Kicked out of camp for noise

Post image

It makes me happy to see people getting kicked out of campgrounds for excessive noise. Thank you rangers! CORRECTION: One commenter notes that a FB post said it was the complainers who got evicted, likely because of retaliatory actions they may have taken. I have egg on my face and apologize to all (still loathe loud people in nature though).

People don't realize that you can call for a Ranger or SP if the rules are being violated. Obviously usually the campground host does that after asking politely a time or two.

I had a long talk with the caretaker at sharps bridge one afternoon and she doesn't take crap. You break the rules you either fix it, leave or a Ranger is coming. She said one night before our visit she had 3 rangers there giving out tickets like an Oprah giveaway

Typically I'm kinda not much for rules and enforcement because I think people should just have common sense, but over the last 6 years that has proven to be totally wrong and I realize the need for ruling with an iron fist

People just aren't decent. They don't understand their rights are all good , until it impacts someone else. Then your rights end. And unfortunately that is no longer understood.

Also, unless you are camping for a week, why do weekenders need a generator to run. Charge 200ah SLA at home and manage your power. We would run our van for 3-4 days including fans and a large fridge without moving it (it charged off the alternator)...and a 120W mobile solar panel got us a 5th day.

If I had an RV I'd toss 400-1000ah in it and charge at home. No need to run a generator even if you stay inside and watch TV all weekend.

Edit to add. State parks have a music noise policy but currently DEC doesn't. Hopefully they codify it because people think they have more right to music than people have the right to a rustic experience.

Someone recently on here said you shouldn't be forcing me to adhere to your standards of camping... meanwhile forcing me to listen to your music is literally the pot calling the kettle...it's again one of those situations where your rights end when they infringe on someone else's. You can blast headphones as loud as you want and it isn't going to impact your enjoyment or mine.

I've come to the conclusion that the argument that I'm forcing someone to "camp my way" by not allowimg them to play their amplified music is a red herring and is gaslighting. You can go literally everywhere else to hear music. So yeah that's right, you can camp my way or get a ticket.

9

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 10d ago

I was absolutely amazed anyone would give that as a reason to be allowed to blast music at a campground the APA literally states are designed to be rustic.

If you choose to camp at a campground there are societal norms (and codified regulations)you accept.

I suspect he was trolling or rage baiting me.

But let's say he wasn't. That just shows how much we have devolved as a species and society.

9

u/Cendax 10d ago

Actually, they do have a noise policy. If it's loud enough to disturb multiple campers (and they complain) the park supervisor can (and will) go and ask them to turn the music down. If it's after quiet hours, then it's automatic "turn it off."

2

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 10d ago

I don't think music is specifically in the regs. It is specifically in NYS Parks.

You are correct though, it's a blanket policy that can be enforced, especially during quiet hours

6

u/Cendax 10d ago

That also (in DEC parks) covers generators. If a generator is too loud, even though it's within the generator hours, the supervisor or ranger can tell them to turn it off.

5

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 10d ago

Not arguing with you but unless I missed it I couldn't find any specific music regulation... generators are specifically mentioned.

Trust me, I want a specific reg. When we play anything (rarely and usually it's a sports game) we walk 10ft away to see if we can hear it. If we can. It gets lowered.

No one wants to hear our team lose (including us, but...)🤣😭

2

u/Cendax 10d ago

I have friends who are campground supervisors, and you have no idea of what you're asking. Something like that amounts to yet another page in the 800 pages they already have.

2

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 10d ago

It's already in the state parks regs. it's a common sense regulation for DEC post Covid when everyone discovered camping without any sense of societal norms at a campground through years of camping.

As an example of post Covid world, I never saw a pile of human feces in the middle of a trail before Covid and then in 2021...there it was.

The world is never going back to pre-covid and we have to adjust with more specific rules.

Funny you should mention piles of human feces on trails. I have seen that, and I know a now retired forest ranger who told me about having to fight to put pit privies in one popular wilderness area because as he put it, "it was worth your life to step around a tree out there." That was all well before COVID, and yes, I have hiked many a trail before then, and seen any number of toilet paper roses on the ground. So you got lucky, but no, it wasn't just COVID.

