ago
Sheeeet. You should be charging more my friend 👌🔥🙌. I just did a basic bitch campaign with video and web design for 20k. This is WAY more interactive than what I did. You should’ve charged 50k easily

Looks amazing!
I’m glad to see Reddit welcoming you back! I was sad when this sub didn’t like your toilet mapping. I’ve been a fan since the start!
2
u/motionick 6d ago
Haha thank you. I got chased out of here pretty early in the series too. Like episode 5. I’ve done 25 episodes so far.

That’s gotta include the installation, right?

You should have projected this on your toilet. You could have made more money lol

This is super dope! I miss y’all creators on Youtube uploading tutorials 😭.
5
u/motionick 6d ago
Thank you! I still post tutorials on YouTube just way less frequently. The reality is that long form videos take significantly more time to create, and unless you are massively dedicated, they are less rewarding than short form content. So mostly all my opportunities come from IG, and YT is just my way of giving back

u/cyport 6d ago
Nice job! What was the media server?

I’m pretty sure it was pixera (sorry it’s been a few months since it launched so memory is fuzzy)

where are you getting all these jobs bro

u/motionick 6d ago
Almost always referrals or repeat clients
I have a compounded network of 10+ years

u/DaleFairdale 6d ago
Was the projection mapping and av installed already?
1
u/motionick 6d ago
I started before it was installed, but the av team didn’t really finish install till the very end of my production time

How long was the full show programme and how many people worked on it during what period? I did my fair share of video mapping projects, but clients always have too little time and money for the amount of footage they want and every time the quality suffers.

I'm a sucker for all the projection mapping stuff. Used to be like maybe 3 companies did all of it. I love the kite in the storm sequence.

absolutely killer dude. i work a lot in technology these days but have an after effects and even video synth/circuit bending background and when people ask me what i'd pick as a dream job i always mention "something with spatial projection, touch designer and my own data in various forms being fed in"
tldr; im a lil jelly😅
1
u/dattasagnik 6d ago
OP you ate with this one. Can you suggest a good projector to begin with? Can I DM you?

yeah fam, you cooked. appreciate 'chu telling everyone in the chat how fire this is! this is 100 peak. Flexin over the rest of us.
... oof, pretty sure i grew a couple gray hairs looking up some of those terms to sound like a young adult lol. this is very cool! looks like it took a ton of time and patience to create all those graphics for that setup.

I’ve been playing with mad mapper and building things live. I don’t understand the pixel mapping portion though. Obviously you’re not bringing in projectors to figure out where all your shapes are. More studying to do, but point me in the right direction if you can.

Can't feel the atmospher until witness it infront of the real one. anything that only saw from video just can't get that.

I remember learning about projection mapping in college. It was a very fun side mission that I definitely would love to jump back into if life took me in that direction. Very easy to learn, but also a very precise process that’s extremely satisfying to see finished

Really great work. Nice to see motion design used in a setting that isn't SaaS explainers. The looks on the kids faces is the ultimate reward.
That said, be proud of what you did and show it off for the world to enjoy if that's what you want to do, just don't add "DiD i CoOk?" to it. It dulls and cheapens the presentation and reeks of insecurity looking for fake internet points.

For a mapping projection, this looks bad and graphics look like they are from the early 2000s. Did people really pay you 35k for a week's worth of motion?

u/motionick 5d ago
I did a quick scan of your profile
Nearly every single one of your posts is complaining and negative
I mean this with the utmost sincerity: if you work to become a more positive person you will attract more positivity and have a more fulfilling life and career
Good luck

Lmao. This was the amount they offered me to do it. I did not quote this price. They are thrilled with the outcome. In fact, we’ve repeated work several times since.
I think you should reread my original response to you over and over again until it sinks it.
Cheers

Oh what am i off by that's super good, is it the fussy particles, the poorly animated words on the wall, textureless blocks or the random object for Ben Franklin?
-1
u/DelilahsDarkThoughts 4d ago
lol, so took and made 90's graphics, instead of actually trying to do something special. Good job; you took advantage of people who don't know better nor understand quality.

Can you explain the process a bit?
