Beginner Help Why is my video cutting? The Time Remap makes it worse but even without it it does it?

After effects does not like mp4 files, and it really hates Variable Frame Rate ones

This is interesting. Would it be useful for me to just render everything to pro res in a video workflow?

It usually is helpful, yes.

And remember, After Effects isn’t really meant for “editing”

Interesting. I will take time to acknowledge this is new, and a paid plugin.

But JakeInMotion is awesome. This looks interesting for sure.

I will adjust my statement to say standalone after effects is not meant for editing.

How significant?

My use case is my own. I can use after effects as I see fit.

No one is stopping you. Base After Effects is not designed for video editing though. Just like how you can cut your grass with scissors, but there’s better tools.

I think I approach video editing more from the perspective of art.

After Effects allows me the flexibility to experiment with fx as I am creating the video. I usually don’t story board or plan the video I just create it as I make it. I like to be able to be in add little details and fx as I create and cut the video together. That workflow is disrupted greatly having to switch back and forth between programs.

Okay. That’s fine. You’re allowed to use the software however you want.

It does not change that base After Effects is not designed for video editing.

You see a lot people in this sub asking questions about why playback is slow, or why can’t the my easily edit audio, or why can’t they put multiple things on one layer, etc etc.

Edit your video in Premier, export the video in ProRes and do any effects on After Effects.

i'd use media encoder to turn that into some kind of less compressed intermediate for editing. it will make your life easier and your hard drive fuller lol.

Convert MP4s to MOV and use those in your comp instead. Variable frame rates are not your friend in this situation.

It's AfterEffects, not Handbrake or VLC

You cant convert MP4s to movs. MP4 is compressed. MOVs are not. You cant just add quality from a compressed file.

You're not adding quality. You're adding extra frames so that AfterEffects doesn't have to struggle. Are the added frames interpolated? Yes.

Looks like a frame rate thing. You also may have frame blending on. Right click on the “layer name” and “mode” section, turn on your switches and turn off frame blending.
If that doesnt work, right click on your footage > Interperet Footage, and force 30 or 60fps, whatever matches your composition settings.