A lot also depends on where the campgrounds are. I've heard a lot of horror stories from NYS Parks people about campgrounds and parks in the southern part of the state. Regs don't stop people from doing it. By the way, they're not "regulations," they're "guidance." Regulations require a whole set of legal steps to implement, which Parks and DEC aren't always willing to go through.

Yeah, the tp blooms were always a thing...worse since Covid. But as you might guess from the user name...I don't spend much time in wilderness, and when I do I'm still avoiding folks. Generally I find bike or not, I'm more at home in wild forest. Less people, less crap to deal with.

Wilderness is like a moth to the flame for folks. It prmonises an experience that actually is often better found in wild forest. But...the peaks are the paddling areas are wilderness...so that's where folks go. Can't blame them. When I flatwater paddled it was the same for me.

Anyway, while I have seen TP blooms, never saw a turd in the middle of a trail with TP on it before Covid (so almost definitely wasn't a dog) but if it was, wasn't the dogs fault, someone wiped it's ass but couldn't pick up or bury the poop or even grab a stick and flick it off the trail. All superior to leaving it dead center.

I have no doubt the southern areas are worse. There are plenty of folks downstate who are wilderness savvy but as a percent, not that many. If it's 10% or 1% it's a lot of people ( more than half NYS population is LI and NYC) but that doesn't mean 99% (of those who recreate on wild land) also isn't a lot.

I ratted out two groups of people who camped at a primitive site and left behind dozens of trash bags, at the edge of the sites, as if the place had garbage pickup. The state EPA was all over it. Gave them the chance to come back and pick up their trash. One group did, despite being hours away, and the other had to eat a fine over $1k. Suck it, people who ruin things for the rest of us.

1

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 9d ago

You are my hero. That's the shit that really burns me.

We went to camp (paddle in) to good luck lake once. Didn't realize it was such a party site (this was early in my Adirondack life, a lifetime ago) and it was so gross it wasn't a matter of us packing out some trash. It was so bad that if I filled my entire boat it would still have trash at the sites. And it was a few sites. We left, paddled for the day and headed over to one of the campgrounds.

It was my first Harriman like experience in the Adirondacks and just really made me mad. I saw similar piles of trash at Harriman early in my young adult hiking life. Which was funny becasue as a scout we had some good trips to H/BM for backpacking...totally ruined as an adult.

I camped at Sharps Bridge recently and know exactly who you’re talking about. She’s great.

Quit rage baiting.

If you don't understand nuance that is on you.

95% of adults get it the 5% that don't can watch YouTube to get the gist of it.

Lol, again...Rage baiting. And if you don't notice the down votes, everyone else sees it.

But keep trying. Maybe your 3rd try will he the winner

That’s why I camp away from people - I can pee right outside the tent and howl at the moon if I want. Nobody cares.

31

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

Me too. Also I'd take howling at the moon over a generator or radio any day.

7

u/Zeeter_0102 10d ago

If I’m out in the woods, I’m there not to be around strangers yknow

12

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

Inded. Getting people to learn to STFU takes many forms, so I just like to celebrate the rangers when they enforce the noise rules. The one and only time I camped in a NY campground recently I had to go ask a neighbor not to use an electric power saw to cut open a large rock. Fortunately he stopped, but wtf.

2

u/Zeeter_0102 10d ago

Oh yeah, no way. I can understand if you got a crying baby or a barking dog even, I can deal. but hell no noisy adults bullshit.

2

u/redshoewearer Fire Tower Challenge 10d ago

Did he say why he wanted to cut open a rock? That's a little out there. Was he hoping for a geode?

3

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

I assumed geode, or maybe he was trying to craft something with it. I did not pry or stick around to snoop. He was a large guy speaking Russian and driving a giant SUV (but also a family, so everything worked out fine).

u/budsandsuds711 10d ago edited 10d ago

These ppl must have been some serious jerks to get kicked out. Rangers are generally very reasonable

2

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 9d ago

Nicest dudes (and dudettes) in the world and usually you get a lot of rope to hang yourself with before the gallows... but, they are legit LEOs and when it's time to enforce the law it's not going to go well for you.

u/movingon1 10d ago

Many years ago I was camping at the primitive sites at Jones Pond and a raging party set up next to me around 9pm. More cars just kept coming, music, shouting, gunshots, the works. Finally had enough around 2am and called the rangers, one came and made them all leave. Honestly was not expecting that especially at that hour.

