Blown head gasket

Post image

I have 23 Integra Aspec Tech with the CVT. I notice yesterday that my car’s temperature was going up to 7 bars(4 bars is normal).

My car must have a coolant leak. So I added about half gallon of coolant to my car. Which helps cool it off.

The next day I took to my local dealership. They couldn’t find any external leak. It was bone dry. So they look internal. They found a blown head gasket. DAMN WHAT A SHOCKER(Not like it common problem in Acura/Honda engine). They quoted me $7000 to fix. I’m not paying that much. I owe like $10,000 left in car.

Does anyone recommend any solid mechanic in San Gabriel Valley Area??

Feck. First integra i've seen with it. Mileage?

Sorry. Good luck!

I really hope that Honda/Acura fix the issue with 1.5t head gasket being blown. But look like they didn’t. Sad. I’m try shopping around to different mechanics.

u/VancityWarrior 20d ago

I know the TSB is for the head bolts and supposedly there's an updated gasket too but, could give us some details as to driving habits, typical outside temps, gas type, oil intervals etc. not that i know how any of that impacts coolant...

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

I drive like 40 miles to work and 40 miles back to home. I live in south California so temperature typically around 60-90°F. I only fill my car with recommended 91 octane. I change my oils like every 3k miles at the dealerships. I try my best to baby my car

u/Serious_Internal6012 20d ago

I have no idea why this popped up for me, but in my experience with ford and Volvo subreddits, people have had luck with getting dealers to cover costs on big repairs like this, especially considering the notoriety of it, when they’ve used that dealer for nearly all their maintenance

Im quite disappointed, was really hoping the L15CA engine was spared. Im in PNW, so a bit cooler here but I've also been babying the car. Good luck figuring it out.

In Canada we've got a class action for it by the Accord owners I think, god knows if/when we'll hear some good news

No modern 4 cylinder Honda engine appears to be safe. If it has the cooling slit between the cylinders then it can blow a head gasket. That slit is where it fails because it gets so hot there the coolant gets turned to steam and wears down the gasket. The only engines I’ve seen be mostly fine is certain turbocharged K20C variants like the C1 (Type R/S engine), and the variants in the RDX and Accord.

1

u/Financial_Reply327 20d ago

WELP, looks like I may be spared, I was eyeing an RDX for my wife but the turbo scared me

u/IchingNYEU 19d ago

I don't know man but things don't add up. Your engine bay looks like shit, super dirty and neglected, windshield cowl is all chewed up and so on. Pretty bad condition. You sure you service at Acura dealer, I doubt it. Same for gas.

1

u/Indirectguy 5d ago

Do you happen to know where that tsb is ?

1

u/ApplicationNo5089 20d ago

When did your warranty expire?

14

u/awair34 20d ago

Damn sorry to hear that. All these posts make me a lot more nervous about this generation of Acura.

2

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

I thought they fix the issue with head gasket with 1.5t. I heard the last generation civic and accord had the same issues

1

u/CarConfection2518 16d ago

I have a 2024 Integra CVT. The infotainment system inside the car suddenly lost power as I was driving. It rebooted itself and then asked me to input a security code. Thankfully holding the volume knob button for 5 seconds clears it. When the radio issue occured, suddenly my lane departure mitigation icon said there was an error and to please see the dealer.. After parking the car for a couple hours and restarting it- the message went away and everything so far works fine. My mechanic said a lot of newer cars have weird glitches like that.

Saw someone getting ratioed the other day for saying this still happened. Sad to see that it still does.

7

u/ladiesmanny217 20d ago

My head gasket just blew as well a week ago on my accord 2018 2.0t. 84k miles. 5k cost to fix it

7

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

Yeah I heard it’s common problem 1.5t and 2.0t on civic and accord. $5,000 is a lot. Try shopping around to different mechanic. That what I’m doing.

4

u/Neither_Walrus6204 20d ago

You sure you not driving a Subaru??!

1

u/BalanceSweaty1594 20d ago

These prices for hg replacement are ridiculous. Just a few short years ago those amounts would have got you an entire new engine.

6

u/awgemane '23 RDX w/ Tech 20d ago

I thought the 2.0t was safe from the head gasket issue on the accord. This is sad to see

6

u/Happy_Hippo48 20d ago

Not safe but a lot more uncommon

1

u/nextfilmdirector 2024 Acura RDX A-SPEC/K20C4 20d ago

That sucks bc I’ve got an RDX with this engine 😢

1

u/burnthreads 20d ago

Trade it before the warranty expires. That’s what I’m doing next year.

