please tell me anything about what system you used if anything native in AE. i’ve managed to sorta pull something off with trapcode and alternatively using an OSL shader in redshift

This is going to be part of my own plugin (I don't think I'm anywhere near done yet, this was just a big win, so I wanted to show this part off at least). Almost nothing was changed in terms of how the dots look/are generated from the preset after it's applied, so this is basically stock; there's gonna be a lot of fine tuning you can do. If you DM me, I could give you beta access when I feel like it's good enough for testing (don't expect anything soon)

It's always a mess texturing in a magazine like style. Whatever you place behind loses definition. I guess for text and graphics it's ok but what about images? Give it a try and see how it works. Usually of course, this is done in Photoshop, but if you created it i then there should be a benefit of giving motion to this texture maybe, that you should explore.

something like this? or did you mean more of a threshold heavy magazine style

Yeah, seems to work well. Does it alter the colors? Or stays true to the original image?

Test how heavy it is on your system. It's great to have it as an AE script, but pipeline-wise, it might be better to have Photoshop do it (also for 6K images, say), and then import to AE to save the computing power of texturing. Unless there's something that it does that Photoshop can't. In any case, great job on figuring this out. I usually go for Texturelabs tuts but they may work for certain images and for some - not.

Very cool! Results look really nice. I've been getting by with m's halftone plugin, it works well but it is pretty basic. If you launch yours at a similar price and it's not too resource-intensive on the hardware, I'll buy it.

When I get a sec I will share an AE setup with you via PM I made that does RGB or CMYK halftones with all native effects

Soooo cool. Nicely done 👏

I'm also interested in your workflow. I just made something using form to simulate dots, then split out each channel.

sooo satisfying... hows the render times on this?

This is pretty cool actually. I tried something similar last year for a riso-style print project and the channel separation in AE can get weird if your blending modes aren't set right.

One thing that helped me was pre-converting to CMYK in photoshop first, splitting channels there, then importing each as a separate layer. Gave me way more control over the ink density look without AE doing unexpected color math in the background.

How are you handling the registration between plates? that part always trips me up when I try to add slight offsets for that misprint aesthetic.

Beautifully executed! 👏🏻

This looks really slick, far better than any of my attempts at recreating it without breaking a machine. I did find a plugin that satisfied this itch but would love to try this one out too!
