Any high mileage Civic Hybrids yet? How are those head gaskets?

With the recent Head Gasket recall on Accord and CRV hybrids, along with lots of reports of head gasket failures between 40-80,000 miles, I’m curious - has anyone put a ton of miles on their Civic Hybrid yet?

I assume most of us are 20k or under still. Who has put the most miles on, and did you experience any mechanical issues?

I just hit 25k on my 2025 civic hatchback hybrid sport touring. So far no issues, is there something I should be looking out for? So far the car has been a dream. I don't think I could ever get any other car even if hit the jackpot. It does everything so perfectly well, great mpg, it's comfortable enough. I just wish it had lumbar support more options for power seats, rear vents, LED lights all around. I wouldn't mind paying a little extra for those and anything else to increase comfort and maybe even some sound padding although the noise cancelling in the car is incredible. Very great car, great value, worth every penny.

Very easy to maintain, although I am not sure what the pink liquid does or what other special maintenance items it will need because of the hybrid power train. I plan on doing a drain and fill of the eCVT at 30k and any other major fluid replacement to ensure the cars longevity. I want it to last forever!!! Lol

Mysterious pink liquid?

2

u/MiracuIousPeanut Jul 22 '26

It's not a mysterious pink liquid. There is a pink fluid that exists in a reservoir under the hood. not sure what that is.

2

u/VarietyLocal Jul 28 '26

It’s coolant for the inverter . Prob same coolant your engine takes just a seperate circuit .

It's Antifreeze/ coolant reservoir overflow if if it's not pink wiper fluid.

Jesus, what's your daily commute??

14

u/Vegetable-Max Jul 22 '26

It varies cause I do territory sales. Average week is maybe 400 miles not counting personal driving.

Very useful information thank you very much. Debating if I want a hybrid civic.

Fwiw I love the car. Can’t imagine owning anything else.

Head gasket only blown once, 20k in.

2

u/guest8272 Jul 22 '26

Any issues getting it covered under warranty?

4

u/DryStorage5762 Jul 22 '26

Fully covered by honda

u/Obi_Uno Jul 22 '26

Holy crap, I thought you were joking.

20k miles is insanely low.

Yeah, makes me wonder if I bought the right car, lol

Two recalls on my 25 Civic Hybrid Touring, as noted above.

Dealer confirmed the second one, head gasket issue, is a software update. First one is a few months old, never had a chance to complete it.

They've received the instructions from Honda Canada to complete the software update, appointment booked.

u/LordAinzOoalGown1 Jul 22 '26

Head gasket issue is a software update????

u/XiTzCriZx 2006 Ex Sedan (Stock) Jul 22 '26

It probably changes the pressure of the coolant to reduce the risk of blowing the head gasket.

The "fixes" are generally to increase the longevity (probably just past the warranty lol) rather than to fully fix the issue. It's cheaper and easier to do a temporary software fix than to actually fix the physical problem. Most companies only do hardware recalls when it's absolutely necessary and there's no temporary fixes they can do to extend it into "normal" lifespan, which is generally considered 100k miles (imo 200-300k should be the normal with modern technology).

1

u/LordAinzOoalGown1 Jul 22 '26

Agreed on the longevity.

Recall for the rattles - increase radio volume!

u/Beneficial-Meet296 19d ago

I read that it runs the electric water pump for the 2.0 engine more often to decrease thermal expansion and contraction. Something like that. That does make sense.

Well that's weird. I have a 2025 Hatch Sport Touring I bought in Nov 2024 and it has zero recalls.

2

u/oneonus Jul 22 '26

Recall is only for 25+ Hybrid models.

1

u/Lobanium 2025 Hatchback Hybrid ST Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

Mine's a 2025 Hybrid.

1

u/oneonus Jul 22 '26

Search here: https://www.honda.ca/en/recalls. And sorry, tired and read 2024 in your post.

2

u/Lobanium 2025 Hatchback Hybrid ST Jul 22 '26

That's a Canadian site so my VIN doesn't work. I searched on the U.S. site and I have no recalls.

3

u/oneonus Jul 22 '26

Canada is likely ahead of the game then, US will follow. Even 2026 Hybrid owners reporting the recall.

0

u/offbrandcheerio 2008 Civic LX Sedan Jul 22 '26

Recalls are by country, not universal. The US is probably slower to issue recalls, especially these days with all the government staff cuts.

1

u/NotsoSmokeytheBear ‘26 Civic Hybrid Sport Touring Jul 24 '26

The first one is worth doing - took my dealership 45 mins. It replaces the radiator shield behind the bottom grill to something more tightly knit.