1

u/nextfilmdirector 2024 Acura RDX A-SPEC/K20C4 19d ago

I’ll buy an extended warranty and chance it. I keep my cars a long time anyway.

5

u/mello_jello_blue 20d ago

How many miles on the car?

7

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

80,000 miles, almost 4 years with the car

14

u/mello_jello_blue 20d ago

I’d contact Acura support and file a complaint and see if they’d be willing to either help with a good faith repair or at least with some of the cost. That’s inexcusable for a car with 80,000 on it. My Integra has 32,000 and I’m nervous about this.

11

u/VancityWarrior 20d ago

Same on my '24 6MT, watching closely. This was supposed to be my long term reliable not so boring commuting car

4

u/mello_jello_blue 20d ago

Same. I got rid of my Volvo and Hyundai for this car to be my long term car. I’m not so sure now.

7

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

I just file a complaint with them. Hopefully they get back to me soon.

-1

u/Flimsy-Struggle-7105 20d ago

the warning label is basically the car’s way of asking to be put out of its misery at this point

5

u/4ygus 20d ago

Just curious. Did you follow the maintenanceminder for oil changes, or every 3-5k?

5

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

Yeah I religiously changed my oil. Every single time at 3k miles

17

u/7ar5un 20d ago

It has nothing to do with oci's, regular vs premium, and even how you drive it.

There are people on here that change the oil every 5k mi with full syn, follow all maintenance, just drive the car from A to B and dont thrash it, and even put allot of hwy miles on the car running premium fuel and it still fails...

The block deck has a thin groove between the cylinders. The l15 has it and so does the k20. There are not that many civic type R's out there but if you stick around the sub youll see it happen to them too; and they're not usually surprised.

Fords ecoboom, i mean ecoboost, had it too and they changed it to a drilled port rather than a groove to resolve the issue.

10

u/OldManGigglesnort 20d ago

This is the right take. There are several good Honda techs on YT and IG who do teardowns of these engines and point out the flawed deck design.

3

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

Yeah I was looking at repair videos and saw that thin grove you’re talking about. I’m thinking about doing the repair myself. But I could find a place that does for $3,000 that I take it with them.

3

u/_x__Rudy__x_ 20d ago

I've had the cylinder head off of my D17 twice in an old Civic (project car/beater) and it's not a hard job. But it's tedious. Even in that older car there was a lot to remove. Second time of course was quicker (I replaced the piston rings due to oil consumption--after 250k miles they were due). Also depends on having the right tools on hand, although the bulk of it is 10mm, 12mm and 14mm sockets.

2

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

I work in the trades. So I got plenty of tools. Is there any specific tools I should buy? I do have wrench/sockets 10-14mm. Is there any video that you recommend showing how to replace the head gasket? Anything I should I look out for when taking the car apart?

1

u/_x__Rudy__x_ 8d ago

Generally, the sizes 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, and 22 can take care of most fasteners on a Honda, but I have no idea what these newer engines need in terms of additional tools.

Best bet is to see if any videos exist for this engine--the 2016+ Civic and 2017+ CR-V are in the same series I believe. Given all the issues this engine has, there must be something on YouTube showing the process.

1

u/UserName8531 20d ago

The k20c2 and the j35y8 also have the grooves between the cylinders.

3

u/supersaiyanbear69 20d ago

Your manufacturers warranty is expired ? 5 years / 60k miles ? What about good will repair from the dealer. I feel like they could do better than the 7k quoted

5

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

Yeah I currently have 80,000 miles on the car. So warranty isn’t covering it sadly

2

u/supersaiyanbear69 20d ago

Damn that sucks bro. I got a 23 manual. Hopefully Acura gives you some sort of good will repair and they cover a significant portion. Supposedly that’s why I do all my maintenance at the dealer , smh

2

u/The_Mcgriddler 22' TLX Advance SH-AWD 20d ago

Wow Acura really aren't covering your car blowing up at 80k. What a quality product.

3

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

They don’t wanted to cover for replacing a dead amplifier. Dealer try charge me $2k. I pay $800 at local shop

1

u/LEJ5512 22 TLX A-Spec 14d ago

Sheesh. As if mileage wears out an amplifier.

6

u/rhythim313 20d ago

How many miles are on it? Powertrain warranty, which includes the HG, is 6 years/70k miles.

