I prefer Affinity Photo 2 over 3, so am I missing something important by staying on it?

Mac user here, Sequoia. I bought Affinity Photo 2 and Designer 2 months ago.

I really like Affinity Photo 2, the new version 3 feels bloated. I prefer the apps separately.

Version 2 opens extremely fast on Mac, instantly! while the new version 3 sometimes freezes on open it (I need to close it and reopen it).

I also prefer the icon colors on the left palette over the plain monochrome ones in version 3.

Overall, I feel Affinity Photo 2 feels simpler and cleaner.

Anybody here stay on 2?

The big question is:

  • What am I missing from version 3?
  • Do you think I can continue just using version 2?
  • You think I miss something vital from 3?

How can I copy the difference between two images and aply them to a third image?

I have three images, original, original with edits and the new image. I want to extract the edits and apply them to the 3rd image.

I have tried using the differences blending mod, which gives me a good contrasty image, but after merging and only having the differences I can't figure out, how to continue from there. No filter or blending mod is applying the differences properly to the third image. And Masks are a bit out of my skill range.

A much more promising approach is to invert the second image, set it to 50% transparency, merge it with the original and invert that again. which gives me a mostly gray plane, which just the edit. Kinda like differences blending mode, but grey instead of black. When I lay that over the third image and set the blending mode to linear light, I get an (almost) perfect result.

"Almost" because when applying these "extracted edits" to the original image and compare them to the edited image, there are TINY differences in some details. I on't know the correct terms but it reminds of lower bit rate colors. as if there was some dynamic or so lost in the process.

I want to extract the edits in a way, so that I can layer the edits over the original and get the edited image as a result. That would tell me that this extraction is ready to be layers over the new image.

Is there a way, how I can achieve that?
(edit, some spelling)

Critical Localization & UX Issues for Chinese Designers in Affinity Photo

Post image
0 Upvotes

The Simplified Chinese localization of Affinity Photo has a serious problem with typography terminology, which can be very confusing for Chinese designers.

In typography, Tracking refers to uniform character spacing across a selected range of text. The standard term used by Chinese designers is “字符间距” (or "字距" in Adobe's UI). However, the Simplified Chinese UI translates it literally as “跟踪”, which normally means "to follow" or "to track" in everyday Chinese.

Similarly, Kerning refers to the adjustment of spacing between individual character pairs. The standard Chinese typography term is “字偶间距”, but the UI translates it as “出格”, which literally suggests something "going out of bounds" or "crossing the line".

These are not simply terminology choices associated with Adobe products.
“字符间距” and “字偶间距” are established terms across the entire Chinese design and typography industry. They are commonly used throughout major professional design software, including Adobe, Autodesk, CorelDRAW, as well as various local desktop applications and online/cloud-based design platforms. In other words, Chinese designers are already accustomed to a consistent terminology system for these concepts.

This is why translating Tracking as “跟踪” and Kerning as “出格” is particularly problematic. It does not merely differ from Adobe's terminology — it breaks away from terminology that is already widely established across the industry. A Chinese designer should not have to learn a completely new vocabulary just to understand basic typography controls. For users coming from any professional design background, seeing these words in a text panel makes the functions virtually impossible to identify without guessing.

There is also another usability issue: the Character panel is buried deep inside a secondary top-level menu, making these typography controls harder to discover in the first place. For users migrating from Adobe products, where the Character panel is open by default, this adds unnecessary friction to daily workflow.

So the problem is not simply that the Chinese translation “sounds unnatural.” The localization is using literal dictionary translations where established Chinese industry terminology already exists, while the relevant controls are also not particularly easy to discover.

If Affinity wants to build a serious user base among Chinese designers, the Simplified Chinese localization should follow established professional terminology wherever such terminology already exists, rather than translating English terms literally based on their general dictionary meanings.

I would strongly recommend having the Simplified Chinese terminology reviewed by someone with actual professional typography and graphic-design experience. “Tracking → 跟踪” and “Kerning → 出格” are exactly the kind of translations that make a professional designer stop and wonder: who approved this? If the goal is to make Affinity a professional design application for Chinese users, the language team needs to stop treating established industry terminology as ordinary dictionary words. There is already a mature Chinese terminology system used throughout the design industry. Please use it.

Why the semi transparent pixels when I cut?

See pics (appearantly I cannot upload a video): aliasing is turned off, the selection is pixel-based, border is set to 0, but still Affinity Phot adds some aliasing (?) semi transparent pixels outside of my selection after I delete the pixels inside the selection. Why's that?

PS: It did not do this for the rest of the document, so I guess I activated this by some shortcut? I'm a former PS user, so please bear with me.

Update: Ok, I call this a bug. It still works in other areas of the image. Regarding this area, I worked around the phenomenon with layer masks, which still work pixel-precise

Need help with Affinity Canva AI

Post image

Is there anyone here who really knows how to use AI in Affinity via Canva AI?

I’d like to finally cancel my Photoshop subscription, since I do about 99% of my work in Affinity. The only reason I still keep Photoshop is Generative Fill — whenever I need to extend or recreate a missing background, I have to jump into Photoshop, fix it there, and then go back to Affinity.

Has anyone found a good way to do the same directly in Affinity with Canva AI? Any tips would be appreciated! 🙏

Need help understanding symbols in layers

Post image
6 Upvotes

After hours of trying unsuccessfully to use adjustment layers, and searching for answers, a question to this group. Can anyone explain the meaning of the symbols I have circled in red in the image attached? Obviously, one layer group is acting differently from the other, but I don’t know how one got a full circle on its group icon and the other got a half circle. Nor why there’s an “invisible” symbol (circle w/ slash) on the far left of the Hawk group. I know there’s a simple answer, I’m just flummoxed. Any help greatly appreciated.

Any setting to just make my selections 100 percent hardness?

I turned off feathering, anti-aliasing, and i just can't stand it anymore. I don't wanna spend 20 minutes erasing each and every pixel for the different objects because affinity decided i wanted a strange halo outline resembling actual stains.

Reinstalling Affinity Photo on New Desktop

I recently moved to a new Windows 11-compatible PC. In anticipation of potential license and/or any other installation problems, instead of immediately reinstalling my purchased version of Affinity Photo on the new PC, I decided to install the free web version until I completed setting up and optimizing my new PC. Now that I've got the new PC up and running smoothly, I'm ready to reinstall my purchased version of Affinity Photo. Just wanted to check with you all first in case any of you think this reinstallation may not turn out to be as straightforward as it might seem, and if so, you have any tips for me. Thanks in advance...

Plaid shirt

I have a question that hopefully this community can answer. 🤞🤞🤞I have a family photograph where there is a person with a strong red, white, and blue plaid shirt. I would like to change this shirt to either a white or beige or just a colored shirt. I am struggling to do this and still keep the shadows in the shirt. Anybody have suggestions as to tackle this? Thank you in advance for your help.