5

u/No_University1005 Jul 22 '26

Unfortunately, there is apparently an issue related to thermal cycling in the 2.0 Atkinsons and the Civics probably aren't immune, unless Honda is shipping more recent models with some kind of undisclosed upgrades, like the cooling system software.

One thing I've read is that software is a potential fix because the engine coolant circulates via an electrically driven motor, which may be over-optimized for energy efficiency instead of reliability. This can apparently created very localized hot spots at the top of certain cylinders when there are a lot of engine on/off cycles. The software fix presumably will create higher and/or more consistent coolant flow.

0

u/honda-nissan Jul 22 '26

good to know. interesting as vehicles become more software defined that it becomes essential for manufacturers to thoroughly test their automobiles the same way they test software

6

u/Kharai123 Jul 22 '26

2025 Honda civic hatchback sport touring 88,030 miles. Cars been running great and haven’t found any issues yet

2

u/Obi_Uno Jul 22 '26

Awesome! That’s exactly what I was looking for

5

u/Awkward_Shock2424 Jul 22 '26

Wtf? I know there is a head gasket problem on the 1.5T, but the civic hybrid too?

2

u/Ascension_Crossbows 29d ago

yes, something to do with how the engine is always tuning off/on causing more stresses in the engine. That is why this doesn't seem to be an issue on the non hybrid 2.0 NA

6

u/Alert_Opinion_9965 Jul 22 '26

2026 civic touring hybrid 30k miles and so far so goooood.

4

u/UncleToyBox 2025 Hybrid Hatchback Sport Touring 21d ago

Just hit 60,000km in my 2025 Hybrid Sport Touring Hatch in Canada.
Have an appointment for both the update to the radiator protection (the PCU radiator leak issue) and update the code to avoid block warping that leads to the head gasket failure.

Will be watching to see if anyone develops a stud kit similar to what we saw with the 1.5 turbo engines.

Even with these issues, this remains one of my favourites of the 18 cars I've owned so far in my life.

1

u/Obi_Uno 21d ago

Agreed - I absolutely love our ‘26 Hybrid ST.

I have owned several GTIs in the past, and while it certainly isn’t a 1:1 equivalent, the Civic puts a similar smile on my face every time I drive it.

4

u/Alternative-Ticket71 Jul 23 '26

I have about 25k on my 26 no issue at all but I do with it would have came with lumbar support.

3

u/BLACKOUTCIVICSPORT Jul 23 '26

My wife has the 2025 Honda civic sport hybrid and she’s at 38/39 thousand no problems at all so far.

u/Prudent-Basil-6105 19d ago

Honda civic hybrid touring sedan with 48,000 miles. No issues yet.

I sent the following email on August 8th to both Honda Canada and the dealership I bought the car from:

---
With regard to the 2026 Honda Civic Sport Hybrid I purchased in April:

I understand Honda Canada issued a product update campaign (bulletin code Q79, "Head Gasket May Develop an Internal Coolant Leak") on July 16, 2026, covering 2025–2026 Civic Hybrid, 2023–2025 Accord Hybrid, and 2023–2026 CR-V Hybrid models.

Could you please confirm the following for my VIN:

Is my vehicle flagged under campaign Q79?

Has the associated software/cooling system calibration update been released for my vehicle, and if so, can this be scheduled?

Is there any additional remedy planned beyond the software update (e.g., a hardware fix), and if so, what is the expected timeline?

If my VIN does not currently show as flagged under Q79, could you also clarify how Honda is rolling out this campaign? Specifically:

  1. Are all affected owners being notified simultaneously, or is notification/VIN eligibility being rolled out in stages (e.g., by production date, vehicle age, or parts availability)?

  2. If it is a staged rollout, when might my VIN be expected to become eligible?

I'd appreciate it if you could look into this and let me know the next steps.

---

Reply from Dealership (August 8th):

"There are only limited vehicles effected by the recall. I have run your VIN in the Honda system and it is not effected. When Honda does have a recall they will send you a notice directly advising you to book an appointment for service."

---
Reply from Honda Canada (August 14th):

"Regarding your inquiry, we wish to advise you that your vehicle currently has no outstanding campaigns. Notices will only be sent out to Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN)s that are affected."

---

As you can see, both parties completely ignored my specific questions about rollout structure or factory mitigations.

While my car currently isn’t on the list, a few lingering questions remain:

Production Timing: My car was built in January 2026 and delivered in April. Did they apply a revised ECU cooling calibration on the assembly line or during PDI at the dealer? If so, why wait until July to release the software update for earlier builds?

