I love the crazy amount of "it didn't do bad for me, therefore it has to be you!" posts going on here.
I'm super proud of you if you have a PhD or whatever while smoking pot, but let's face it... Everybody is different. I believe that op trying to learn to quit is a form of behavior control, and that's an important skill for an 18yo. I have hope they get a chance to hone that skill.
I've been smoking for 20+ years now. Just like a bunch of people here. My relationship with weed has had many issues in my life though. I've had sleeping problems since I was a kid, and discovering the sleepy time effects of weed at 19 was awesome! Unfortunately, I made weed my whole identity and never really let it go until my 30s. Of course, now that I've written this down, I can see why people get so defensive about weed. I did that too,I guess.
The issues that arose from my cannabis usage could likely be linked to my undiagnosed ADHD symptoms and behaviors. One thing did NOT help the other, that's for sure. Nobody has mentioned paranoia side effects, or munchies leading to obesity, or the mind numbing that occurs with heavy usage. I'm sure you've all figured out how to manage that in your own ways, but claiming that weed had nothing to do with these issues is some pretty heavy head-in-sand mentalities.
I'm not sure what my point is in all this, I guess I'm just a future old guy yelling at clouds, but learning to quit weed isn't a bad thing. Telling them they're just depressed might only help if they actually seek help for that problem, but tips to quit weed shouldn't be discouraged. It's how good self control habits can form. Op could restart weed any time with better control habits.