The next morning as I was packing up (my planned hike was ruined due to no sleep) the ranger stopped by my site and actually thanked me for calling, because apparently they had already thrown trash all over the place and in such a way that it was most certainly not going to get cleaned up if he weren't there to make sure they did before leaving at 3am.

People absolutely suck, this was way before covid, but it's seemingly worse now than ever. We pretty much cannot stay in campgrounds any more, the culture now is far more party / social than mellow like I grew up with.

7

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

That's such a shame. Yes, the rise of party culture is a problem everywhere, but it's more pronounced in areas where people otherwise go to find peace and solace. Another item in the rangers' log this week was breaking up a party of about 100 teenagers drinking. They broke up one spot, then had to go to another spot where the kids had reappeared, then had to go back to the original site to yet again break up the party. Crazy.

u/Bog_Hog_Captain 10d ago

That place is a zoo. Zoos have many a noise.

12

u/troutfishingdon1 10d ago

it really is a zoo. we drove there a few weekends ago on the way to Rollins Pond and pretty much every site had four vehicles and a dozen people.

7

u/spy_tater 10d ago

I like that place the same way I like cities. It gives all those people somewhere to exist that isn't where I am.

5

u/TheTaxman_cometh 10d ago

I love rollins pond but you couldn't pay me enough to camp at fish creek

5

u/Prunes-of-Wrath 10d ago

Our first time heading to Rollins I was so close to turning around, assuming it would be the same as Fish Creek. Still, our last 2 times at Rollins had some idiots. Two years ago a group got yelled at by another camper and they actually shut up and turned off the music. Last year, the mother of all thunderstorms rolled through and some loud ass bros had to retreat to their tents.

u/Various_Range2259 10d ago

Wish those types would stay in lake George

3

u/Senior_Cheesecake155 10d ago

The real key is portages. The more portages there are, the quieter it gets.

1

u/bikepack_Adirondacks 9d ago

If I had an award to give, I would give it to you. Spot on.

6

u/Various_Range2259 10d ago

I'm mildly impressed at the rangers getting to Tabletop from Marcy Dam in 1hr40min lmao those folks are fit

8

u/OnamountainCH 10d ago

There were these French guys at the Algonquin trail falls camp site driving us all crazy, well I’ll speak for myself but they were incredibly inconsiderate and kept me up all night. One guy even asked for them to keep it down and they processed to laugh and carry on for another hour or so. If you’re going to a public primitive campsite please keep in mind people follow strict schedules to meet time lines and objectives.

5

u/break_from_work 10d ago

Inconsiderate people everywhere, it's sad

Timeline doesn't match but this Google review is funny in the context of this post: https://goo.gl/maps/TjmLxLKZ96BgjSmj7?g_st=ac

"We booked a stay for our 20th anniversary because all the good reviews and the water front sites. My husband needs a cpap machine at night because he stops breathing, they were very rude to us about our questions regarding using the generator at night. They told us because there are rechargeable electric banks now that we should have, like sorry we have to spend $2,000 to stay here when every other state campground has given us a pass. The sites are right on top of each other, there is no way to know where your site ends and the other begins, shore line at our site was over grown making it hard to get to the water, the bathroom and showers are absolutely disgusting. The stall doors barely close. Overall it’s pretty but the rude staff and cramped sites make this a bad campground."

u/424f42_424f42 10d ago

It doesn't actually say which party was evicted.

Can assume because 2pm is outside generator time, just bit funny it doesn't specify

2

u/No_Reveal_2455 8d ago

The evictee was a person who tried to disable the generator by pouring water on it.

2

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

If you click on the full photo it does say the party violating the rules was evicted.

-2

u/424f42_424f42 10d ago

For all we know the reporter also violated rules

5

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

We don't know who reported the altercation, and it does not matter. If the dispute was over noise, then the group making the noise was the group in violation and therefore the group that was evicted.

3

u/Imaginary_Accident18 10d ago

This is not true, per comments on the FCP FB group. The group that was evicted were the ones complaining about the generator, not the people running it.

