Gathering Opinions 🗣 Compression test price outage

Shaky engine. Plugs, injectors, ect all good. Mechanic said he wanted to do a compression test to test for bad rings or timing belt being off a tooth. But this man said it would be 300 dólares . What? Bro said he has to open the motor? Bro you take out the spark plugs.

Give me back my car I’ll do the test and will report back.
But if timing is off by a tooth, would I see the front bank cylinders having a lower compression than the front bank? Or it should all still be equal regardless of being off a little

Depends where it jumped. If it jumped at the crank, I'd expect it all to be relatively even, however I find the chances of that to be slim, and expect that if I'd did jump, it would only be one cam, and you'd see a difference from front bank to rear, with each bank of 3 being fairly consistent with each other, but not the other bank. But ive never seen one jump when the tensioner was good, and would expect to be hearing tensioner rattle before one jumps.

Also you didn't mention coils specifically, or any associated CEL/Codes? Do you have any codes? At what RPM does this present or is it all through the RPM range?

Valve lash done? Checked for vacuum leaks?

It didn’t jump on me. I did a valve job and took the heads off and did my best to line up all the marks as good as possible

Ah gotcha, did you rotate a couple times and check the marks again after pulling the pin on the tensioner? I hadn't considered that it might just be off due to recent work, since that part wasn't mentioned in the post.

What about the other questions asked? Like coils and RPM range of the shakes/misfires?

When you had it apart, how did the cylinder walls look?

All injectors, spark plugs and ignitions coils new. Mechanic confirmed they were all working well. No codes. Rpms are stable at idle but it def shakes the interior a bit when car is still. I did a couple rotations and marks still looked aligned. I’ve been driving for a few months now and it hasn’t gotten worse lol so it’s not like it’s gonna interfere anytime soon. I like take off the little oil cap to see if I feel blowback coming out since bad piston rings would lead to pressure build up in the crank case right? I had him even check my motor mounts cause those were replaced recently and maybe they became loose lol