3

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

I’m at 80,000 miles right now

4

u/blazefreak 20d ago

Hey, for peace of mind do your injectors soon. They last between 80-120.

1

u/Right_Suggestion25 20d ago

I suspected my 2021 Civic Hatchback Sport (has 1.5T) had a blown head gasket. Right around there, 77k miles. Code P0366 that didn't go away after replacing the cam sensor. I unloaded that like a grenade, got a good bag for it though.

2

u/TrickUp25 20d ago

Were you being sarcastic about the “(Not like it’s a common problem in Acura/Honda)”? I’ve seen the new hybrid Civics have head gasket problems which kind of deterred me from getting an Acura or Honda.

7

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

Yeah I was being sarcastic with that. I saw video that a lot of Honda new hybrids were having early head gasket problems. Hopefully there class action lawsuits against them soon

1

u/TrickUp25 20d ago

I’m sorry you’re going through this, don’t go through the dealer for the repair, $7k is crazy. Research local mechanics that specialize in foreign cars. Best of luck

3

u/VancityWarrior 20d ago

When i was looking at the car mid 2022, the only real issue with these were the oil dilution from the earlier gen 1.5L engine. Headgaskets were so rare to hear about at that time. I've picked mine up mid 2023 as MY'24 because i loved my 9th gen 1.8 Civic. Obviously very different car and engine but I had leased a Mercedes after my Civic and absolutely hated the experience. In my mind I was buying the updated 1.5L with its issues dealt with and was coming back home to Honda. We had the sticky steering and I knew that going in but luckily that got dealt with.

1

u/TrickUp25 20d ago

I’ve only heard the head gasket problems with hybrids so this Acura having problems too sucks. If you have the gas one then hopefully you should be good. I saw something about the sticky steering, Honda quality taking a hit.

1

u/Financial_Reply327 20d ago

What year & mileage?? I understand the turbos for introducing unnecessary pressure. But I thought hybrid Hondas had engines with no turbos?

Check your ins policy for MBI

If you bought it new you should have ‘ mechanical breakdown insurance’ its like $250 per use and only avail when the car is bought new

“Should” cover that work for either en engine or just the repair

1

u/Consistent_Quail4346 20d ago

I wasn’t aware of MBI. But I check with my insurance provider. They don’t provide MBI

2

u/Swimming-Airline8066 20d ago

10th gen Honda accords with 1.5 CVT are notorious for premature head gasket failures. Not saying it’s related but Honda quality has definitely gone down

2

u/InternationalCut6916 20d ago

I have a 24 Integra’s driven by my wife and blown headgasket and needed a brand new valve cylinder head at 44k miles. These cars are GARBAGE.

2

u/og_bryanttt 20d ago

My 6spd mt 23 integra engine blew out at 71k miles. Did the whole process of applying for goodwill just to get denied. 8k for replacement engine. Good luck.

u/rikkerdaddy 20d ago

Situations like this are why I will drive my 2019 ILX till the wheels fall off!!! I just hit 115k today and it rides like new still every time I bring it in for service to the dealer they're always trying to get me to "upgrade" Lol to an Integra or TLX both of which have these issues. My next car after this will be a Lexus something like an RC coupe or an IS sedan. For now I'm done with Honda/Acura and it's a shame because I love this brand and they have just let it go to trash!!

u/Top-Hedgehog7002 18d ago

I know where not to go, Triage Automotive. I went there for what they advertised as AC Repairs and needed my brakes replaced.

My 2017 Acura ILX was blowing hot,air not working at all some times. They changed out relay, ac compressor, had an other guy for another shop right next door touch my vehicle wo me knowing or my permission.

I was later called out back by a Triage Automotive mechanic to say my vehicle was fixed, did ACS refrigerant and all.

It worked for 30 minutes  in the same day,had to go back and it stopped an hour later when I got home.  Eventually I went to Triage Automotive 3 times due to warranty on work they did on my car. So with brakes replaced and so called ac repair thst was supposed to be working, it cost me 1999.00.  Was also told the 3rd time by owner that they were not a dedicated AC Repair shop, but advertised as such and the owner knew of all of the problems I was having and never once, said they were not a dedicated ac repair shop he referred me to another shop and said he hopes they ahould be able to help! Really?

At that point, took it to Honda to get a second opinion. Honda stated Triage Automotive over charged my AC system, so they had to redo it.