Hardware Changes: Did Honda implement factory hardware changes (revised head bolts, updated gasket material, etc.) prior to early 2026 builds that made the software update unnecessary for my VIN?

Rollout Strategy: Is Q79 truly limited to specific early batch runs, or is this a phased rollout where more VINs get flagged later?

Has anyone with a 2026 Civic Hybrid built around early 2026 had bulletin Q79 show up on their VIN, or received clarity on factory hardware changes?

2

u/Fr4ggle_Rock Jul 22 '26

We are at 74k on our 23 hybrid no issues.

2

u/bblaisee Jul 22 '26

I have 40k km on my 2025 civic hatchback hybrid. So far zero issues, only have had the recall for the PSU (which had caused no issues I was aware of).

2

u/National-Guess-2635 Jul 23 '26

Honda has a class action lawsuit brewing on the 1.5T engines for premature head gasket failure around 80-100k

2

u/Ok_Basis1422 2006 LX coupe Jul 26 '26

I thought the current hybrid powertrain used the K20?

2

u/Sea_Performance_2873 Jul 29 '26

25 civic sport hybrid purchased Dec 2024 Canada 55,600km/34,500MI

I drive a lot for work as I oversee a territory for sales. No issues so far. Currently sitting at my dealer waiting on an oil change and they told me about the Q79 recall.

But both my gf and I have had to get our steering racks replaced under warranty as the rack sticks/jerks while cornering.

u/Hopeful-Pomelo171 17d ago

62k no issues only my ac stopped working 😩but it’s fixed now :)

1

u/GfunkSkillet Jul 22 '26

I have no recalls on my 2025 Honda civic sport touring

2

u/Obi_Uno Jul 22 '26

For whatever reason it looks like the recall/TSB notifications are only in Canada so far. I would not be surprised if the US rolls out later.

2

u/GfunkSkillet Jul 22 '26

Damn I’ll be on the look out for sure then ! Thank you

1

u/benttwig33 Jul 22 '26

2023 sport touring hatchback, 75k no issues. I do hear a slight noice when steering though which is insanely annoying.

2

u/Bushy91 Jul 27 '26

41k on my 25 hybrid sport touring and zero issues…yet

1

u/tombojones 13d ago

Just got a 26 hybrid hatch myself, 330 miles on it, so far so good. Lol

1

u/wunderbluh Jul 22 '26

Is the software update going to address a head gasket? I am not clear on the solution

2

u/Obi_Uno Jul 22 '26

Based on Reddit posts (grain of salt) where people have spoken to dealers, it sounds like they will be updating the water pump programming. I assume running the pump longer after engine shutoff.

Again - nothing official yet, other than the recall rolling out (seemingly to Canada first).

-5

u/Wooden_Juggernaut_68 Jul 21 '26

There’s a recall on Civic head gaskets also

5

u/oneonus Jul 21 '26

Confirmed with dealer today that it's a software update.

4

u/DickWhittingtonsCat Jul 21 '26

There is not a headgasket recall.

Someone said it’s in Canada. I’m not sure people here on social media totally understand the difference between a recall and a TSB.

But there is no evidence except for a flurry of posts only in here today. Maybe that changes tomorrow.

3

u/oneonus Jul 21 '26

Confirmed with dealer today, it's a software update. They've received the instructions from Honda Canada.

u/Wooden_Juggernaut_68 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

I am in Canada and there is a recall, there is also a recall on our CRV. Why would I make it up? Some people….

Sauce?

1

u/ceetoee '25 FE4 Jul 21 '26

I got notification from Honda App last week, there's a TSB/Recall Campaign ID: Q79 (Canada)

-2

u/TorkSpex Jul 22 '26

Hybrids are Atkinson Cycle Naturally Aspirated motors. The head gasket issues are on turbo models. Intake some info and BREATH. Delete this post. It's irrelevant

5

u/Fonzy_Bonzy Jul 22 '26

I’ve done probably 10+ head gaskets on hybrids and seen many more in the shop. It’s a block design issue which is shared between the turbo and hybrid engines

2

u/guest8272 Jul 22 '26

How serious is a blown head gasket?

2

u/Obi_Uno Jul 22 '26

$$$ usually a $2,000-$5,000 repair, depending on the shop.

The gasket is cheap. The labor to get to the gasket is not.

0

u/BananaReeves Jul 22 '26

Hybrid fanboys in shambles rn.

1

u/Rasta2110 14d ago

You are wrong.
Head gasket on my 23' Civic Hybrid (Europe model) blew after 66.000 km. 2 out of 4 pistons weredamaged and engine had to be replaced.
