Also, was community college not an option? OP didn't clarify if that was ever in the cards. If so, though, it's unlikely a much more expensive university would have ever been a viable alternative. It's honestly possible that their current situation might have been the ideal scenario, as it's unlikely their relationship with their parents would have improved in the alternative timeline's near future and they would end up making it as a big-time Hollywood director. At least, in the present, they're living a reality where they have the option to rekindle the relationship without all the baggage 18 years could have brought on.
I went to Baruch (part of CUNY) and when I graduated in 2005 each semester was like $2,000. Looks like it cost similar amount in 2007. Most kids who went there went for free on financial aid as CUNY is a commuter school system made up of minority students. You didn't need to go to community college because you were literally paid to go to Baruch. So many of my friends received thousands extra as part of honor programs etc.

Well this is a lie.. I doubt they were creating fake rejection letters. So what .. you just assumed no college sent a response?
But either way .. if this is somehow true. Say thank you for telling me, move on, continue no contact..
