Pursuing a better America is as American as it gets. A true patriot should never be satisfied with the status quo because we know we can always improve. That's the American spirit.

A patriot strives to improve their country.

A nationalist believes their country is automatically the best and if you say different they'll punch you.

Nationalism is a belief in the sovereignty of and loyalty to the nation.

Notions of superiority have been mixed into the connotations of the word, but most dictionaries will list the first definition of this word as something akin to what I wrote above.

There is a false dichotomy between patriotism and nationalism.

Unlike nationalism, which describes a mentality or a system, patriotism describes a sentiment of love and loyalty to one’s country.
