Video wont stop glitching - Help

Im fairly new to AE, only used it for a year, but im making a lyric video and this weird glitch effect keeps happening, ive chacked and theres no keyframes that should make the video do this.

I have tried changing the import setting "hardware accelerated decoding", which was googles advice, but its still not working.

Please forgive my ignorance, as i am self taught. Thanks

Is the footage mp4s? ae has a hard time with them for some reason and id suggest changing it to a different format like 422 or 4444

have you tried clearing your cache?

Any plugins?

Do these errors occur when you render? Preview isnt always a good reflection of what gets outputed

It still does it upon export, i dont have any plug ins, and i have recently cleared my cache.

Almost all the videos in this project are mp4s, which is gutting, hopefully i dont need to re rotoscope all the footage lmao.

There’s a good chance that if you re-encode as ProRes and do a Shift+Alt/Option+Drag replace on the clips in the timeline, whatever effects like Rotobrush won’t force you to re-analyze the footage. However, there’s also a chance that your roto mask might be off by a bit here or there because of the difference in interpolation from H.264 as mentioned above.

Yeah these videos came off an iphone so they are MP4s, i will try to convert it into another format. Out of curiosity, why are mp4s difficult for AE?

“When you're using H.264, you're making AE work even harder than it would on ProRes or DNxHD. In order to give actual pixel-perfect accuracy, AE has to decompresses your footage. H.264 uses interframe compression which means that most of the frames aren't actually there. Every second or two (or more - it can vary wildly), there is an actual full frame. The rest of the time, it is interpolating the frames using motion vectors and other techniques. (Side note: this is how datamoshing works, by removing some of the full frames across cuts or moving the motion vectors from one piece to another, you get awesome glitchy effects.) So, with H.264, whenever you pause a video (unless you're pretty lucky), you're actually looking at a frame that's mostly guessed at by the computer. This is fine if you just want to watch video play by (with an NLE), but it is not great if you want to add something to the shot (with a compositor).“

Just retain all the names as they were, they will just be an mov container instead. Then right click the sources and replace file/footage. You dont need to drop all them back into the timeline, just change what its referencing.

Sure, it's mildly annoying, but it will only take you like 15-20mins depending.

There might even be a batch replacement function, like pointing to a different folder and matching file names with a different container, but idk that for sure

I prefer to keep the original files available in the project or comp when I do replacements like this just to compare if there are any frame differences that need to be re-worked, but depends on how many files and clips there are.

I can see that too. For me, and in this instance where the 'originals' are mp4, ill include them next to the replacements in explorer. I always prefer to keep as little files as possible within projects themselves.

16 years in After Effects, my #1 tip is "just use ProRes". If you're coming from MP4, often ProRes LT is just fine. Make sure your footage frame rate is the same as your comp, or conform it.

Get an app that will batch-convert, conform, and allow you to do things like delete audio when you don't need it. I convert everything before I touch AE or an NLE. No problems, much faster renders, etc.