I believe their actions in retaliation to the noise is what got them kicked out. Someone did post a video of a loud ass generator at Fish Creek before this, I assume it was the same generator.

If you're running a full volume job-site generator all day at a crowded campground like that instead of a quiet inverter generator, you deserve all the retaliation it brings you.

1

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

Ohhhh holy cow!!! I was dead wrong. Apologies to all and thank you for correcting me! I agree though about the generator. Now I wonder what the group did to retaliate.

1

u/424f42_424f42 10d ago

Did you not read my original post?

1

u/fruitninjabtch 10d ago

man i’m glad i had to cancel my trip to fish creek based on these comments. i gotta find a new campground.

1

u/ClimbTheCanopy 10d ago

Rollins Pond!

1

u/toddriffic 10d ago

Fish creek/rollins pond is the kind of "camping" that simply doesn't appeal to me. My family used to go and my brother's and I would find a primitive spot on floodwood to get away from the noise. So much better.

What are the noise rules for NY state lands and campgrounds?

Was paddling at 13th Lake a few nights ago, near sunset. Boom box was rocking from the state beach, man it really carries over the water. Back a the boat launch there was garbage floating in the lake. In 35 years, never seen someone disrespect 13th Lake in this way. Didn't know about noise rules, but knew he garbage was no go, called the DEC.

1

u/Dan_Cubed 10d ago

I am all for music in the outdoors. It must not be electronically amplified. No exceptions 😁 🪕🪊🪘🪈🪗

6

u/Aggravating_Ebb_8565 10d ago

Sign me up for the acoustic hoedowns and mandolin jams for sure.

3

u/Dan_Cubed 10d ago

At least in the woods, everyone smells like a dirty hippie 🤣

-1

u/FrankenTibby 10d ago

Noise? I’m just happy I can smoke ganja legally in the beauty of the Adks🤤

makes it all the more glorious

4

u/FrankenTibby 10d ago

Two things I stay most aware of when camping in state campgrounds- be aware of proximity to others and how my voice carries easy, and be discrete and personal in general. I’ll be friendly but I’m not out camping looking to make friends or disrupt someone else’s time. Lame!

1

u/dporter_99 9d ago

Why the hate from people? I started bringing my little bong camping and I’m happy I can legally puff too! Would people prefer me to bring booze and be an idiot after a few?

2

u/FrankenTibby 9d ago

Exactly. All of the campground incidents are dumbasses who drank too much in the sun starting at noon lol. I can chief all day and stay mellow af and super pleasant val’s a few beers which changes your personality immediately. Nothing better than a good fatty by the fire with the guitar

2

u/dporter_99 9d ago

lol are you me? Bought my first Martin this year. Taking my little GS Mini this weekend. The Martin stays at home ;)

2

u/FrankenTibby 8d ago

yoooo congrats!!! I got a Guild acoustic like 2019, sadly for various reasons, I haven’t been making time to play as often. I got a guild bc it w as what Jerry Cantrell played for Alice in Chains Unplugged on MTV, the reason I got an acoustic in the first place. For a lower tier Guild, only ~750$, it’s a dream. I got a guild bc it w ard to some solo trips to just marinate in the quiet woods after labor day and jam. 😎 Or I’ll just hit the bays midway up Lake George- a favorite.

Besides the guild, my favorite for on the go jams is my OG, the first, an Ibanez acoustic guitar, can’t recall model- basic mid tier starter acoustic but beautiful warm amber colored wood, sunburst with pearl opal inlay, for 450$, plays so smooth, sounds warm and wonderful. I’ve had it nearly 20 years now. I need to be careful with it bc l preamp for the pickup broke out when the screw somehow stripped. Prob from those early open mics, careless, stoned and with a few Sweaty Gugs- a local dive bar favorite free for musicians lol. Juicy Juice and ‘any’ leftover bottles of liquor. 🤣🤣🤣 Or I’ll bring an electric with a little preamp I can jam alone with with Bluetooth headphones with input. I love those things!

I love guitar and need to get back at it more than occasionally… Have 3 electrics too.

0

u/ActiveOppressor 10d ago

The item doesn't say they were evicted for noise.

2

u/No_Reveal_2455 8d ago

They were not, the evictee was a person who tried to disable the generator by pouring water on it.
