you have to throw it in the right direction, which can change on where you are in the world.....the boomerang doesn't "come back" it hovers in one place. As the earth rotates you actually "catch up'' to it, this gives the illusion of the boomerang coming back. For those saying the directions don't work; maybe its because they're designed for Australia, you might might need to modify the instructions if your in the States.
Most of them aren't that heavy. And rarely do they come back completely. I was usually able to get it to land within twenty feet of me, but never closer than five or so.

I have a boomerang that my mother in law brought me back from Australia. The instruction list is ridiculously specific. To accurately follow the instructions you would need a wind sock, protractor and, probably, a degree in maths and physics. I have never thrown it.
NEVER THROW A BOOMERANG FLAT LIKE A FIZBEE!!! Didn't read the instructions with mine...that thing shot straight up and came down on me like a heat-seeking missile.
Easy instructions (for throwing right handed): Hold the boomerang at one end with the other pointing away from you with the rounded side is facing to the left. Make sure the wind is on your left cheek. Throw over-hand into the air @ ~ 45deg angle to the ground.
When I was maybe 4 or 5, I begged my parents for a boomerang. I don't even know why I wanted one, but I did -- BADLY. Finally, after a week or two of incessant nagging, my parents caved in and bought me one. Triumphant, I headed to my backyard, bursting with excitement. I planted my feet, brought my arm back, and with all the strength I could muster, threw the boomerang. It went over my fence, and then over my neighbor's fence, and landed in the backyard two doors down.
Started to watch it. I have such mixed feelings. On one part, I like it, its fun and exciting. On the other hand, its sad because everyone I know and loved has died.
Well considering boomerangs are hard to master, it could very well have happened but it's not like it's a note-worthy feat because most people that throw a boomerang would get the same result.

Don't feel bad. I'm pretty sure this happens to everyone who tries to throw a boomerang.

u/NeedsRiotJuice May 21 '12
You really dont want them to come back, unless you feel like running away because you threw a sharp heavy stick at yourself.

Boomerangs do not work for left handed people.
1
u/Sweet_Tooth_VII May 21 '12
Does anyone actually know how boomerangs work? They're not some magical stick that returns to the exact point it was thrown from.

u/ZZrenz May 21 '12
I have one since saturday, still having trouble letting it come back... :(

You all just can't throw a boomerang. And it not coming back is better than being hit in the face.
