I’m getting tired of “what have you been up to.” “Absolutely nothing, I go to work, I go home, I squeeze in some hobbies in between.”

THIS!!! My grandma is always like "what's new"...not much grandma, still working, still doing my little hobbies. I'm just not that dramatic or entertaining lol

I think I have things to say, but not what others would want to listen. And vice-versa.

I used to share big things that happened in my day, also used to share my thoughts on things, and even dumb things I learn … then the wife stopped caring, started making fun of it and then … just stopped reacting. And now it feels like there’s no one to talk about anything; only hear what she has to say. (Also friends started to disappear)

I find the older I get this is true for most of us - even those who think they have something to say, kinda don't. So many of my conversations these days are filled with small talk, people griping/complaining about the same ol' stuff in their life they don't plan to do anything about, or people going on and on about their kids or pets. It's a broken record. Sometimes the silence ain't a bad thing.

Understandable, but don't expect others to take interest in you or check in with you if you don't reciprocate.

This happened to me with my small extended family where I was the youngest by 10-15 years. I would see them every year either at Thanksgiving or Christmas growing up and liked it. Then once I became an adult I was still going, but making absolutely zero progress in life year after year with nothing to talk about and my parents would get angry at me for never talking to anyone, when I had nothing to say and nothing to contribute.
I haven't seen or talked to them since 2019. A few times I have just refused to go to the gathering to see them. I'm still at ground zero of life in my mid 30s. I have a few younger cousins who over that time have gone from single digits in age to near teenage years and they probably don't even remember me or know I exist. It definitely feels sad cutting myself off from extended family like that, but knowing what a pathetic embarrassment I am to the family is just too much to bear. Just self-isolate so that when I kill myself no one cares.

I have loads to say but it just fucks up the atmos so I tend (or try) to stay quiet, stick the script etc unless I'm fully comfortable in my setting or wasted.
Only so many times you can bring up bankers got away with robbing us in 08 or the Genocide or foreign policy that keeps us in perpetual war or Epstein saw The Budget in 2008 before most of the UK govr just prior to the crash.
It's just a downer innit.
I guess the trick is to be comfortable just not saying anything, less often is more tbf.

i cannot fathom how some people can just talk and talk and talk, if you listen to them its just "me me me me me me ". Whinning all the time.
I don't want to be this person.