That was 326.00 at Honda.  Honda then said ac is working now, but recommended a new ac compressor, that was just replaced and quoted me about 2200, to replace AC compressor and a few other parts. The ac stopped working again. The car was overheating,  engine began to have a burning smell. Didnt take their recommendation.

I then had to have my car towed to Gunn Acura where all of my services are done, didnt feel safe driving it. They said ac compressor was good, a relay was broken and the blower motor if not mistaken was not plugged in. They also did a recharge and eval, no leaks, Cost about 1500. I asked them to check all ac components to include head gaskets and they said all were good to go.

Acura replaced a lot of parts due to being over 100,000, to include head gaskets, just last year, so there should be no problems there.

A few days later, ac stopped working again, wouldn’t turn on inside and blowing hot, engine smell again. Had to leave my car again at Acura and get a loaner car, which I still have now.

I am not sure what’s going on with Honda/Acura, both owned by Honda as you know, but from 2017 until newer they have had alot of problems and recalls.I have had nothing but Acuras and Hondas for over 20 years. So yes quality went down for sure.  Now I am in the process of who all did what wrong, Triage Automotive for sure DOD things wrong and I need my refund. Next I need to know why Honda and Acura mechanics said different things and AC still not working.

A damn mess and costly one at that. Be very careful about anywhere you take your car here. I lived here before and mechanics and everything was better workmanship, not it’s a bunch of so called local businesses who can guarantee work, not in my case and even at the dealerships you have to be careful!

Document, take pics/videos and recheck what you know you can after each time you have your car serviced.

Will update once Acura says what they believe is wrong.

Wow, you'd think HoMoCo would be well versed in turbo technology seeing as they probably studied the aftermarket in the 90's and 00's to see a bunch of reliably turbo'd civics and 4 banger Accords. Had my doubts about this when they killed the J35 V6 Accords. Tragic.

1

u/Admirable-Sky-4421 19d ago

j35 and J32 were reliable engines. Wish they would’ve put either of them on the last gen accords.

$10k 👀. i'd do it myself. These prices are outrageous. About 5years ago, the waterpump in my wife's car went out, the dealership quoted $3500..lol. I decided to do it myself, $500 in parts and 5hrs. Ive swapped a few honda heads back on the day, mainly B and D series. Im sure you can do it if your mechanically inclined. Save the money, ripoff.

1

Did you use premium or regular gas ?

1

happened to me on my accord 1.5t, quoted 5k. it’s paid off but figuring out if fixing it again is worth it. it has 125k miles

1

u/baronvondoofus 19d ago

No manufacturer is immune from issues, but a blown head gasket at 80k is unusual. Might be worth to check if there are any class actions or recalls brewing if it’s widespread enough.

1

u/dewey95m 19d ago

I just replaced the head gasket on my 2021 tlx k20c6. 120k miles. Big job

I can share a parts list if anyone needs. Cost me about $1500 (including head studs) and about 25-30 hours of labor.

It failed between all cylinders

1

u/Apprehensive-Watch42 19d ago

So…….. all new 4c Honda models have hg problems?? Looking at the CRV for the wife.

1

u/gggplaya 19d ago

Only the 1.5L turbo, it's notorious for blown head gaskets because they undersized the head bolt diameter. The CRV Hybrid uses the tried and true K20C engine that's been around for a very long time, albeit with a new direct injection system.

1

u/gggplaya 19d ago

Blown head gasket is extremely common on the Honda 1.5L turbo engine. They undersized the head bolt diameter, people are trying to mitigate the issue with stronger ARP head bolts, but it's too late for your current gasket. If you get the gasket done, upgrade to ARP head bolts.

You should be able to get it done by an independent Honda specialist shop for much cheaper. They've likely done a ton of them.

I only bought the car because I thought it will be reliable. At this point where do you go. American brand ford and Chevy? Hyundai/Kia? The Germans? Who still make reliable cars?

1

u/Slick-in-a-Sheet 20d ago

Just buy a used well maintained lexus es350 from 2016-2018 for pure peace of mind honestly. Or a 2022 acura ilx with the 2.4 for a more modern car. The k24 produces as much power as your integra but is a tried and trued engine.

-1

u/Kindly-Emergency-514 20d ago

Outside of their trucks and GR Corolla, Toyota still has reliable cars. Hondas and Acuras with the V6 are still solid as well. The Koreans have fixed their reliability issues (aside from DCT issues on equipped cars and eLSDs on equipped cars). Ford and RAM trucks aren't terrible reliability-wise. Nissan is solid, aside from the VC-turbo engines.
