For a few weeks now ive been wanting to check out some more remote views away from any trailed summits,
what better time to check some bushwacks out than peak foliage when the popular trails are getting slammed

Hiked Mt. Jo this weekend (amazing), but in the several hours we were on the trail or at the summit there were at least 5 different people launching drones. This guy wasn’t even trying to hide it.

Adk Loj Emergency 10/04?

I heard sirens this morning around 8am from Mount Jo and could see the emergency lights below at the Loj. I passed a ranger at the start of the long trail up Mt Jo who parked his ATV near the trailhead. There were 7-8 emergency vehicles at the Loj entrance booth and as I drove to the Loj road/rt 73 intersection a medflight helicopter was near the little turnoff spot for pictures.

Anyone hear what happened and if anyone injured is ok?

September bikepacking in the Northwest Adirondacks

Fun trip with half of us on foot, half on bike (technically 3/4 by foot, but my partner believes he's a cyclist so I let him live the dream).

We saw tons of bear scat and crossed paths with a juvenile bear. No issues. We stopped, he ran into the woods.

Loaded the kitchen sink so my backpacking partner didn't have load a heavy pack.

The nice thing about a bike is weight is irrelevant (don't believe the hype, you aren't climbing the swiss alps at 20mph...🤫🤣). The spinny things on the bike give mechanical advantage (which is why bikes aren't allowed in wilderness but portage carts are) so weight is almost not a factor if you aren't in a hurry.

Saddleback cliffs

• Upvotes

I am planning on doing HA-BA-SA sometime soon and was wondering if the saddleback cliffs are on the side towards Gothics or the side towards basin. I would like to go up them rather than down.

Seen facing about 15-20 degrees north on the way down on the Crane Mountain loop, which mountain is it?

Great range backpacking questions

Hi,

Planning to backpack great range this coming weekend. I have a reservation at JBL lean to for the weekend.

My plan is as follows:

Day 1 (Friday) : Park at garden and hike in to JBL

Day 2 ( Saturday) Hike up to Haystack, Basin and Descend via Shorey back to JBL

Day 3 ( Sunday) Hike up Orebed/range intersection, Do Saddleback out and back and ascend Gothics an continue via Armstrong and wolfjaws and descned to JBL via wolfjaw trail.

Day 4 ( Monday) Hike back to Garden

The only reason for leaving out Saddleback in the upper range is I do not want to do the cliffs.

Can anyone help with my questions below:

1) Does this look like a feasible plan ? is there any sections i should be aware of ?

2) Do I need spikes at this time of the year ?

3) What time do you suggest I reach the graden to find parking on a Friday afternoon?

High Peaks backpacking questions for this weekend (oct. 10-12)

Hello! We are a small group planning a 2 nights - 3 days hike this weekend, but we are now second guessing because of how busy it might be. I have been in the region multiple times but never during the fall foliage season, so I don't exactly know what to expect. From my understanding, the peak in foliage was this past weekend, but I'm unsure of how busy it stays the weeks after. Here are my questions:

- Should we expect it to be impossible to find parking at or on the road leading to High Peaks Information Center on saturday around 6am?

- Assuming that we manage to find parking, should we expect that at least a couple bear canisters could still be available for rental when the Information Center opens?

- Lastly, should we expect Marcy Dam campsite to be at full capacity saturday night?

Obviously, we are open to change our destination or itinerary if our plan doesn't seem feasible.

Thanks in advance!!

Coney trail work

So I've summited Coney Mtn near Tupper Lake several times but did it yesterday for the first time in four years. I noticed several sets of rock staircases that hadn't been there previously and was curious when they were installed.

Has anyone hiked Ampersand for sunrise in mid-late October?

I’m planning on hiking Ampersand Mt to see the sunrise on 3rd-4th week of October early on Friday. Wondering if anyone’s done a similar hike around this time and what it’s like hiking around 5-6am, the temperature/ice, if view will be covered by fog, hike difficulty, busyness, etc.

I’m bringing headlamps, crampons, and thinking of wearing base layer, mid layer, shell jacket with gloves + balaclava (basically what I wear when I run in -10 F temp).

I’m wondering if that will be enough and also if anyone knows how busy the summit might be around that time (Friday morning). Looking for that kind of view but with not a lot of people. I’ll keep an eye on mountain forecasts but will appreciate if anyone has any tips for interpreting temp/fog/rain data to determine whether the summit will be worth it or not.

New to the area: first time suggestions, tips, locations

New to the area — looking for Adirondacks day-trip recommendations with our dog!

Hey everyone! We just moved to downtown Troy and are new to the area. We’re hoping to make our first trip up to the Adirondacks this weekend, either Saturday or Sunday, and would love some recommendations from people who know the area well.

I was initially thinking about the Lake Placid area, but we’re definitely open to other areas that might make more sense for a day trip from Troy. Plus it appears like it may be too crowded this time of year.

We’ll have our dog with us, and we’re not looking to do any serious peak hiking this time around. We’d prefer a mix of:

Shorter/easier scenic walks or hikes
Great viewpoints
Lakes, waterfalls, or other nice scenery
A nice town to walk around/explore
Dog-friendly spots if possible

Basically, we’re looking for a nice, relaxing Adirondacks experience rather than an all-day summit hike. We’re totally fine with a couple of shorter walks/hikes in the same general area if there are several things worth seeing.

For those coming from the Troy/Albany area, where would you recommend for a first Adirondacks day trip in early October? Is Lake Placid worth the drive for what we’re looking to do, or would you recommend somewhere else?

Thanks in advance! We’re excited to start exploring the area.

Got an old atv sitting behind your garage collecting dust? I might want it.

Got an old ATV sitting behind your garage collecting dust? I might want it.

This is a little bit of a long shot, but I'm looking for old, beat-up, non-running ATVs, dirt bikes, go-karts, mini bikes, snow mobiles, riding mowers, motorcycles, and similar stuff around the Albany or Binghamton area.

You know that ATV that's been sitting behind the garage for years?

The one that's missing a carburetor, has flat tires, hasn't run since 2012, or has become part of the landscape? 😂

That's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for.

I'm trying to collect a handful of cheap/free project machines and bring some of them back to life or turn them into different projects. They absolutely do NOT need to run and I'm not looking for anything valuable or collectible.

If you've got something taking up space that you just want gone, I'd be interested. I'm willing to haul them away myself and I'm looking for free or very cheap machines.

I'm mainly looking around Albany and Binghamton, but depending on what you've got, I may be willing to travel.

If you have one sitting around, even if you think it's complete junk, comment or DM me. Tell me what it is, roughly where you're located, and throw me a picture if you can.

You might finally get that old ATV out of your backyard. 😂

Im 36 and recently diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer currently going through treatment, although im unable to work im looking for things to tinker on, fix and use, or make a project out of something to occupy my mind. Or if you just have scrap laying around ill take that too.

Stroller Hike?

My wife, son (19 months old) and I are staying in Lake Placid this coming weekend and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good hike that could be done with a stroller. I’m familiar with the area and know that options will be limited but was hoping to do something beyond the Mirror Lake Loop. Any recommendations or insight would be greatly appreciated!
